Is a Q6600 and a GT610 still acceptable for gaming?

terrytek

NVidia made a GRAND mistake by creating the GT series. So not worth 20 bucks! Cheap, but crappy performance.

The 6570 is better.

A core 2 quad is ok but the 610 isn't meant for gaming.

My brother still uses a Q6600, They're a good CPU for how old it is, But you will need a better GPU. Try eBay and get a 6850/6870 even a 6950. They will probably be under $150 by now and you will be able to run all the games you wish to play.

OK, another question raises. If I overclock my CPU enough, will it be able to support a GK110 GPU, like the 770? (it is GK110? Or is it GK107?)

if you plan to max out all of thoose games you wil need to upgrade your cpu personally i have a 6300 and a 7870 and get 25~30 fps in ETS2 completely maxed so you will definitely need to have pretty good gpu as well

Probably not. Highest you should go is a 7790/7850/650/650Ti/650Ti Boost, maybe a 660.

I use a Q9650 and do fine in most games at 720 and 900P. CSGo is always over 100 FPS, dayZ is 30 and dips to 20 in citys. Still fine by todays standers. Just need a good GPU.

Back in 2012, ocaholic did a few comparison benches of old CPUs against a 3770k, and the Q6600

actually kept up reasonably well. The GPU was a 7970. Just as a side note. ;)

Didn't mean to like that post, kinda derped. Yeah, Q6600 will be fine. Maybe not maximum settings, but they'll definitely run respectably. If you can OC it you'll be great.

I can be a cynical a**hole at times. I apologize if I cause any offence at those time. I also occasionally have issues communicating my point. Extreme introversion + Photographic memory + Some other things.

The Q6600 is still a good gaming CPU, especially the 'G0" or SLACR chip, these can make >3ghz easily. I had a Q6600 + Asus P5W DH Deluxe setup a while back, and I had a HD5770 paired with it, it was able to handle most games at mid - high setting at 1080P. I had it at 3.1ghz though, it's now my sis-in-law's rig for productivity and daily use, with a little light gaming thrown in. Oh yeah, I'd kept the HD5770 for my 4th rig, bought a GTS450 since she was really into light gaming.

As for TS, I'd suggest slapping on a decent CPU cooler (if you haven't already gotten one) and OC that badboy, 3ghz or higher would be fine, and a GPU upgrade is definitely in order....a GTX760 or R9 270 or higher card would do.

The Q6600, when overclocked to 4GHz+ is competitive with a 3570K. The GT 610 however is not capable of anything. I would upgrade to a GTX 770, and overclock the Q6600 A LOT

It's GK104

You shouldn't pair a C2Q with a 770, A 760 might be a better choice with that CPU, or maybe a 660, R9 270, 7850/7870, etc.

Old shit no one cares about but me.

Contrary to popular belief, the Core 2 Quad is still a very capable gaming cpu. While the Q6600's stock speed is quite low, it is a great overclocker. I would put it underwater and go for 4GHz.

The Q9550 is a similar cpu, and performs roughly the same at 3.7GHz

Right now, I have a huge tower cooler on it, idle is about 100F. Not bad. Rock stable up to 3GHz. Anything above, blank screens.

The thing is, you assume the TS has a very good cooler and that he knows how to OC....besides, hitting 4ghz on a Q6600 isn't easy, and would require that TS mess with vcore (and possibly vdimm), which would raise the temp. Overdoing it would kill the CPU so, I'd not mention even trying for a 3.5ghz OC much less 4ghz OC. I'd managed a paltry 3.1ghz but this was done w/o putting up vcore....on default voltage actually.

But then you wouldn't have an overclocke Core 2 Quad. Besides he wouldn't need a full loop, And in order t get the 3570K, he would need a new mobo and new ddr3

65nm Core Quads are good all the way up to 1.55v or 1.6 if you want to push it a little. 4GHz should be easy if he has the cooling for it.

I don't think going underwater would be economical, considering the price of the components these days. Heck, my case doesn't even support dual 120mm rads, only external or a single 120mm fan.

Well, it's a 45nm process. I got to 3GHz on stock voltage, and has remained stable.
