To be fair, the Microsoft Arc Mouse is already ~30% flexible. This is probably an "Arc 2" and a natural evolution.

SpaceOctopus reacted to da na in Running Leaked Windows 11 Build, Can't Upgrade To latest Version
The leaked build is technically pirated, and pirated software we are not allowed to help with according to the community standards. I recommend just doing a full clean install of the insider build.

For every one miner who is slightly inconvenienced by this "false positive" how many other users are benefitted? I would guess a lot. It's not hard to add an exception to Windows Defender, or to disable it all together.

    I'm fine with this.

SpaceOctopus reacted to Kisai in A new version of windows is coming!!!
People aren't lazy, they just resist change for one, and aren't willing to put up with the non-existent support in Open Source software. At least if you pay for product, there is some expectation of support and warranty. Free software and Open Source software, the refrain is "if you don't like it, fix it yourself"

There is no point bringing up the argument "just use Linux", when there isn't a single tinker-free version of Linux. OS X is tinker-free because the OS and Hardware work out of the box. That's why OS X is preferred over Windows. People only stick to Windows because OS X isn't available for commodity Wintel hardware, and to hack OSX to support non-mac hardware is as much of a pain in the behind as Linux is always.

I can pretty much assure you that if Apple released an entire version of OSX that worked out of the box on any Windows device, people would drop Windows like a hot potato as long as they can still run Photoshop and Word on it. The reality is that is not Apple's business model, and Apple has not sold a computer since the PPC that Windows users would actually want to use if they could not justify a Mac Pro, as everything that isn't a Mac Pro is not upgradable or underpowered relative to what they can get on a desktop WinTel machine.

I'm sure they have some way of serializing each component and registering them with the SoC in the factory. It's sort of like Error 53 debacle with Touch ID a few years back.

SpaceOctopus reacted to Trik'Stari in Corsair to go public
This is called Shareholder Primacy, it is the single biggest problem facing the stock market, and in my opinion society as a whole, in todays world.

It's the thing that, in my opinion, forces companies to make stupid decisions when you consider long term business plans, and forces CEO's to behave like psychopaths, or more likely the reason that so many psychopaths end up as CEO's. It is the reason that making $6,000,000,000,000 in profit in a year is considered bad, because they made $7,000,000,000,000 last year.

There needs to be an alternative. Something that balances keeping the good of shareholders in mind as well as the overall long term good of a company and society as well.

Sorry for the mini rant. I see this problem and seemingly no one else ever talks about it.

SpaceOctopus reacted to AlTech in Corsair to go public
I simultaneously really dislike companies going public, moreso tech and gaming companies, but also think it's kinda cool to own parts of companies.

The problem I find is that usually it causes companies to disregard consumer opinions and causes the company to please shareholders at the expense of paying customers.

I sense a class-action lawsuit... Also, students could just install the app on a burner phone ( @Arika S ), leaving it running 24/7 within the boundaries of the school. Still wrong to force the students to go through such measures, but, it is an option until the University realizes it will be facing some serious legal action.

I will never ever buy a phone or any device that doesnt have a headphone jack. USB C headphones and earbuds are not a replacement,
They will keep making shitty thin and light phones and laptops with only USB C and thunderbolt that have 30 minutes of battery life. And I will sit here with my lineage OS Moto G7 Power that lasts 3 days, and my gen 1 i5 laptop that has firewire and a modded battery, and laugh at people wasting their money on locked down, less robust garbage.

Edit: My wording here was a bit strong, I dont actually care if you buy newer hardware, whatever makes you happy.

    Summary
Scammers used images and video of Wozniak to convince YouTube users that he was hosting a live giveaway and anyone who sent him bitcoins will get double the number back.

The lawsuit claims that YouTube has been “unresponsive” to Wozniak’s repeated requests to take down the fraudulent videos, he said.

    My thoughts
I’m glad Wozniak is suing YouTube even though it isn't really his responsibility. YouTube’s behavior is similar to some of their peers like Facebook and eBay who couldn’t care less about what happens on their platform so long as they make money off it. The whole “YouTube isn’t a publisher” argument doesn’t hold when the platform refuses to takedown scams that are reported to them.

SpaceOctopus reacted to Mad153 in PIA and their "advertising"
Sorry if this has been posted before or if I'm in the wrong subsection.

Ltt has had a PIA sponsorship for years now, and they've been trying (imo) to mislead the public. The thing that really annoyed me, in today's techlinked, is this:

    Two things annoyed me here:
First, the visible search term. It's almost impossible to go to a modern day search engine and get a result via http. If you manually change the URL, it sends you back to the encrypted version. There is no way, unless you get out of your way to do so,  to send a search query using http.

Sure, if you are using IE 6 or something ridiculous, you may be able to. But VPNs are just a tunnel, and at the end of the tunnel, your data leaves to the rest of the internet, unencrypted.

Secondly, the Gmail part of the "unencrypted" version. Unless the worry here is your school or work or ISP etc seeing that you are using Gmail, for some reason, this seems to also be misleading.

(And before you say what about places such as China, if they are watching from China, they first already have a VPN and secondly know that having a paid VPN is illegal there.)

This is because, since 2014, there has been no way to receive, view or send emails with Gmail over http.

I don't think scaring people is a good way to go about business at all, especially as they run these ads towards less tech savvy people too on their website.
