Rumour Squashed: AMD Won’t Be Licensing Graphics Chips to Intel

Source 1: http://fortune.com/2017/05/23/amd-intel-chips/

Source 2: https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/17/05/9512315/amd-ceo-puts-rumors-to-rest-were-not-looking-at-enabling

  • IT website Fudzilla, claimed a deal had been reached between AMD and Intel on May 16 after a previous licensing deal between Intel and NVIDIA Corporation expired in March.

    • the Fudzilla story read:

"We can now confirm the rumors that Intel has given up on Nvidia because it has written a cheque to license AMD’s graphics,”

  • Even though AMD made no mention of an Intel deal at the company’s analyst day on May 16, Fudzilla appeared to stand by its story in a follow-up report on May 18.

  • Fudzilla said its sources for the original story were “well-placed industry insiders” and that “the Intel and AMD deal will include Intel CPUs using Radeon graphics."

  • The Rumours were squashed on Monday when, AMD CEO Lisa Su said:

"”We're not looking at enabling a competitor to compete against our products."

“It's about how do we sell more products, or how do we have our IP in markets where we're not currently selling products.”

Intel’s Plan to Thunderbolt 3 All of the Things

Source 1: posted by AngryPandaPC https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/784170-thunderbolt-3-all-the-things/

Source 2:  https://www.wired.com/2017/05/intels-plan-thunderbolt-3-things/

  • Thunderbolt 3 still hasn’t gone mainstream, due to a combination of high cost and low availability

  • Now, Intel is taking two steps to accelerate adoption:

    • integrating Thunderbolt 3 into Intel CPUs,

    • making the Thunderbolt protocol specification available to third-party chipmakers, royalty-free, next year.

  • Intel:

    • “We think the first thing is going to drive broader adoption and deployment of Thunderbolt 3 in PCs,”

    • “The second will also drive broader adoption in the ecosystem, with a lot of different peripherals and other devices.”

  • Price:

    • “I think the integration into future CPUs will help reduce the overall solution cost on the computer. And we’re continually working with the industry to lower the cost of the cables and the devices.”

    • He notes, too, that improving USB-C economies of scale should help Thunderbolt 3 drive down costs.

  • At the annual Google Marketing Next conference announced Google Attribution, a service that will let advertisers tie offline credit card payments to online marketing campaigns.

  • Here’s how it works:

    • It aggregates details about the ads displayed on your phone, the sites (and time) you visited, and what you've searched in Google.

    • Then it uses geolocation and WiFi network information from your phone to if you've gone to the mall or walked into a store that sells that product.

    • Finally, with the integration of payment data from "third-party partnerships," Google will know if you've bought that product and will report this in the advertiser's AdWords dashboard.

  • the system is driven by machine learning and combines data from Google's regular advertising campaigns with "third-party partnerships, which capture approximately 70% of credit and debit card transactions in the United States."

  • At its I/O '17 conference this week, Google shared details of its AutoML project, an artificial intelligence that can assist in the creation of other AIs.

  • The AutoML project focuses on deep learning, a technique that involves passing data through layers of neural networks. Creating these layers is complicated, so Google created AI that could do it for them.

  • An AutoML a controller neural net can propose a ‘child’ model architecture, which can then be trained and evaluated for quality on a particular task,”

  • So far, they have used the AutoML tech to design networks for image and speech recognition tasks.

    • the system matched Google’s experts for image recognition

    • it exceeded them in speech recognition, designing better architectures than the humans were able to create.

  • “If we succeed, we think this can inspire new types of neural nets and make it possible for non-experts to create neural nets tailored to their particular needs, allowing machine learning to have a greater impact to everyone,”

Europe Modernizes Media rules, keeps TV relevant

Source 1: posted by WMGroomAK https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/784148-eu-proposing-new-av-rules-more-european-streaming-content-stricter-anti-hate-rules/

Source 2: http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-16-1873_en.htm

  • The European Commission has presented an updated Audiovisual Media Services Directive, which describes the rules that governed audiovisual media in the EU

  • Concluding that a 'one-size-fits-all' approach to all modern platforms was not appropriate, the Commission wants to achieve a better balance of the rules which today apply to traditional broadcasters, video-on-demand providers and video-sharing platforms

  • The proposed new rules are:

    • Platforms which organise and tag a large quantity of videos will have to protect minors from harmful content (such as pornography and violence) and protect all citizens from incitement to hatred

    • The Directive will now ensure that regulatory authorities are truly independent from governments and industry, to ensure that audiovisual media act in the interest of viewers.

    • The Commission wants TV broadcasters to continue to dedicate at least half of viewing time to European works and will oblige on-demand providers to ensure at least 20% share of European content in their catalogues.

    • The revised Directive gives broadcasters more flexibility as to when ads can be shown

      • the overall limit of 20% of broadcasting time is maintained between 7 am and 11 pm, but instead of the current 12 minutes per hour, broadcasters can choose more freely when to show ads throughout the day.

Samsung S8 Iris Scanner is Easily Hackable

  • A Chaos Computer Club researcher has discovered realized that by taking a photo of a phone owner's face, an attacker with physical access to the device can able to unlock the phone just by printing the photo on paper and flashing it in front of the phone's front camera.

  • But modern iris scanners and facial recognition systems are programmed to use image depth in order to distinguish between (2D) photos and a human's real (3D) eye.

  • Researchers bypassed this hurdle by gluing a contact lens on top of the image, creating a round surface on top of the iris photo to trick the phone.

  • Ironically, the best results  were achieved by printing the iris photos using a Samsung laser printer.

  • Bungie revealed that Destiny 2 won’t use dedicated servers

  • Unlike the original Destiny, where matches were hosted on one player's console, "every activity in Destiny 2 is hosted by one of [Bungie’s] servers,"

    • "That means you will never again suffer a host migration during your Raid attempt or Trials match."

  • But those servers won't handle all the data for every player in the game.

    • Each player is authoritative over their own movement and abilities

    • "This allows us to give players the feeling of immediacy in all their moving and shooting—no matter where they live and no matter whom they choose to play with."

  • While Bungie can’t promise that lag-induced glitches will be completely eliminated in Destiny 2, they say this server model should lead to a definite reduction

  • The “AmazonFresh Pickup” spots let shoppers buy groceries online and pick them up in as little as 15 minutes

  • Each location has parking spaces beneath canopies similar to those seen at gas stations.

  • Grocery sales have been slow to shift online, leaving Amazon at a disadvantage to competitors like Wal-Mart.

  • Amazon is experimenting with brick-and-mortar concepts to get a toehold in grocery sales while its competitors add online options to their existing stores.

I'm also sad to see the original LMG staff either leaving or moving on to other projects.I wasn't like super early to LTT, but I was early enough to watch them grow and evolve and I know it's just nostalgia, but I miss when it was just a handful of people who we grew familiar with, at least in front of the camera is what I mean.

Personally I agree with that first option of making channel super fun uploads unscheduled. I don't really look forward to watching it on a weekly basis as much as other content.

It's how things go in professional environments: people eventually grow out of what they've been doing for a while. We tend to think in personal terms, where fruitful relationships tend to linger, but at a professional level departures can be as much a sign of success when they involve a step forward for the particular person leaving.

Berkel was always the cheerful, energetic guy on camera. Wish him a successful future. Hope he can show up on a CSF or WAN show one last time to say goodbye.

As per CSF content, I think a tight schedule is not necessary. A new CSF video is a pleasant surprise, but not something I watch regularly.

I think restricting the editing time on CSF videos is a good way to go, I personally just enjoy seeing you guys having fun. I can see why editing them in a rush can make it stressful. I quite like to watch these while nursing a hangover :P

Also, can I request that the WAN show be uploaded to floatplane as well? I realize it might be wasted bandwidth, but for some reason videos streamed through floatplane are much smoother than YouTube (potato PC?)

Just got this idea for The last tune up that Luke had mentioned on the Wan Show.

Nicky V should paint a picture of himself under Linus' car hood and trunk door, or tape a self picture into the back wind shield, so every time linus opens the truck, hood, or looks into the rear view mirror, he sees Nicky V. :P

or maybe one of these, but with Nicky V
