Ghetto Build Log - Edzel's Video Editing Rig Upgrade

LinusTech

Love it!

Are you getting any issues with the different cards? - Nvidia state that you cannot run a Geforce and a Quadro in the same machine due to driver issues etc...

What drivers are you using in the system? - which did you install first?

Are you using a monitor on each GPU?

Do the applications register the Quadro or Geforce as expected / wanted / needed? - I'm thinking something similar but for CAD and Gaming... so, I'm interested in this build a lot!

No, you're not hallucinating, or maybe you are... either way, I'm back. ~ Linus 2015

What's the card reader used? I rarely see any 5.25" ones. They're all 3.5" and my case only has 5.25" drive bays. Thanks

The Case Bitly link takes you to a 900D. No worries anyway; Great build :)

What are the ramifications of changing the motherboard on a system without reinstalling Windows?

having old drivers still on the system. I did it myself and regret doing so because i replaced an MSI mobo with a Gigabyte one and though some drivers worked i had to install new ones and i still don't know were the old drivers went...

My System Specs: (Short list) i7 4770k, GTX 780, many SSD's, a 2 TB HDD(deceased :( ), Corsair 650D. Full list: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/kchriz6097/saved/8dh7YJ

Upgrade Plan: Acquire some Black Noctuas then add 16 or 32GB of 2133MHz memory

@LinusTech @Slick

I consider you guys to be authorities in this domain: how many watts do I really need?

I have an order with NCIX right now (I know you aren't working their anymore), but many of their builders (i.e. NCIX technicians and staff) say I need a 650W to 750W for this build (premium assembly):

  • Asus Maximus VI Impact
  • G.Skill RipjawsX 2x8GB 1866MHz (1.5V)
  • i7-4770k
  • Corsair h100i
  • 2x Noctua NF-F12
  • Samsung 840 Evo 250GB
  • WD Black 1TB
  • 1-2 supplied case fans (for Corsair 250D)
  • eVGA Titan Black (reference)

All being powered by be quiet! Dark Power Pro 550W. Is it really not enough? TTL made a video on this topic very recently and powered a comparable system with a 450W PSU. I plan on using the computer mainly for Cuda Compute Apps, and some games.

If it's plenty, I hope you can walk on over and talk some sense into them. I, otherwise, told them to test with the 550W PSU and get back to me if it fails.

I'm assuming that they aren't going to overclock my build when they stress-test the system.

Yes 550W will be enough to power your system as this example system is overclocked and the max power consumption was around 372W (cpu was overclocked):http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/geforce_gtx_titan_review,9.html which still leaves room for overclocking your gpu.

The power consumptions for Titan Black and Titan are the same:

http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-titan/specifications

http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-titan-black/specifications

Please read the CoC as you just necroed a thread. You should have created a new thread in Cases and Power supplies.

As a side note, I did tell NCIX that I would be cool if you wanted to feature/test my system on LTT. If not to build it, but, perhaps do some benchmarks on the Titan Black reference. They told me you don't work at NCIX anymore.

Sorry about that, @mgsstar. I do have a thread in Cases & Power Supplies. It just keeps going back & forth (not enough and more than enough). I just hoped that posting here would get someone who has a more authoritative opinion to read it. Also, since the same PSU was featured in this build, again comparable build, except an extra GPU (the quadro).

go make your own tread on this topic with linus tagged in it. so stop it.
