themaniac reacted to rcmaehl in If you can't beat 'em, buy em - Intel starts talks to acquire AMD despite monopoly concerns
Source:
CNBC (quote source)
Tom's Hardware
Summary:
Intel has started talks for acquiring AMD, despite previous concerns about a PC processor monopoly. Intel points to Samsung, Apple, and ARM as potential competitors in the processor space.
Quotes/Excerpts:
My Thoughts:
I doubt this will happen, while I believe ARM, Apple, and Samsung are well off as chip makers, breaking into the Desktop market will be a significant challenge for all companies. I could see maybe if Intel only buys a specific market of AMD, such as their GPU division, Server Division, or another part of the company, but above all else, I don't think this'll happen because this is an April Fools post.

themaniac reacted to GoodBytes in Welcome to *new* Edge web browser. Chromium based Edge being rolled out to all.
The biggest issue with the old Edge, is that it had a lot of trouble keeping up the paste with web changes, while catching up in terms of web technologies but also interface, and optimizations for the given resources at the team disposal. It was just too much for them to handle. And the, for what I can only assume, architectural error, which continued to have the web browser tied to the OS, even thaugh it was not their intention since day 1, to deliver faster updates really all piled up to them not ending up with a good overall web browser despite certain qualities and strength it had over the others.
So the current direction of taking Chromium and making a Microsoft version of it with its own unique feature set, is perhaps the the best for them, and for us, users.
Already they pushed smoother scrolling on Chromium which is nice, people reported that Microsoft implementation of service replacement from Google to be superior in terms of optimizations (consumes lower memory and CPU, but I that is what is claimed, I have not compared, so take it as a grain of salt). It is already some good signs. We also see an organized and easy to navigate Settings panel, Fluent Design element appearing, making websites as apps with PWA support if teh sites uses the APIs. So it seems that so far, the web browser is evolving much quicker then with Edge, and they do front and back end with much ease compared to before.
Seeing that Collections is coming, I suspect that plans to bring all old Edge features to the new one is definitely in the works.

I for one welcome our $800+ console overlord
I for one would rather welcome a $500 console overlord instead though

$800 would be extremely steep, I really hope they release it at cost and make money off games like they used to do. Otherwise this thing and game for support for would be extremely lackluster.

themaniac reacted to PlayStation 2 in WTF is nest? a rant about americentrism in tech and internet in general
Huh? Is your rant essentially complaining that American homes almost always have air conditioning and us using the Imperial system means that we’re backwards?
Our houses usually have air conditioning because it’s a highly wanted feature here that also isn’t too expensive to fit into a house permanently. It’s kind of a necessity here more than most places because the temperatures in many places can wildly vary. Smart thermometers that connect to the internet, however, are rather pointless.
Also, because it tremendously bothers me, but why does everyone complain when American videos use the Imperial system but Americans don’t complain about the Metric system? Is it because we aren’t arrogant and understand that countries are different, unlike the rest of the world?
