Intel Launches Kaby-Lake Xeons

8 processors are being released today but low power varients will be later released. They will all be using the LGA1151 socket and using the C232 and C236 chipsets with a bios update. 

The processors ending with '5' (1275, 1245, 1225) will have Intel HD P630 integrated graphics that will run at up to 1150 mhz and is based on HD630 graphics. The high-end E3 v6 parts will have a maximum base frequency of 3.9 GHz base and a 4.2 GHz turbo. All the parts listed have a full 8MB of L3 cache, and either be 72W for non-IGP models or 73W for IGP parts. As with other previous Xeons, these come with ECC memory support, vPro and other technologies Intel files under the professional level. In Intel’s presentations, Intel SGX (Software Guard Extensions) are included, however TSX (Transactional Extensions) were not listed.

This essentially means that Optane Memory support is already baked into the chipset, and it is merely a firmware approval of a CPU and chipset combination in order for it to be enabled. Sooo, what I can make out from the chart is that there is about an $11.00 premium for the Xeons with an iGPU and for some reason the 1280 v6 is going to cost nearly $300.00 more than the 1270 v6.  Is there something I'm missing about the 1280 v6 that gives it that premium price???  I mean, if I'm buying one of these Xeons, then I might as well go with the 1270 or 1275 and save some cash...

1231v3 was about the same price when released.

No. This is the very standard pricing for the 1230/1231 Xeon.

That E3-1275 looks pretty compelling for a NAS/PLEX server platform for the price, especially for those of us with a significant chunk of their library in x265.

I believe so, but don't quote me on it. I know Handbrake can for sure, and I'm using it to re-encode remuxes into x265 all the time.

Now I'm curious, I always assumed that transcoding would be completely CPU limited.....maybe I'll test it later, not that it matters, my plex server is running on a 1230v2.

As fas as I know, only H.264 and HEVC are supported. I don't know if x265 is available yet.

It does hardware encoding, so I wouldn't assume so except for the CPU instructions.

Hopefully Coffee Lake will have a 4c/4t i3, 4c/8t i5, and 6c/12t i7 (it would also be nice if Celerons saw a price drop....they've been priced so closely to Pentiums that they basically never made sense and far less so now that Pentiums are now hyperthreaded).

Where's the Xeons I know, with price points around the same area as a small yacht, and the core count looks like Mama June stepped on the scale and Intel said "yeah that's how many we'll put in it". These are actually reasonably priced, and have average core/thread counts. WTF INTEL???

These have always been the consumer Xeons. The 20-cores Xeons aren't usually marketed towards general consumers.
