HELP ME PLEASE

I just recently upgraded my set up.  I got an i3 9100f since it is a great value and highly rated, and to match that, a Z170A Gaming pro carbon because it also has lga 1151.  I also had to upgrade ram to be ddr4 for the new motherboard so I got 8gbOLOy Dimm ddr4 3000 MHz, not brand name, but I believe it had decent reviews on amazon and I am pretty sure it is properly installed in slot 2.  Any how, the indicator light says that there is an issue reading CPU.  I zip tied my fan to it, since there are motherboard capacitors in the way of the bracket for the fan.  I am almost out of zipties so I'd prefer this be resolved without dismounting my fan, if possible.  I also upgraded my case and added a couple drives, but I doubt they are involved.  Anyhow, I boot it up and all of my rgb turns on and the fans start, so it runs, but it must be failing POST because the monitor does absolutely nothing.  I haven't cleared CMOS yet and if you think it is a very possible fix, I will do so gladly, but there is stuff in the way right now. 

 

 

 

Also, I have a 500w PSU.

 

 

EDIT: I have decided I want to update the processor unless you can find a relatively cheap motherboard with a built in usb c slot like this one and four ddr4 slots that can at least kind of support 3000 MHz.

The motherboard doesn't support that cpu.

but nope it's not compatible, you need H310, B360, B365, H370, Z370 or Z390 to run an 8th or 9th gen CPU.

How low is that cooler? Probably means the Intel stock cooler is better if it's that small.

The cooler is touching a heat sink which is touching the processor.  Got any ideas for a budget processor that fits this motherboard, or Visa versa, a good motherboard that fits this CPU?  Preferably the latter.

tbh the 9100F is just a 6th or 7th gen i5 built with updated manufacturing process, same quad core design and you dont even have a working iGPU, even getting an older CPU wont hurt performance, only upgrade path

 

any H310, B360, B365, H370, Z370 or Z390 board you can afford will do

That motherboard doesn't support 9th gen cpu's, you need one with a 300 series chipset, so B360 or Z390.

Also, that cooler is meant for AMD, which is why it doesn't fit. May I ask why you don't just use the stock cooler that came with the cpu?

I spent a little bit of money on a thermaltake that said it fits most, I just need to have more RGB than my friends lol.

You need a new motherboard. You should do better research next time.

Uh oh. That's a terrible idea. It needs to be mounted properly even if there are other things, it should be mounted properly using screws and not a zip tie. With your new board, ensure your cooler properly mounts to the board. 

 

Expensive mistake.

Look, I am not the most tech savvy out there, I didnt realize that both socket and chipset matter to the motherboard and processor.  I don't plan on keeping that zipties, but I needed to install it because I actually bought that fan far before I got the motherboard and was out of money and wanted to see the cool fan glow.

Really?  Where do you think people start?  I have been building on this Dell Optiplex 980 and just haven't gotten to the motherboard or processor until now.  I don't know what I am doing with them, but by the end of this I will.  Try not to be so judgemental of me, or why did you even respond.  I'm looking for help not criticism.  Do you expect everyone who asks for help to know exactly what they are doing?  Go to a different forum, if that is the case.

I looked up kaby lake, as I see this is a filter you have added.  Will Intel Core i7-8700K work for me? Will all kaby lakes?  I want to compare benchmarks and user ratings, so I keep copy and pasting everything into user-benchmark.  Is there an easier way?

Look, I'm not trying to criticise you or be judgmental, all I said was that you should do better research before going out and buying all your parts.

Obviously I've done that.  I just didn't end up learning about the chipset, and now I have learned, sometimes you do it the hard way.  When I say I am not tech savvy, I am purposely humbling myself, I am saying that I am dumb compared to you and the other responders in this topic and I messed up here.  Also, I don't know how you imagine the zipties.  I have them going straight to the holes and they aren't pressing down on any components, also the fan doesnt have any extra vibration when you turn it on, it shouldn't be putting strain on anything at all.

8700K is 8th generation, your mobo supports 6th gen. So that means intel processors starting with the number 6. I see you're not going for too high end, if you're only going for an i3 and single channel ram (you should definitely go for dual channel, it is much faster I think even with that i3). Can you return either the mobo/cpu? What's the GPU you're using? If you can return either one of them I would just do that and get a new cpu/mobo that fits. Though if you plan on gaming with your system for a good while (~5 years) I would get a 6 core processor at minimum. You can find cheap 6 cores from both AMD and Intel, maybe something like AMD's Ryzen 2600 or 3600, or Intel's i5 9400. Going for a 4 core processor in 2020 if you plan on playing any modern titles for the years to come is basically shooting yourself in the foot. If you only play older titles it might not matter but if not definitely get a 6 core.

The 8700k is Coffeelake, you need to look at Skylake (6th gen) and Kabylake (7th gen)

It will work for your CPU but take some measurements and make sure it will fit in your case.

I'd get a cheap 300 series motherboard and keep the i3-9100f since:

1. The 9100f benches better than most cheaper 6th and 7th gen CPUs

2. A low end 300 series motherboard is cheaper new, than what most i5 6th and 7th gen chips are going for even on ebay.

3. Having a 300 series motherboard gives a much better path for upgrading to a better 8th or 9th gen CPU in the future.

Yes that will work with your i3-9100f, you don't necessarily need that high end of a board but up to you.

I know it's just an i3, and it doesnt sound like I have a very good build, but the i3 9100f has outstanding performance for the price, I'm trying to not need to update these components for a while, so I might as well spend a few dollars on the mobo.

Keep in mind that the 10th generation intel CPUs that are rumored to launch later this year will be using a new socket and chipset. So no matter how much money you spend on a 300 series motherboard now, you will be limited to a 9th gen CPU at the newest, without another motherboard replacement.
