The point of this thread is to discuss whether or not we watch LTT's videos (and the reasons for why we do what we do), not to boycott Linus and LMG (to an extent).

@LinusTech keeps having to address this, about things that LMG does despite how much alternatives would make for the company. He steps in sometimes because people say "REEEEE SHILL" without understanding the dynamics of their content creation process. What exactly is Linus doing solely for the money? Certainly not the repurposing of Nvidia's mining cards via driver modifications, that was an interesting experiment that actually has a serious ramification on the budget gaming space. To claim that the mere fact that Linus has sponsors means that he's a shill and it ruins the quality of his content is taking very little into consideration at all.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

uhm... You do know the 30 seconds remark is supposed to be the time for you to use the app, not the time for the video, right?

I understand it to mean you can change the setting in 30 seconds or less. So both of you are incorrect. However the length of the video is not the determining factor.

I watch them frequently.  Some of the latest ones have been a little disappointing, but overall I do enjoy them.  Stragely I seem to enjoy some of the ones other people have been complaining about.  I enjoyed the recent TV review and installation videos.  I also enjoyed the fusion reactor video.  I was really bored with the "I dropped a CPU and tried to glue it.  Opps it didn't work." video.  I enjoy the WAN show best when they finally get around to talking about tech news.  I tend to enjoy Techquickie and Techlinked better then the main channel lately.

I wish there was another option.

An "occasionally" option.

I probably watch 10% of their videos, mainly the ones that aren't product reviews and actually involve something interesting being done with technology.

I'd say that the majority of LTT content now-a-day is advertisements. Period. And the videos that aren't advertisements are kinda boring a lot of the time. Chinese motherboard? Misled, ended up being boring. What we expected? 8th gen on z170. What we got? 7 gen on z370. The hacking nvidia driver videos? Those were interesting. Probably the only interesting videos of the last 20 or so. (Except for Tarren's video, that was cool, old school LTT right there, I actually bought something from that company because of that video.) 

 

Honestly, I didn't watch the "we've come a long way" video because I knew it was just going to be a positive spin on the shitty direction the channel is heading. (Pure tech advertisement.) We're getting fewer and fewer creative videos now, and I imagine eventually they'll cease all together. The advertisement and bashing videos make money, it's as simple as that. And they're relatively easy to make. Get product -> write script with what sponsor wants you to say -> throw in a criticizing comment or two -> read script while holding product.

 

A creative video.... on the other hand... requires much more. Get idea -> is idea possible? -> write script -> source components -> manage logistics (cameramen, transportation, etc) -> travel to site -> record in non ideal environments -> and after all that, it may not work. 

 

It makes business sense to do ads.

That flat out makes no sense.

 

First of all, a review is not an ad. Period. An ad will try to sell you a product. However, Linus will talk about the negatives of a product, an ad would only cover the positives.

 

But let's assume product review = ad, even though that's nonsense. Of the last dozen or so vids on the LTT channel, there's:

Nvidia drivers

Chinese motherboard

Keyboard macros

Bedroom Gaming

Xeon CPU fuckery

WAN show

Cleanest setup

Fastest Xbox

 

And like 4 product reviews. So we've got some informational stuff, projects, and tech experimentation. No glut of filler "ads" you claim plague the content.

 

You being bored by the motherboard video is your own fault, you're burned out on tech content from LTT, not the other way around, LTT having no ideas. It's also nonsense to equate the fact that their videos have ads with the idea that they ARE ads. The long and short of it is that Linus makes the kinds of videos HE wants, when HE wants to, and you've just grown out of it.

LTT videos to me are no longer what i came to the chanel for, seeing as i came for the very good build tutorials and overclocking and now its just "fun" and jake being annoying af

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

You're confusing "clickbait" with "sensationalist titles". "Apple Killed the Mac Mini" is a sensationalist title, in that it advertises the video's controversial conclusion to catch you interest - unlike the clickbait title, this one isn't a lie or misleading; it's just heavily opinionated and vague enough that, if you're interested in knowing why, you'll have to watch the video.

 

I too would prefer a boring "<Product X> Review <date> - LinusTechTips" or "Products <X and Y> Comparison <date> - LinusTechTips" but as I said, those are boring and only provide marginal additional value. If I'm interested in Linus' opinion on the new Macs, I'm going to watch that video anyway.

Who changes phones often enough that they need to watch phone case reviews? Phones be expensive as hell. I had to stick with Boost Mobile (ugh) to be able to afford the S8. Straight Talk wanted $80 a month for the same phone.

How often do you change your case tho xD and what information to that end do you get from an unboxing? I get the review part though, I wish they made more desktop hardware reviews (not just cases but motherboards, coolers and power supplies too) than they do now. I understand why those videos end up feeling all the same after a while, but they're an important resource.

I've subscribed to LTT back in Summer 2013 and have watched every video since.

In the early years of LTT, Linus was working for NCIX so it didn't matter how well or bad the channel did he would have still got a pay slip since he was still doing his job in the store. That sounds like you're disagreeing with their opinion more than criticising the title format... I think the mac mini in its current state is pure trash, should I be complaining that they didn't write that in the title?

Except it wasn't a test or a review, it was a failed attempt at fixing a chip he dropped. Again, how likely is that video to influence your purchase decision on a $10k CPU, to the point where you want the exact model number to make sure you're not getting the wrong one?

I mainly watch the As fast as possible videos and then the main LTT videos if the title interests me. I don't understand the clickbait rage as the videos usualy relate back to the title 90% of the time. The sleeper builds are getting repetitive to the point its the same hardware, different box. Wasn't a huge fan of the secret shopper series, scrapyard wars was kinda the same season to season. And REALLY not a fan of thier new news channel with riley, watched a hand full of videos and never looked back .. cant even name the channel I was so unimpressed. I'm slowly backing away from wan show, drifting more toward UFDTech Hot news instead .. wan show has become a live bro talk/catch up between luke and linus. Last few I've seen maybe 4-5 tech topics actually discussed on the show.

 

LTT videos while not super informative anymore, I watch them for rig ideas and to see what hardware can do with different ideas. Love the fact that he takes hardware and shows a balls to the wall idea and the (sometimes lol) relates it back to how an average user might be able to use it. ie virtualization for a gaming/nas box and then the 8 gamers 1 cpu, 6 work stations 1 cpu. 

 

Jayz2cents .. content consisted of "will my custom loop cool better with horse piss instead of water" and "today ill overclock the 2080ti's slightly faster than yesterday .. again." Also seems like he tries to tho his lambo in whenever possible. I get that he's a car guy, I myself am too (catch me on the wrangler and GM Preformance forums ;)) but he's trying to flex to hard.

 

For unboxings and reviews I stick with the HardwareCanucks and some Bitwit. Although these two can be too focused on how to make the rig appear supper highend and expensive for the cheapest.

 

And the gamers nexus .. holy balls the sleep factor. He's incredibly informative but some of the stuff is like, who besides board manufactures would need to know this?? and then the monotone voice. Case reviews and tech specs/comparisons are top notch tho! Especcialy when looking past more than just current and 1 maybe 2 generations older. Also comparing aircooling performance of a high end case that was beat by a low end case instead of only comparing in class.

 

edit: to be clear i voted yes i watch his videos but slowly leaning away. Main things I watch for tech is UFD Hot News, Tech Quickie, HardwareCanucks case unboxings, GN reviews (for the specs then shut off for the board design lol) and LTT main videos unless the title sounds repetitive.

Who changes phones often enough that they need to watch phone case reviews? Phones be expensive as hell. I had to stick with Boost Mobile (ugh) to be able to afford the S8. Straight Talk wanted $80 a month for the same phone.

I do miss the unboxings and in depth review videos, I watch GamersNexus,BitWit,Paul's Hardware, and HardwareCanucks for case and hardware reviews.

But how often do most people need to change their computer case? Unless you sell your whole PC when you're building a new one,are a PC system builder, or have to buy the latest thing with RGB, i think a computer case can last a while.
