Canada's first eSports stadium to be opened in Richmond BC!

MrrMoose

Esports is a up and coming industry in Canada, lots of professional and amateur teams are popping up all over the country. This week as sites like Engadget and Richmand News have reported,

<< Myesports Ventues has announced that it's opening The Gaming Stadium, billed as Canada's first eSports stadium, in Vancouver (specifically Richmond) sometime in 2019. >>

As the article suggests it's interesting that one is being opened in western Canada over eastern Canada despite there being a bigger interest in places like Toronto or Montreal.

The location is also not going to be the biggest Engadget is reporting that it will have <<room for 250 fans, 40 gaming stations and broadcasters>> Who knows if this will be a issue as gaming grows in popularity.

Engadget is reporting that this arena will be a community driven location with << competitions at "all skill levels" >>.

It's going to be interesting to see how this location affects the local gaming scene and the national one too!

In Ready Player One (The book!) sports are people competing in sim rigs with haptic suits to allow immersion and feeling of the sport. I don't think we could do football or rugby but I think Quidditch as an eSport would be awesome.

That's an F in the profile pic

I don’t get it. All you need is a movie theatre. And let people bring their own chairs, computers and tables. Techies will gladly set things up for you for free. Just give these people a place and time to play. Movie theatres should get on this bandwagon.

Free money for them and I totally agree, I would appreciate that were I live!

For traditional sports, a large stadium makes sense. For E-sports, why does it matter? Anyone can play from any part of the world, you don't need huge stadiums (and they are a huge waste of money as well)

Need LAN for no lag and to make sure no cheating. People registering for a tournament and not showing up is a problem as well in smaller online tournaments.

Why is it being called a "stadium" when no sports are actually being played there?

What does windows 10 and ET have in common?

They are both constantly trying to phone home.

How about call shit by what it actually is? This is nothing more then a glorified lan.

I'm still trying to understand the whole e-sport appeal.  I think i've tuned into a couple tournaments on twitch only to lose interest after 30 seconds of watching.  I'm sure i'd be bored sitting in the audience watching someone else play.

Now if they took that building and turned it into an awesome lan center and arcade, now that'd be sweet.

Honestly, I doubt they will have enough events and spectators on a consistent basis for a specialized venue to be viable. They might have better luck just renting out space at the Richmond Olympic Oval (same place LTX2018 was held) for such events. For world championships or something, there's Rogers Arena in downtown Vancouver.

Stadiums are for spectating pretty much. That's the modern definition.

Esports is supposed to be a spectator event. A stadium would facilitate that. Don't see why it would need a dedicated venue though. Plenty venues work just fine currently.

While technically it's a LAN environment, it wouldn't really compare with the average LAN considering that the majority of people present come to see a small number of people play and you'd have at most 10 computers on stage.

When did the definition of stadium change ?

Also the number of systems doesn't determine whether or not it's considered a lan...

Quite frankly I could care less what people enjoy. If you like watching others play video games it's no skin off my teeth. The part I have a problem with is even remotely using terminology such as "sports" and "stadium" to describe playing video games or an event based around such. It's a bunch of marketing bullshit.

Yeah the only gaming I can watch anymore is Achievement Hunter, and it sure as fuck isn't even remotely related to the gameplay.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Everybody turns to dust.

The blood is on your hands.

The blood is on your hands!

Pyo.

There’s a lot of strategy and risk involved. These things alone make it worthwhile to watch. If there’s one game worth watching it’s definitely Starcraft. You get to see huge armies with explosions and massacres. And it is so strategic. Unfortunately people don’t play that anymore. But I agree that watching League of Legends, Fortinite or Overwatch would be boring. Maybe Rocket League would be fun.

It’s just so hard to see the appeal of a game when you’re not invested. It would be comparable to watching Poker without knowing the rules.

I'm a gamer, have been since I was a teen going downtown to play pinball machines.

I have also led a physically active life.

Long distance cycling, rock climbing, etc.

Playing a computer game is not a sport, it is a game.

sport
spôrt/
noun
1.
an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

Egames

There, isn't that better?
