4GB sounds about right. 8GB honestly sounds ridiculous for 1080p.

If you're looking towards 1440p in the future 8GB could be handy though.

Our Father Birb has taught us with His humble heart and gentle wing the way of the bob. Let us show Him our reverence and follow in His example. Having more VRAM is better than having less.

Tell that to the 960 4GB users that have trouble with 3GB of usage.

RX 480 uses about:

6GB+ for VR

4-8GB for 4k

2-6GB for 1440p

1-5GB for 1080p (more if you use crazy textures)

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

IRL experience, this is in games like skyrim where you have crazy textures etc.  It does happen sometimes and I'd be lying if I said it didn't exist.

VRAM usage depends on the card, not that much the game. I run a 6g card and neveer have a problem in any game or VR.

That said, if someone offers you two sizes of VRAM. You say the biggest.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

It's a pay me now, or pay me later situation. The difference between the 4g and 8g cards is a good meal. Skip a meal.

4gb is "okay". Nothing more.

There are games already, where 4gb is not enough and causes you slight stuttering ;)

Go for 8gb if you want any future proof. GTX 1060 6gb > RX 580 4gb (if that one is cheaper...)

Remember, you don't buy the RX 580 for today only, and tomorrow you order the next one. You buy it for the next 2-3 years.

4gb is "just okay" today, but 8gb is better. In 2 years, 4gb WILL be too low for many games. Don't save those few bucks and cripple yourself ;)

However, if you don't care at all, if your game uses Ultra textures, or Mediaum/high textures, you are fine with 4gb.

I don't always bottleneck, but when I do I prefer Dos Futureproofs.

Well, if you don't want to think about the future, just get the cheaper one?! ^^

YOU are the one, that might have to tweak (texture-/Shadow) Settings in some games in the next years...

but like i said, some games break 4gb already. Deus Ex MD on Ultra can break 7gb in 1080p (because those ultra textures are too hardcore).

Rise of the Tomb Raider can break 6gb.

btw: The Resolution is not the most important thing when it comes to the question "How much Vram is needed".

Texture size is MUCH more important than Resolution only.

4k + Medium textures consume less vram, than 1080p + ultra textures.

So, it just depends on the Application and the Settings. Not the Resolution.

Don't get me wrong, it's not like 8gb will be perfect, and 4gb will be a stutter fest. The differences will be mostly small, but still there.

Also keep in Mind, the 4gb Model also has slower Memory. 1750 Mhz, isntead of 2000 Mhz. That also will give you less performance.

Allright :) Then i guess, you can let your Budget decide.

None of them will be a "fail buy" or anything.

Thanks.
