Wikipedia has reached 6 million English articles!

minibois

Decided to 'source' this one in a Wikipedia/APA-like style ;) It is not 100% those standards, but close enough!

The English Wikipedia has reached 6,000,000 articles with Maria Elise Turner Lauder, 19th-century Canadian school teacher, writer and philanthropist,

created by Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight (User:Rosiestep) on 2020-01-23 at 18:59 UTC.

The very well-known online and free Encyclopedia Wikipedia has reach its 6 millionth article written in the English language[1], just a bit after its 19th birthday (being founded in January 15th 2001)[2].

All articles are - as we all likely know - free and open to anyone. Not only open to anyone to read, but also open to anyone to contribute. Thankfully the founders of Wikipedia - Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger[2] - did not have to write all these themselves. These 6 million articles have been written by a large team, consisting of millions of volunteering contributors around the world.

Article Amount Progress

This is about 5 years and 2 months after celebrating its 5 millionth article (in November 2015)[6].

Plotting all the 'millions'[7], we get a chart that looks a little something like this:

1206089177_AmountofarticlesontheEnglishWikipedia(x1million).png.cb2eaca745f0fb2ef30fa3e44206834a.png

With the 0 representing the start of Wikipedia, it seeing a huge shot up at 1 million to 3 million articles and now we're on a steady pace. Which does make sense, seeing as the 'simple' topics have been covered at this point.

Other Languages

Currently English is the largest Wikipedia language, with Cebuano closely following it at 5.3 million articles (with only 16 million native speakers as of 2005[3].. Impressive). Behind that we have Swedish, German, French and Dutch in that order.[4]

Shoutout!

I think I speak for everyone here, when I have to give Wikipedia a huge shoutout to giving us a free, easy to access platform to do all kinds of research. As much as there is truth in what our teachers say - that Wikipedia can be unreliable, because everyone can edit everything - Wikipedia's robust system for sources and amazing community support has made them a go-to place for almost everyone to learn more about anything.

Yeah but you can't trust any of those 6 million articles because they are all incorrect.

Since when is six million a round number worth celebrating? All it does is reminding me of the holocaust.

Doesn't most of the money end towards the Wikipedia Foundation, which does advocacy instead of you know only hosting the stuff?
