[UPDATE] Next BlackBerry device announced

blackberry-neon.jpg

[UPDATE]: The device as been officially unveiled, it's name is the DTEK50. BB defines it as the most secure smartphone in the market and  will apply 0-day patches as soon as possible. Official specs are:

Quote

The BlackBerry DTEK50, as we expected, sports a Snapdragon 617 processor, a 5.2-inch display with a 1080p resolution, a 13-megapixel camera, an 8-megapixel front-facing camera and a 2,610mAh battery. It also has 3GB of RAM, which should help keep things snappy under the hood. It runs Android Marshmallow.

And as someone as mentioned here it does indeed look a lot similar to the Alcatel idol 4. Starting Price 299 (It's already dead on arrival).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next device that BlackBerry will introduce next week has been leaked. The BlackBerry Neo will follow the footsteps of the Priv and ship with Android with mid range specs

Quote

It’s said to sport a relatively mid-range feature set with a Snapdragon 617 processor, a 5.2-inch 1080 display, 13MP/8MP cameras and 3GB of RAM

Hopefully they price it right (around the 200 mark i'd say) unlike the Priv.

Wish it's a 720P display.  The Snapdragon 617 is so sluggish at 1080p.

Looks sleek for a mid range, i think it looks awesome, but i also think that this will be something that people above 30 are going to buy for themselves

Details separate people.

Retails at 405 CAD and 345 CHF.

No idea how much that would be in USD or euros :P

Also it looks very very similar to an alcatel idol 4 which is imo not a good sign...

I want a mid-range slider like the priv for ~200-300. Would pick it up in a heartbeat.

I'm finally at the point where I can say i'm not interested in a new phone unless it has type-C. I'll buy a used phone (because i'm a huge cheapskate) but if I commit to a new phone, I'm planning on having it for two years.

I agree. I have a nexus 6 right now and I just realized that google may release another phone around sep-oct if they do a once every year thing. If so I will get that, if not I will hold on the nexus 6 till that happens.

I would too, but even second hand it's like ~400-500€ here, and the inability to root the thing is kinda off-putting as well.

Still tho, I would get it simply for the keyboard.

Yeah right... They are protected from "being hacked" because BlackBerry will just hand them over when asked.

Your privacy is at risk as soon as you start using a BlackBerry service.

check the competition, 300 for such a device is flat out over priced, doesn't stand a chance just like the Priv

If there was a Windows Phone with those specs for the same price and similar design I would be highly interested in it and I might buy it.

Android is in a race to the bottom where manufacturers have to cram in more specs to make people happy while also reducing price.

This is not sustainable and you are contributing to this by refusing to buy it at the MSRP.

$299 is perfectly reasonable for these specs. You are so used to Chinese OEMs with the cheapest phones and best specs that you've forgotten to come back to reality. The reality is that phones are either cheap or have good specs.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

Is Alcatel a Chinese company? Let's time i checked the Idol 4 (phone they literally took to make this) costs, wait for it... 200$! The only way for this to cost beyond that, was to rip-off the Alcatel 4S (spec sheet here) and just like Alcatel include a case, a screen protector and a VR headset. This phone is grossly overpriced even when ignoring the chinese market

Not sure what planet you live on, but you do not seem to be from Earth.

1) Android is not in a race to the bottom. In fact, flagship phones has gotten more and more expensive as time goes on. The S7 is way more expensive than the S2 was at launch. What has happened is that we see a wider spectrum of Android devices than what we have seen before. Both the low, medium and high end devices has gotten a lot better in the last couple of years.

2) How is it not sustainable to increase performance while also reducing price? Electronics becomes cheaper as time goes on.

3) What is he refusing to buy at the MSRP? This phone? Yeah, because it is not that good at the MSRP. What is he contributing to? Increasing price:performance? Good. We should all contribute towards that.

4) 300 dollars for this is not appealing. It's just a rebranded Alcatel Idol 4.

And yes that is right, this is a rebranded Alcatel Idol 4. So you know those "cheap Chinese OEMs" that you seem to dislike? This phone is designed and built by them, and then BlackBerry just puts their sticker on it.

Would you buy this phone for 300 dollars if it had an Alcatel sticker on it instead of a BlackBerry one?

No it's not. And Alcatel is a company focusing on budget. Alcatel is the minority. Not the majority.
