i7 8700k or i7 9700k?

HaBeeAir

I'm currently stuck between the two. It's only a 30 to 40 dollar difference. I know the extra cores on the 9700k is good especially if I want to stream but the biggest turn off for me is the high temperatures on it. It can run up to 20 degrees higher than the 8700k. I have a corsair h150i pro as a cooler in a lian li dynamic case. What's your thoughts? Also, wha th temperature is considered too high?

they are the same in most tasks, but with multi threaded loads the 8700k wins.

I'd go with i7 8700K as it has more 2x threads then te 9700k.
So there will be nice performance difference specially when rendering / editing n stuff

The 8700K has 6 cores & 12 threads and the 9700K has 8 cores & 8 threads. I'm not the best at math, but how is that twice as much? :P

The 8700K is the one with more cores/threads.

Only get the 9700K if it's the same price or cheaper or you only intend to do a lot of gaming or single threaded workloads (like adobe suite)

Today's cpu prices are just killing me.

Wanted to buy a 8700 over my old i5 2500, but someone was faster than me and there's none in stock right now.

Is ryzen 2700 an option? I've only had bad experience in dealing with amd products before.

(I mainly run some games, working as a programmer, some photo editing once in a while)

If you're buying last gen (8700/8700k) you need to buy on the used market, not new.

I would pick an 8700 over a 2700 any day, especially for gaming or programming.

AMD is back in the game in a big way. Yes the 2700 is a very viable option.  If we're lucky ryzen 3000 series chips will still use AM4 sockets and just need a bios update.

Unfortunately, neither I have the time or luck buying used tech. It's a bit 'easier' for me just to pay a little bit more, but to have no regrets and extra time spent later on.

Thanks anyways.

The 9700k is still the faster CPU despite not having hyperthreading, and it also doesn't run as hot. If you plan to OC past 5.0Ghz you will need a big 280mm AIO to keep the 8700k cool or you will need to delid. I would get the 9700k.

Ok then you basically have to pick between a 2700 and the 9700K if you want new, so choose either multitasking or gaming/single threaded stuff.

Your cooler is more than enough for a 9700K.

There's no need for the 2700 if you're streaming because you should be using GPU or iGPU encoding instead of CPU encoding.

Or if you want to save up more and get a 9900K you basically get the best of both, lots of threads and lots of single core performance.

Not quite 2x. 8700K is 6c/12t, i7 9700K is 8c/8t.

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-9700K-vs-Intel-Core-i7-8700K/4030vs3937

9700K seems to be slightly faster in both single and multi-core performance in Cinebench, faster in Passmark, and slightly faster in single and quad core performance in UserBenchmark.

Between the two, I'd go with whichever is cheapest. They're so similar in performance that it won't make much of a difference.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

The ones saying that the 8700K outperforms the 9700K are just wrong and clearly haven't seen any benchmarks and reviews.

In the majority of (not all) tasks, a 9700K will beat a 8700K, not by a lot mind you,  but around 5%. This is because the 9700K has an all core turbo of 4.6GHz compared to 4.3GHz on the 8700K.

Also, in most multithreaded apps, 8C/8T is slightly more powerful than 6C/12T.

All in all they are pretty evenly matched but if given the choice I would take the 9700K. You also get the bonus of hardware based Spectre and Meltdown fixes, not that it matters much for most deskop users.

I'm very new to PC building and I am actually looking for advice regarding my new 3D rendering rig I am planning to build. I have come across these two CPU's while researching and just assumed that since 9700k is the "descendant" of the 8700k it would be better? Also which one do you think is better for rendering and 3D modelling and whats more important cores or threads when it comes to rendering?

Thanks.
