i5 4690k with 1070 (or 1080?) Gonna work?

Majorllama

So I have my build from last year that im wondering if its worth to upgrade my GPU or not... I have an  i5 4690k overclocked to 4.2 paired with a 970 currently that I am enjoying, but im looking to possibly grab a 1070 or maybe even a 1080 if the prices drop enough after the 1080ti drops.

Im wondering if my CPU will hold back those cards...

I mean I don't really know why it'd be necessary to upgrade yet..

In my opinion, I'd wait for a price drop on the 1080 if you're going to do it.

Depends on the resolution. You using a 970 would suggest 1080p, no need to upgrade if thats the case. But for 1440p+, it would work well.

970s are fine for 1440p but for 4k or 21x9 1440p the 1070 is needed

Yup, a i5 4690K will hold back a GTX 1070 at 1080p 144Hz in more than a few titles. For people seeking beyond 60FPS and trying to get into high refresh rate gaming, it's often advised to get an i7.

Didn't know that you wanted 144 fps. I guess it depends on the games your playing, but with an i5 it's pretty hard to get 144 fps

Even then, an i7 struggles to get 144 fps in a lot of games too

If you really want to max games out fully you could upgrade to a 1070, but even just turning down settings a little will get you there already (1080/ti is overkill for this).

Your CPU wouldn't be a bottleneck, not hardly. Linus just recently went over how nonessential and incremental Intel has been. Go with the 1070 it's the better card price to performance.

Why? Multiple people (including Linus) have pointed out that gaming on more than 4 strong cores has little effect on frame rate (bar seriously outdated CPUs)

CPU will be fine all the way up to 1440p @ 144Hz.

The 1070 is not a big enough upgrade (especially if you want 1440p @ 144Hz) go for 1080 or 1080TI.

( 1070 works fine at 1440p - but wont consistently get to 144hz at that size - it's the minimum card for 1440p though ).

Yeah im leaning more for the 1070 since the 1080 just seems like too much of a stretch for my liking.

an i5 4690k would be perfectly fine for either of the two.

Like anything, it depends on what game. I wouldn't stop myself from getting a GTX1080 for a couple of games. You can also keep that 1080 for much longer allowing you to get a 1440 panel.

Those games would run fine with that CPU then, this is why people need to list the games they're going to play when discussing bottlenecking.

If you said GTA 5 or fallout 4 then I'd say it's just very difficult to get 144 fps on any cpu with those games

I mean I HAVE all those games and more... Like... I have all the games I want, but only care about maxing out and staying about 144 for a few of them. haha

For games like GTAV and Fallout 4 I usually cap myself off at 60 and just enjoy the stability.

That's what matters at the end. If you're getting the performance you want, it's all good unless you're drastically under-powered somewhere.
