I own machines that are incapable of addressing 1/10th that capacity.  Like if you plugged it in, it would probably question the fabric of reality and become sentient.

Meh I prefer Zen processors

Yeah but 24 zen processors would cost, at a bare minimum if you count the recently unveiled Athlon 200GE,  $1,320, and if we want some thicc CPUs like this one, we could work with the 1900x which I've found a few for around $300, so let's be generous and put all 24 at $299, we'd be talking around $7,176 for 192 cores, which is exactly how many these Opterons have, albeit I'm pretty sure two 1900x would outperform 24 Opteron 6128s.
Now, I've also seen a few EPYC 7601's running around for $999, which means I could walk around with 768 cores for a mere $23,976
But what if we want to have 768 cores while still being able to sort of game and also completely obliterate Cinebench? Well whipping out $41,999.76($45,464.74 with tax) would net us 24 Threadripper 2990wx's.

By the way I spent $54.00 for these, free shipping. For not even the price of a single dual core, locked, Athlon 200GE I got a bunch of nearly useless processes I can rub my face against all day. Also as soon as I buy some old tape reel hard drives I'll get those puppies posted here to further contribute to this thread as I've become far too sidetracked.

Buy a bunch of old mobos for them and make some servers

I was thinking about that, even though they're absolutely horrible in terms of performance, I could have six 32 core servers that I could use to run numerous simplistic servers, as long as IPC isn't much of a requirement. But for the most part the cheapest dual cpu motherboard is around 130 and quad is about 250-300, plus the power draw would be horrible. It'd be cheaper to buy two used 7601's and have those on a single server as it'd probably outperform six quad opteron servers in nearly every category, and also has far more memory capability, as these are limited to like 32 gigs per cpu oof

So I have finally finished my retro (early to mid 2000's for me) gaming PC. I use the term finished loosely as i am still looking to swap in a better motherboard that will allow me to chance FSB and multiplier settings (current one is bios locked and i can't find a compatible bios to flash it with).

This started out as me buying a shitty Compaq on eBay for about $20 with the goal just to muck around with it and i ended up going deep down the Rabbit hole and spending a whole lot more money (and a huge amount of time) on different components and learning some basic early 2000's modding (Like sleeving my own IDE cables).

This turned into a pretty cool little project for me and it was great to build the computer i always dreamed of when i was a teenager :)

Specs are as follows:

* AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (thoroughbred Core)

* 1GB DDR 3200

* ATi Radeon 9600XT

* Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty Eddition (with Live Drive)

* 2x 160BGB 7200RPM HDD

* Wireless LAN

* DVDRW / 3.5" FDD

*Custom Sleeved IDE cables / Sleeved ATX Power extension

* Cooler Master Xdream III CPU Cooler

* Swanky Blue Lights

There doesn't seem to be any legitimate way to activate it anymore online or over the phone (tried both).

Managed to get a new factory sealed copy of XP with a genuine licence and was pretty sad to find i couldn't activate it.

i resorted to ... 'less genuine' means to make this copy genuine :)

yeah it makes sense with it being no longer supported but it will make preservation of systems from this era extremely hard without dodgy windows installs if Microsoft DRM will lock systems out after 30 days and they no longer offer any form of activation for the software.

Yeah, that was my main complaint about XP. I think it was like that for everything up to 7, iirc.

I may look into doing that just so I don't have to reinstall every month. After that, I just need a better PSU and I can throw in my ATI Radeon HD 4850 and I should be good to go.

I've got an Athlon 64 X2 3800+, 3GB DDR, a 120GB SATA drive, and usual motherboard/case/PSU that comes with an OEM system.

<3 I would love to build an Athlon 64 System again! havent used that CPU in sooooo long.

and it would make finding working software a whole lot easier. not having SSE2 on the Athlon XP is a major pain in the butt to work around!

Oh yeah, definitely.

I've got a dual Athlon MP system as well, one of those is basically an Athlon XP with multi CPU support.

One of the things I like about the Athlon 64 is that they're somewhat common, and most people will let you have a system based off of it for free since it's basically worthless by today. Also, PCIe support makes sourcing GPUs a lot easier than poking around for good AGP-based cards.

Go for it my dude.

AGP cards aren't too hard to find on my Craigslist listings, but finding ones better than my GeForce4 MX420 are surprisingly challenging.
