Okay,

 

I made an account specifically for this, because it bothers me to no end how you handle this kind of project. Don't get me wrong, I love LTT, most of your videos are awesome and freaky and really well made. At least when it comes to consumer things. When it comes to enterprise stuff, you have mostly no idea and it shows. But you know what? That couldn't even be a problem. We can't know all the things all the time, gotta keep on learning and make progress right? 

Yes. But there is a place and a time for learning and messing around. And doing so with what I assume are mission ciritical systems is definitely not the time and place for it... 
To be honest I hope either of two things happen:

1) You get a professional handling all your servers and infrastructure and maybe get educated yourselfs over a longer period of time to actually know what you're doing. Or

2) it comes to bit you in the ass. You have been close to loosing ciritcal data before hand and it turned out okay. You seem to have learned not much from it. I hope its the first...

Has anybody really thought about what happens if this kind of infrastructre goes down? Do you know how to do a Gluster-cluster recovery? What happens during that recovery when files are unavailable? What do you do when you lose file forever? Can you reach a point where the business actually has to shutdown because you weren't able to handle your hardware properly? Imma just throw another word in here which opens another topic even more complex: "security". I really hope at least some (external) professional has had a look/ say in this infrastructure in that regard.

 

I could be completely wrong on this. Maybe you do all this stuff in the background and just keep your yankiness up in the videos. Then ignore all that i've said. Or maybe its accurate and you could take this piece of advice. 

 

Also some technical advice:

- idk what made you change to Gluster when you were talking about zfs in all the vids before (i assume because you wanted cluster/ multi-node support?) It clearly shows you had no real plan beyond "oh we need more storage" ... 

- All caching for this kind of usecase/ workload is completely pointless. Caching for large sequential files (8K footage, right?) (that are not even requested frequently) doesnt work.

@eldiabolo he has got plenty of connections in the industry. From 45 drives, Wendel from Level1techs to suppliers like supermicro and gigabyte.

These aren't mission critical, these are long term storage, the mission critical are the 2 SSD servers.

 

2. I'd argue he has, he stopped using workstation boards from ASUS in his severs and moved on to proper supermicro boards. I don't know if it is implemented but at one point there was supposed to be an hourly or nightly mirror of the SSDs servers to the DELTA (petabyte project) servers.

no, but he will call people when that is needed.

 

Building security was done by a professional company and they haven't been open with it (fair I wouldn't ether), for network they are behind a PFsense router/firewall.

 

guster on CentOS is being used for cluster, ZFS is the file system used. they've used this for years and it is what 45drives recommends for clusters

I'm guessing this video pre-dates the small fire they had in the server room due to what sounded like a combination of human error and a faulty UPS. I'm curious what happened with that and if we'll see any related videos as a result.

As an enterprise sysadmin that does a lot of design work, some of their stuff makes me cringe pretty hard. But it's... not terrible. A lot of the rules we live by can be ignored if you're a small company with management that is willing to either throw money at the problem, or are willing to deal with outages. Also, if you have great reliable backups that are tested often and can be relied upon.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to use a cloud service at this point? You could get a Google Drive unlimited storage plan for way less than the cost of all of the servers. The upload and download speed would probably be terrible though

The Gluster setup IS very easy.

 

I hope that both systems have redundant backup because it looks like that you configured it as a distributed volume and/or a distributed stripped volume which means that if either of the systems goes down, technically and theorectically, you'll lose half your capacity and half your data.

 

(If I remember correctly. This is why I ended up abandoning my GlusterFS deployment.)

I agree with what GDRRiley wrote below - ZFS is the local LVM/FS. GlusterFS is just installed on top of it so that they can cluster two servers together to get more total storage space across two servers.

These aren't mission critical, these are long term storage, the mission critical are the 2 SSD servers.

GlusterFS works but there are many, many, many caveats to that.

 

Like so many things Linux, when it fails, it fails in some of the most spectacular ways possible.
