Is a 550w PSU fine for the Vega 56

Midniteb0ne

I'm planning to buy a new PC with an R5 1600 and Vega 56. I will upgrade my PSU to a CX 550.

Is this fine or should I get the seasonic m12ii 620w PSU. Both of them cost about the same.

@Stefan Payne has a Vega56 and has some experience with it with various PSUs, so he should be able to help with some recommendations.

Not the Seasonic M12ii though. The CX550 would be a far better choice between those two options.

It should be fine, but we need to know other components of the system.

Are there any other options tho? What about be Quiet! PP 11, Bitfenix Formula/Whisper M?

Ex-EX build: Liquidfy C+... R.I.P.

Ex-build:

Meshify C – sold

No, Vega 64, my OCD don't allow castrated Chips :)

And I agree, the Seasonic S12II up to 620W is to be avoided, ESPECIALLY for VEGA.

That thing is ~10 Years old and fails miserably against cheap units like Xilence Performance C. Not that I would endorse the xilence.

I was surprised how well my VEGA worked with my PSU and how little Problems I had, well except for the Seasonic P660 and the lower wattage Bitfenix Formula 450W with just one Rail (works fine with 2 Rails though).

I really don't get why people consider that ancient Seasonic unit these days. Especially for High End GPUs....

Its just a low end PSU that gets beaten by almost any low End PSU from the Competition: Cougar STX/VTX, Corsair VS, Cooler Master Master Watt Lite.
It just has some lipstick on it. And the Label isn't entirely correct either. States two 12V Rails where there is none - not even UVP on 12V!

With that, the Seasonic is totally disqualified to be thought about as it lacks protection, was designed before Haswell and Kepler, so not with any power Saving Mechanisms in mind....

But to be honest, I'd look at better PSU for example Silverstone Strider S (ST55F-GS), be quiet Pure Power 11 (600W)...

The thing to keep in mind:
For Vega you need two Cables if modular.

For a hard soldered one Cable works

And on lower end PSU I've tried it causes screeching. Though I could only test HEC made (LX500 and Master Watt 550W). And due to the Modular Panel, the MAster Watt 550W must only be used for testing purpose, not daily driver becuase there is a chance to kill the Connector.

It's outdated, look for something else like the CX and CXM lineup (grey label) from Corsair is usually priced the same but it's a better product.

Which one would be better if I buy a pc with an R5 1600 and a Vega 56 assuming that my CPU is overclocked and my GPU is undervolted.

If you are buying components like those I'm sure you could buy something like a Corsair RMx 550W  or 650W though. Don't cheap out on the PSU.

Hell no.

Rebates are kind of a bad deal in the first place, $60 for that junk is a rip off, you can get Formula Gold for similar money, or Whisper M for $20 more.

I'm looking to but the seasonic M12II 620w PSU for 40$ is it a good deal?

Why?!

WHy are you even considering that?!

Its electrical performance is even worse than other manufacturers Entry Level units like Cooler Master Master Watt Lite, Corsair VS.

And it lacks protection. Pretty much anything is not present. Including undervoltage on 12V...

So no, its not a good unit.

Any other mid/entry level unit from other manufacturers is superior or vastly superior to this late 2000s thing.

Didn't we tell you in a different Thread that the S12II/M12II is not suitable for a VEGA GPU?! WHy you stll thinking about it?!

The Wapanese Caps are just Lipstick on a Pig. This unit is not good!

You can get better stuff from other manufacturers!

Hell even a Cooler Master Master Watt would work - but screech loudly!

The MWE600W should be similar and vastly superior.

This thing might even kill your shit with a VEGA GPU inside!

ANd also: No Over Current detection/Protection!

If you short something out, happy burining!

STOP THINKING ABOUT THIS!

Oof.... imma yeet in with a hot take: don't buy the cheapest PSU possible for a very power hungry and pretty expensive GPU. That's like getting 2x2s for your porch cause 4x4s cost too much, it'll be a lot, lot more expensive when they bring down the entire thing.
