COTG reacted to Sauron in The Restrict Act, Supposedly To Ban Tik Tok, Will (probably) NOT Put You In Jail For Using a VPN. It mentions even VERY Futuristic technologies.
The Chinese government doesn't own TikTok, and yes, the US absolutely does have a say in how Instagram operates. It can demand disclosure of user data and force them to remove illegal content. Further, facebook has been known to just sell user data to the highest bidder, meaning the Chinese government also has access to their data if they want it. Remember Cambridge Analitica?
That's a valid concern for a user to have but not grounds for a national ban. As a sanctions package it would make sense but that's not what this is.
Yeah, but the services where the tide pod challenge was popularized are not being targeted by this law.
Forget the tide pod challenge, you can go on 4chan and find instructions on how to build a pipe bomb. The idea that tiktok is dangerous in a way that 4chan isn't is absurd.
I agree that that's a problem, my question is: why does tiktok get banned for it but not twitter? You seem to agree they're comparably bad in this regard...
I'm not sure how this is related but... would you extend it to manual photo edits? What about automatic app filters...?
So again, why a federal ban on some specific apps?

COTG reacted to Sauron in Microsoft lays off an ethical AI team as it doubles down on OpenAI
don't you think this makes the title a bit misleading or at least missing important context?
This sounds like pure speculation. Also given these were microsoft employees and not regulators they could just be ignored if microsoft didn't want to follow some of their advice.

Also honestly I can't help but think these "AI ethics" teams mainly exist as publicity stunts for corporations trying to avoid regulation... "AI" is such a broad term and field that the idea that a handful of people would be generally qualified to determine ethical development across all of them sounds absurd.

I wonder how many people will stop reading after the headline and not look more into the situation.

I see at least one person in this thread who already did.

Because why provide nuance and understanding when you can write a headline that gets people mad.

COTG reacted to TetraSky in Tesla locked a customer's car out of 1/3 of its battery capacity for a $4.5k ransom
Again with the anti-consumer mentality of car companies.
I get it, it should've been "locked down" to 60 from the start... But remotely taking it away when they have been made aware of it is such a shit move for them to do.
I seriously hate these software locked features when the damn thing is already built in the car... While I get that it's easier for them to basically just make one model and lock down features to create more SKUs, it's still shit move. Especially in this case when the user had access to it and they suddenly decided to take it away without warnings.

COTG reacted to BobVonBob in VPN Providers in India to be mandated to store user data for upto 5 years
Understatement of the century. Modern governments feel the need to know everything everyone is doing at all times, privacy be damned, citizens' safety in the inevitable data breach be damned. One would hope politicians will have to face the music, but basically all of them are shielded from consequence by the corporations and billionaires they're in the pockets of.

Agree to disagree on that. This group went far beyond "script kiddie" levels, they penetrated Nvidia, Samsung, Microsoft and others to the point of dumping terrabytes of data.

LulzSec and Lizard Squad were a bunch of script kiddies, running DDoS attacks from hired botnets to take down services etc etc.

COTG reacted to porina in [rumor] nvidia is reducing shipments on purpose this holiday season to keep the street prices high.
Not the tin foil hat rubbish again. He's been spouting that for a while, which is ignorance at best, malicious at worst.

If we assume for now that a new product range is being made ready, it is normal to cut back production of the outgoing product to shift resource to the new product. It does not mean a drop in production overall. Now, if they want more launch day stock, then it would imply not supplying the older product a bit earlier to stock up on the new product.

We could further speculate that nvidia might do a product refresh timed to match Intel's Arc launch. It feels a little short for a 40 series, and a little late for a Super refresh though.

I'd further guess this might only apply to certain models, and not across the whole range.

COTG reacted to BuckGup in China declares all crypto-currency transactions illegal
Don't be silly now. Drugs are illegal as well as murder and they are extremely controlled by the government yet you can find a surplus of drugs anywhere and people get murdered everyday. Just because something is labeled illegal doesn't make it vanish into a void. Nor does it impact the decentralization aspect. You say it's an illusion but that's simply not true. The reason it's decentralized is the actual mechanics of how it works. China can't shut down the blockchain nor can they trace crypto transaction to individuals, assuming they use proper security, so in short this does nothing but make it harder to use crypto in china and has no impact on the decentralized nature of it.

COTG reacted to BuckGup in China declares all crypto-currency transactions illegal
No they won't that's why decentralization is so good. Based upon what happened before with the mining ban the only people who get screwed over are chinese citizens. If anything this just makes crypto much much more lucrative for everyone else. It's also a great testament to show how big of a threat it is to central banking. This is all a win, buy the dip, wait 8 years and you'll be a multi-millionaire.

"If you have nothing to hide then you have nothing to fear." The usual argument for this kind of BS.

ah yes, because there has never been a false positive in any AI detection or algorithmic process.

it's the classic "think of the children" excuse.
any other company would be crucified on the spot for using anything as a justification to scan through your devices and photos, so Apple should too.

COTG reacted to Chris Pratt in Apple is (going to) scan your Apple devices
This seems both pointless and also just cover for scanning your data in the first place. If you tell child abusers that your going to scan their phones and that of their children for signs of abuse, then it's very easy to then just not buy an iPhone for you or your child. I guess it's a good way to just get sickos to leave your platform, but something tells me Apple is going to use the data they gleam for other purposes and just want to make it sound like it's all altruistic.

COTG reacted to dizmo in iPhone 14 Pro Models to Feature Tough Titanium Alloy Chassis
Just because they are using a premium material that's resource intensive doesn't change the fact that not including the charger reduces some kind of "waste." That's a ridiculous stance to take. Also, they've been on a quest to get rid of all ports for ages, long before they said that it was better for the environment.

I doubt Ti will be used in all models, and it'll either only be on the Pro ones, or they'll have an option to choose titanium just like you can choose a titanium watch. That'd actually be pretty cool; having an iPhone customizer just like the watch one.

COTG reacted to Eigenvektor in Did you think the chip shortages were getting better? Think again. Intel confirms WCCF rumour that the entire industry is running out of substrates.
I think you answered your own question. Server stuff has a better margin and they are more likely to accept a price hike, so it makes sense to prioritize these customers.

If you lose the business of a few individual consumers, who cares, they'll come back eventually. If you lose business customers who order a large amount of hardware each year, it's a different story.

I wouldn't be so sure. Crypto is in a bit of a crab market right now, but it won't be forever.

This has more to do with China, than Crypto. A lot of Chinese individuals will be in the process of moving their rigs to other countries, and in time we will see BTC climb once again.
