Dual (or possibly even single) vs triple channel makes a difference. Only the last bit of the memory runs in single channel if you have 3 of the sticks in same coloured slots, so the difference is small most of the time.

Just got my systems cooling upgradet and new SSD/HDD drives in it. The new cooling alowed for a higher 24/7 OC also now.

System spec is:

I7 980X @ 4.42 GHz

Noctua NH-D14 with 3 120 MM fans mounted

ASUS P6X58D Premium motherboard

12 GB corsair triple channel 1600 MHz DDR3 ram (6 X 2 GB)

2 X Samsung 950 PRO M.2 NVMe 256 GB SSD for OS and games.

Crucial MX300 2 TB sata SSD for games

WD AV-GP 2 TB HDD

WD RED 4 TB HDD

EVGA GTX 1080 TI SC2 GAMING

Thermaltake ToughPower 1500 Watt PSU

Antec Twelve Hundred case

Windows 10 PRO 64 bit

And a bunch of Corsair ML120/140 fans and 3 NZXT SENTRY 3 fan controllers.

Old dusty fans and fan controller.

rOEUb97.jpg

New fans and controllers

Lx3xgiP.jpg

New CPU oc and temp that is still in the high end but its same temp as before where the cpu only ran 4.2 GHz vs. now 4.42 GHz.

The system with the new fans and controllers installed.

Hardware around it gets replaced and worn down like fans and HDD. But X58 it self just keep going strong.

@Intelfreak, that is some serious lovin' you got going there. Byt why the two small 40 mm screamers in the back and three controllers? Isn't it five fans on each controller so two would have been enough?

The small screamers Arent so bad. They are more silent than i would guess them to be. They are there for suck hot air away from GPU (since this card is not with radial fan, those small fans take some of the hot air out in sted) and keep the hot air away from the two m.2 to pcie adaptors for my two M.2 SSD. happy hardware is cool hardware right.

The 3 controllers is because they have there own funktion. They have a tempeture sensor so they can run fans on auto but i can off cause take over manuel as well. one controls case fans (temp sensor on chipset), one controls CPU fans and the last one controls fans around GPU. That way the hot parts gets cooled properly depending on load and heat in sted of all fans ramp up and down. With 3 controllers i can control fans more specifik to the given hotest part under load.

And yeah i love X58. It just keeps going and have served me well since 2009 where i started out with a I7 920 to this day. So in return i want to help it being cool under stress and as you may know chipset on X58 gets pretty hot when x58 is under high oc.

A little update to the post i made on June 17.

After i got tempature sensors from the fan controllers sat the correct places, i saw something i dit not like. Motherboard chipsæt got fairly hot in the very hot summerdays (over 35 degress celsius in the hottest time of the day) we have where i live right now and then mix the high out side temperatures with a high clockket CPU at 4.42 GHz at 1.41 volts and a GTX 1080 TI that can put out a good amount of heat (when oc op to 300 watts of heat) when i game. I think you can guess that chipsæt gets pretty toasty when the pc is under high stress like demanding games or benchmark.

So i had two options either lower OC on CPU and GPU or put some fans on the chipsæt. I chose fans on chipsæt and in the same round i replaced the cpu cooler fans as well to get the CPU cooled properly in these hot summerdays with out have to lower my OC.

So these are the new fans i got. With a high static pressure as well a CFM. These are perfect for the job. Noise is a bit higher, but noctua can make high performances fans without the high pitch high RPM fans else can have. Dont get me wrong, they are still loud a max RPM, but they have a more pleasant sound than the old Silver Stone FM121 120 MM fans i used before that suffers from high pitch.

5sQFpmU.jpg

syvISKx.jpg

So after another replacing of fans, the systems looks like this now. Try to look pass the cable ties holding CPU cooler now. Had to do it else the cooler would hit the small fans on chipsæt and make a bad noise. Yeah as a fellow nerd you properly know how it sounds if something hits a fan, not a nice sound. But oh boy are cable ties great for other things than holding cables.

XBRT2dj.jpg

yhMPOxT.jpg

So here are what is new other than cpu fans. Chipsæt now has fans and the fans next to GPU as exhaust is now 60 MM fans, just cut not find any one in black so had to take what i cut get.

Thanks. Yeah Zip ties are a wonderful invention. So simple and yet so dam useful to many things. Building a pc with out zip ties is a hell when as i do mounting fans or other things where they where not ment to be placed at first. Some of the solutions i make is just not possible with out zip ties.

I never start a build for my self or frineds with out having zip ties next to me.

Hey guys

i recently got into x58 and replaced the i7 920 for a x5660.

overclocking is a nice challenge compared to these modern boards where all you really need is voltage and multiplier setting changes.

so what would a avg overclock be for a x5660?

i'm currently at 4.5GHz (21x215) @1.370V cooled by a Noctua D14 temps max out at 73C in Prime95

i'm getting 1020~ points in cinebench r15

i'm willing to go to 1.4V just to see what max clocks i can get out of my chip but i'm not to sure yet, so let me know!

any tips are welcome of course!

I think that is already a pretty good overclock! it is nice to hit 4.5 on less than 1.4V you could try going higher but it would seem that some of the chips don't like going too much higher without major cooling and upping the voltage too much more will start to impact your cooling. If you do want to go higher though try talking to @Ground as they are our regular overclocking person

alright thank you!

not sure if you or anyone knows but how uptodate is the hwbot site for cinebench r15 for x5660 cpu's? click HERE for the link.

if that is uptodate i can get top 10 i'm sure.

i'm not familiar with hwbot website so i wouldn't know how to get on that list.

EDIT: nvm that, i checked out the website and it's pretty easy to submit a score.

That's a really good overclock all around. I'd call it a day at that!

Mine barely does 4.5 @1.4. It'll do 4.7 GHz but it's well past the point diminishing returns. I'm also using a 240mm AIO cooler, not an air cooler, so you're doing extremely well!

Agreed with the others. You are already getting a pretty solid oc. To reference the I7 980X i have needs 1.41 volts to just do 4.42 GHz. So 4.5 GHz at 1.37 volts is not to shabby.

thank you guys for responses

it's 100% stable at those settings, i use it as encoding pc and am really happy with it

going from 4.4 to 4.5 i didn't really notice much of a performance gain either, but i do want to see how far i can push and see what cinebench R15 score i can get.

i might go for some leaderboard hunting on hwbot, seems fun to do ^^

For Cinebench R15. Well here is a goal for you to beat then :P. My CPU doing 1103 at 4.75 GHz.

il will report back tomorrow for sure :P

not sure how big of a factor it is but i only have a 4pin cpu power going to the motherboard and on full load it pulls about 165W and that cable is getting hot.

so tomorrow new psu incoming and i will try to beat that score.

i want at least to get above 1100 (i think that would be impressive for my chip
