knowing this is a very reputable  site (and a helpful gurus) i just want to ask.

iam having second thoughts because i am entering college next year (philippines) :)

It's a very pliable degree...not to mention it's often a bare minimum in many computer-oriented jobs, even if the recruiters have no idea what they actually need.  You can often get around that with certifications (which you may require anyway) or competency testing performed by the company, but there's plenty of times where a degree is a minimum.

If it's something you're genuinely interested in pursuing, yes, it's definitely worth it.

 

At least in the United States, you're not likely going to find many computer science related jobs without a degree.

So many give up in their freshman years. The CS class in my 2nd freshman semester was literally half of the first. Many were weeded out by the first programming class which was essentially a java coding boot camp for freshman. Class is smaller still in softmore.

Yes, definitely. Even if you don't end up going into a Computer Science career, a degree in Computer Science is rigorous and is far more respected than some other courses out there.

It is hard in the beginning because you have to path the math classes first. I started my CS degree at age 32 and I am not even the oldest.

I can be a good degree too have but it depends on what exactly you want to do. If something like networking is something you want to do you can get certifications like Network+, CCNA, and some others to get in the field. You don't NEED a degree to get into I.T. If you can get a cert like your A+ you can get your foot in the door at help desk jobs or computer repair and then continue your certs and move onto other fields like networking, security, programming, collaboration, ect. You being in the Philippines might be different because I can only give examples for the job market in America.

Yes a degree is a good way to get paid more, get a job faster, and do less grunt work.

not sure about phillipines but in the US demand is there for talented developers. but you can't expect a good job with just a degree even it's from a top school, you have to put in effort outside of classes. at least one internship when able. practice interview skills much as possible. you don't need to land a position at a big tech company to be successful. network like mad. make something! take some free courses online, there's tons available

I'm going to say something that falls in the negative side: I know quite a few computer science majors, and they all agree on the fact that, by the time you graduate, a lot of the material you've learned will be outdated already. But that doesn't mean it's a useless field; it's just that you should keep yourself updated and educated. Never stop learning, it's a field that evolves fast.

Depends on the country you are in. The thing about any tech degree is to make sure you stay up to date, it is always a continuous education even after you graduate. I know someone from the late 90's to early 2000's who was a programmer. He is having a tough time because the programming language he knows nobody barely uses anymore.

 

Keep up to date on the latest techniques, practices and certifications and you should be fine.

Internships are the important part.  You need to establish that in your junior and senior year which hopefully helps with the transition into permanent employment.

 

Also, a degree in CS doesn't translate 1:1 to a career.  You will need to decide what you actually want to do: developer, data scientist/data warehousing, infrastructure, hosting/vm/storage, AI and so on.  I work with a few Fortune 10 companies and the variety of IT jobs is quite large and you will never be an expert in all of it.

 

As far as needing a degree, it's pretty much necessary these days.  When I started, a lot of it was considered a dark art by executives.  They just wanted people that could figure things out and the disciplines like project management, security, standards and process was not emphasized.  We literally figured everything out on our own, sometimes with millions of dollars of equipment on the line.

 

I will also add that a lot of US companies are outsourcing development.  You will see companies like Infosys hiring people with degrees in your country to work on projects.

A degree is not always better than a cert. It does really depend on which part of the field you are going into. You can make a lot of money with only certs, more than a degree can get you. A lot of IT fields are looking for people with certs more than degrees

It depends. If you want to be a software engineer, then no. If you want to be a farmer, then also no. However, if you want to be involved in the design of computers, then no. Go with computer engineering.

 

In all honesty, computer science is a mega broad field and if you want to be successful, then go with a more specific degree. Usually, this is done with the "concentration" types in your degree, or a completely different degree.
