For a NAS? Save some money and find a used 3rd generation or even a 2nd generation. Unless you're planning to have this thing transcode on the fly. Check out refurbished systems and see if you can find a decent i5 or even an i7.

I know that's not how it works. That's just the reason he gave.

Also, just to edit, a VPN in some cases can (operative word here--DPI can be a counteracting measure your ISP can use) help you get around your ISP throttling your network connection, especially high bandwidth things like Twitch, YouTube, and Netflix. You are right in that it won't get him around data caps and overage charges.

Mr_Flynn got a reaction from leadeater in Building a NAS, need a bit of advice
If you're planning to use FreeNAS, don't use hardware RAID (freenas won't be able to properly check and prevent corruption on the disks). Put the drives into a RAID-Z or RAID-Z2 pool through Freenas. These modes are like RAID 5 and 6 respectively, but with a far better anti-corruption feature set.

That or Veeam Endpoint Backup Free, Crash Plan (Free for local/offsite). There's actually tons of free and paid options, main difference is do you require a support agreement or not so if yes go paid.

Twitch is also notoriously bad at sending notification emails. Sometimes it's on time and other times its not. With a stream like the WAN Show (which has a ~roughly~ set schedule), I just open the stream at 4:30 and keep the tab in the background so I can hear when it starts.

For now there are really only three earbuds that fit that category, and the other two aren't very good (IconX and the Dash). Remains to be seen how good Apple's are. IMO, unless they manage to get around some of the major technological issues around clarity vs battery life, they're probably not going to be much better than the competition. Not to mention the fit and comfort of Apple earbuds leaves a lot to be desired.

For me its not necessarily the fact that they removed the headphone jack, but the fact that they removed it and stuck with a PROPRIETARY CONNECTOR. If it was usb c, it would be FAR better, but then again this is apple we are talking about and no chance in hell they will ever use a standard connector on their phone.

Let's also not forget they got away with this before, once they changed how the ad revenue was calculated. Remember that whole ordeal about animators getting screwed over by the big change in how adsense worked? It was no longer based on raw views, but video length, upload frequency and what not?

That never changed, even when the biggest animators threatened to quit. A lot of them actually switched to different content entirely, going from animation to gaming, podcasts, tutorials, etc because it was the only way to continue to make money. Those that adapt, survive.

Nobody is going to boycott youtube on a large scale. Nobody is going to compete on this scale. Sure, there is Facebook and Twitch, but their terms are not any better (and will likely suffer the same fate eventually). Anyone that staked their livelyhood on youtube ad revenue alone, made a huge mistake. The smart ones used the platform to form businesses and to turn themselves into a brand. LTT did this. Plenty of others did this. Selling merchandise, music, illegal CS:Go gambling sites,  even appearances at events for money. For most of the biggest channels, the ad revenue itself is actually only a small fraction of the income. They will likely remain unaffected by this change. The ones that are affected on a large scale, should have played the game a little better. Nothing stays the same forever.

Remind me who had a meltdown and took the forums offline? Oh yes, it was Logan. The situation was "handled" like this because it actually wasn't handled at all. This ugly drama was just a coming to a head, or a culmination if you will, of apparently protracted mismanagement and miscommunication. The best way to handle the situation would have been to deal with things before they got this bad in the first place.

Mr_Flynn reacted to VSG in Youtube is censoring Youtubers.
No, it is not censorship. YouTube is not stopping them from continuing to upload videos, and use the website as a platform for sharing/preserving their content. Monetization is a completely different aspect. You could argue that is lowering their incentive to upload videos, but not censoring them.

I'm aware. But this is Youtube saying, "Our advertisers do not want to buy ad space on this type of content, and/or we think it might harm our business relationships to try to sell it."

By the way, your freedom of speech comes from (depending on your personal philosophy) either your government or your god. Google does not provide nor do they have any responsibility to protect your freedom of speech. Youtube is not a public forum, and your freedom of speech is subject to their terms of service. As long as Google/Youtube is abiding by a clear, consistent set of rules (the ones you keep posting, I assume), they are perfectly within their rights to decide what types of content can be monetized.

Not if it doesn't hurt their bottom line in any meaningful way. The reality is that every time YouTube changes something (often for the wrong reasons), there's an outcry and then nothing happens. Let's take the Google+ comment integration. People were up in arms about that, but Google never really changed that. There claims about a mass exodus and a bunch of other apocalyptic stuff would occur and Google would be forced to make changes. It didn't happen then and I'll bet it won't happen now.

YouTube is first and foremost a business, let's not dither that fact.

iOS has limitations on these kinds of apps. For example, iOS doesn't expose an API for apps to respond to iMessage or SMS messages from other apps. iOS also limits what information from notifications other apps can read. These are both headline features of the app. They could probably implement the other features, though.

And Windows Phone is a pretty small percentage of the market. They're more likely to tackle the iOS problem first.

I think the problem is that for many years, cables were just wires that connects one end to another without anything fancy. But now time has changed, so cable manufcatures need to get the tool and knowledge to know how to properly make a cable. That is my guess.

Mr_Flynn reacted to Zyndo in Colour coordination
That should look totally fine. Your heatsink is going to stick out like a big silver sore thumb though. Granted its a neutral colour so you would probably be fine, but you may want to consider something a little more black or red in order to fit your theme a tad better. Below are a few links to some that I think would work better aesthetically. Some are really pricey, some not so much. Investing in a better cooler will also allow you to overclock harder/quieter, so don't think that you're just paying for the aesthetic if you have to shell out a few extra bucks. You're going to get your moneys worth (probably).

I recommend the H5 Ultimate for its price, performance, and compatibility whilst still largely adhering to your aesthetic. Some of the others are a bit more expensive, but may fit better aesthetically. Keep in mind there are a whole slough of AIO's that come with LED's that you could match to your system if you wanted as well. ALSO! be sure to check that these have the clearance to actually fit in your chosen case. Some of them are quite large and may not quite fit with the side panel installed.

i agree with your points on the logan doing cocaine rumor and people's attacks on pistol. but i do think donors have a right to know that their money is being used for the rights things. if people were buying stuff on their store or something yes they dont have to tell us what that money is being used for but donations are another thing. as an thought experiment if they opened up a charity saying they will give clothes to kids in africa. they better be giving clothes to kids in africa and not using it themselves and it is part of our business to know and keep them accountable.

Psh, who cares about Infiniband. Just go with a Nexus 9508 with 8x N9K-X9732C-EX linecards to give you 256x 100Gb ports, of course it would cost at least an extra 0 on the end of that number but still, you get all the bragging rights

I've been part of their community for a while (the funny thing is that this incident caused me to become more active which is pretty crap timing), and it kinda sucks but I saw this coming from a mile away. When Logan moved away from Kentucky I noticed that they both (Wendell and Logan) have slipped on keeping their promises with content (and this is mainly Logan's problem). A lot of stuff wasn't produced or mothballed. I can forgive Wendell because he runs a business, but Logan doesn't really have much of an excuse here.

After reading both responses, I noticed that Logan's response said a lot without actually saying anything (i.e. there was not real substance to it). Wendell was actually able to back up his side of the story. Additionally, the things that Qain have said seem to corroborate Wendell's claims. For now I am in the Wendell & Qain camp, but I still want to hear what Logan will continue to say and show as time goes on. It's important to have both sides of the story here.
