Microsoft actively blocking torrent usage

i havent used torrents in years. what people still use them for, programs? streaming music is easier than ever, and i can just use a youtube2mp3 plug-in on a website to convert on the fly. that's about the only time i ever did used torrents was for music.

It might be bogus, but it might also be something they are rolling out in stages, or a regional thing. Maybe they are only doing it to specific clients (or versions of clients) right now. We don't know yet.

Yes, because getting such software is so difficult. I mean you have to LIFT your arm... move it to the mouse... ah man! And then you need to use the keyboard... WOW. wow.. no. This is clearly involves 3 year project right there. And millions of dollars. No one here can test this. No one!

Yea I don't know. I have Netflix and Music streaming, all my stuff is legit.

I just installed it, and ran it to see, and it runs fine.

 

I don't think he installed it from the official site, or the download got corrupted (giving the benefit or the doubt) or 100% fake.

Wasn't that when you initially upgraded to Windows 10? If so, I think it is reasonable for them to disable/remove programs that are going to cause issues. It can always be reinstalled. 

 

But last I checked, there are still torrent client apps in the Windows Store...if MS was going to "ban" clients from Windows 10 you'd think they'd start there.

 

Also food for thought; removing applications with an update or at any time happens all the time on basically every other consumer-focused platform, iOS, Android etc. Steam has even removed games from people's libraries that they paid for.

Or, something forcing the bittorrent company to check all torrent file's hashes against a blacklist when they're opened with the client? I can see someone making that argument.

So, who else is this affecting exactly? Other than who I assume is the OP?

 

My best guess here is that his install just got corrupted or there was something fishy in it and the malicious software removal tool of microsoft got rid of it during the last update yesterday. Use a different client, like Tixati and it will work perfectly fine.

I would (and did) switch, simply for the fact that it's a piece of shit JVM program. It used to crash endlessly on any computer I used it on (Obviously, some people may have used it without issue), and there were glitches where not all of the stats/speed monitoring along the bottom of the window would should up - sometimes it would just be white space where normally it would show speeds and stats.

 

Anyway, the amount of time it took to switch (Literally, like 3 minutes), was by far worth it for me in the end.

I am simply unable to replicate the result suggested by the OP. That seems to be a conflict in the software configuration with that version of BitTorrent. There are many other clients out there, and there has not been a single trace of complaints of this happening,

 

Also I doubt that you can use yourself as a source on Tech News. If there is a matter that concerns you, then report it in the relevant sub-forum. If there is some weight to the concern, someone else will report it as a news post, in LTT or elsewhere.

It could be that the application has became corrupt, may just require a reinstall or it could be the user has downloaded the bittorrent installer from another site which is causing the issues?

It does state on the bittorrent installer not to download from anywhere other than the legitimate download location.

I have no issues with running bittorrent on my PC.

Except they've done both.  And tried to exclude software on a rather larger level than a specific single application.
The reason Internet Explorer is built into the UI is because they wanted to prevent users being able to use Netscape Navigator from within Windows OSs.. It took some pretty nasty press and pressure from the US Trade department to 'convince' them to allow other browers to still operate in it regardless.
(but they left IE integrated to make other browsers less efficient)

Except they've done both.  And tried to exclude software on a rather larger level than a specific single application.
The reason Internet Explorer is built into the UI is because they wanted to prevent users being able to use Netscape Navigator from within Windows OSs.. It took some pretty nasty press and pressure from the US Trade department to 'convince' them to allow other browers to still operate in it regardless.
(but they left IE integrated to make other browsers less efficient)

Except: IE is no longer part of explorer since Vista. You could always run Netscape navigator just fine from day 1.

Not really no. Consumer protection laws applies. Microsoft can't block software by law, as that would be anti-competitive, and possibly touch right of speech/expression in many regions. You can bet EU would be on Microsoft tail. I am sure that EU would love a second gold table with the money they make from Microsoft.

 

So no, despite Microsoft pushing to do what it wants, it doesn't have carte blanche to do what it wants.
