[Poseidon] A relic from the past? - Quad 1080Ti

For Science!

Done!

So...I built a system for our needs: Quad-graphics card are a relic from the past for gamers, but very much relevant for scientific computing.

Specs

CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X

RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum 96 GB (6 x 16 GB)

Motherboard: ASUS Zenith Extreme

GPU: GTX 1080 Ti (top one being an MSI Aero variant)

Storage: Samsung 960 Evo x 3 + Crazy 5 x 3.5" inch HDD dock in the 5.25" bay

CPU Cooler: H100i v2

PSU: EVGA 1600W

Case: Corsair 900D

Fans: Corsair ML120 Basic

Now, if I said that my choice of case, and graphics card (in particular, the MSI Aero) didn't have ulterior motives, I would be lying. The parts below should give you an idea of what is to come.

man if you're going to have that much radiator , you should have just bought an actual radiator , heck would probably be larger and cheaper than 3 "pay more for pc specific" radiators.

We've finished installing the waterblocks on the GPUs. We specifically chose the reference design PCB 1080Tis for this build since the conversion process makes them into a 1-slot card. This allows us to use the 10-gigabit ethernet that comes with the Zenith Extreme board that was previously unmountable due to the dual-slot graphics cards.

We have chosen to use Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut for the GPUs for their great performance in a recent roundup. It was a bit of an ass to spread, quite thick compared to more traditional thermal compounds, hopefully it'll be worth it.

Forgot to upload the picture of the graphics card prior to the block installation. Nothing unusual, as the instructions except for the spreading of the TG Kryonaut over the die evenly. I found the EK thermal pads not very sticky and was worried that I hadn't peeled off the layer correctly, but turns out that is the way it is.

So... we're done. Everything went very smoothly. Bent tubes fine, filled fine, no leaks. Booted fine. Overall, a very easy installation.

Thanks for all the support, we are very happy with the thermal performance and flow rate of the loop. So its nice to know that a single loop for a quad1080Ti + 1950X using a dual D5 is suitable =).

  • 1 year later...

Slightly belated annual maintenance, but finished without anything going wrong.

- Upgraded 1950X --> 2990WX

- Upgrade TR4 block to a monoblock

- Re-bend some tubes

- Changed coolant to Navy

- Up my photography game since last year

Honestly, don't know since its a linux workstation, but I would imagine the Nvidia drivers won't play nice with the graphics cards (or at least 2 of them would be completely paperweights).
