As mentioned, this would be awful for spam; it would also encourage people to just post one thing and leave, so even fewer posts would convert to members of the community.

People have both usually spam email for sites that hold less value. I have 2 of those, one which I don't actually use anymore. Creating new email to Gmail or Yandex (whether you want it to be spied by US or Russia /s) is very fast and easy. And only requires backup email for recovery. I actually might have unused Yandex email too.

I've done admin stuff for forums for YEARS, and trust me, if it wasn't for the giant hassle, all forums should be invite-only. Spam is generated so fast and quickly, a 20 year old forum is a magnet for spam, even after it's been locked down. One spammer can easily make 10 years of work for one admin.
