Intel 7900x and Gigabyte X299 AORUS Gaming 7 leaked in benchmark

With the leak in SiSoftware, we've gotten the first glimpse into the next high-end Extreme edition from Intel. I don't think it's gonna be a good competitor to Ryzen given the new SKUs from AMD.  What I find interesting however is that it's currently being billed in as a Core i7 when rumors were hinting at the new Core i9 platform but it does confirm the threads and core counts. Currently, it has a higher TDP at 175W compared to the 6950x and currently has 12MB less of L3 cache an the 6950x. 

 

How it compares to other CPUs as per the article:

The base frequency of the 7900X is 3.3 not 4.0.  It was probably turbo-ing up to 4.0 when that benchmark sampled it.  It has 2.5x as many cores as a 7700K, it's obviously not going to be able to hit a 140W TDP at the same frequency :)

Where did you see 3.3? I only see 4.0/4.5, which would mean a 4.5 boost, which would be insane.

  I checked more, it looks like the "base" basically is 4.0 with Turbo, even with all 10 cores active.  Meaning  as long as you don't exceed thermal limits or whatever the Turbo 2.0 criterial is, it'll be 4.0.  But under shitty conditions it'll drop to 3.3.

Doesn't that slide say it will turbo boost 3.0 up to 4.5? 

 

EDIT: And if my eyes arent decieving me, it says it will turbo boost 2.0 up to 4.3.

Yes.  Turbo 3.0 is only single core though because it's up clocking the best core on the package.  Turbo 2.0 applies to 1-10 active cores and doesn't discriminate on which cores get that clock.

It would appear that the benchmark tool is taking the Turbo 2.0 as the base clock (4.0) and Turbo 3.0 as the max boost clock (4.5).

 

EDIT: I re-read.  4.3 is probably the 1-2 core Turbo 2.0 limit.  10 core limit is the 4.0 number.

Sigh.... You really don't get how these things work at intel do you? The 6950x (140W TDP) consumes the same amount of power as the "95W" 1800X, and ALL HEDT processors share the same package TDP (the 6-core 6800K being labeled as a 140W just as the 10 core is, even though obviously they don't share the same power consumption), so with the top tier chip being a 4.0 GHz+ 12 core chip, yeah 175W seems very reasonable.

Probably the CCX thing combined with lower clock speeds.....

Both at 4ghz and the 1800x is about the same idle power consumption iirc. I don't see why the CCX layout would be beneficial to power consumption. 

 

Maybe ryzens power delivery, IMC, or platform is more efficient. It could also have something to do with the iGPU maybe.

7700K is at 4.2-4.5GHz and has a stock Vcore of 1.2 or so V.

Toms found the 1800X to use less power in gaming than 7700K as well, even when OC'd.

 

It'll be interesting to see how x299 holds up there as well. Hopefully they use proper soldered tim on everything like with X99.
