KCmetro got a reaction from Gyre-Taenn in "Troubled" development of Star Citizen?
It's funny that you go through the trouble to analyze and dissect what I said. I'm not even going to bother reading it. It's not that big of a deal. The pre-release version of the game is great, I'm sure that it'll be great when it is officially released. I will say this, again: I'm reflecting on discussions from others; I am optimistic, while also being realistic; I will remain hopeful that SC will end up being a huge success. I suggest that you move on, ignore this thread or even ignore me if you wish.

Might not want to spend that much on the OS.

I put USD$500 (approx.) into a Toshiba laptop and it worked well for similar purposes.

They don't really compare since they're not really measured in a consistent way.

KCmetro got a reaction from Hydraxiler32 in Tech gifts for under 100 quid?
Good idea, except people can be picky about those items. If it's possible to find out what they like without giving it away, that'd be perfect.

KCmetro got a reaction from NumLock21 in Anybody a guru at motherboard-based RAID?
The OS is not on those drives.
M2 SSD = windows drive
SATA SSD = linux drive
HDDx2 (RAID1) = storage

KCmetro got a reaction from NumLock21 in Anybody a guru at motherboard-based RAID?
It looks like that Intel PDF jumps right into setting raid in bios then configuring raid with mdadm, aka motherboard raid and software raid. It also mentions checking mobo-level status of the raid by using mdadm with the -–detail-platform option.
It looks like I use the /dev/md126 along with mdadm, or do you mean jumping right in with the next step of filesystem creation? I'm also going to use LVM.
You seem to take personal offense to the notion of anybody even considering using motherboard raid. Bad experience with it?

KCmetro got a reaction from Sintezza in New computer, Ubuntu, recommended things to install?
I have a completely separate drive for windows 10, completely separate drive for linux, completely separate drives for storage. ...windows for gaming only.

It wasn't cpu_opt... had to move memory from 2 4 to 1 3.

KCmetro got a reaction from XenosTech in CPU cooler backplate & standoffs snug, but wiggle room with mobo
I don't have the thermal paste on hand, will have to go get some if I have to redo this, so am just trying to avoid that. The o-rings ended up working, no more wiggle.

KCmetro got a reaction from ARikozuM in CPU cooler backplate & standoffs snug, but wiggle room with mobo
Picked up some rubber washers matching those mentioned here and with some slightly bigger/smaller, etc. ...hopefully that will securely fasten the backplate to the motherboard.

Or go in the BIOS and turn off the switch from working (usually, you have that option).

KCmetro got a reaction from DaBeggad in Hello, world!
So I decided to build a new computer with the #1 motivator being Star Citizen.
I haven't played it yet, have only watched the videos about it.
Found out about it through Reddit, someone mentioned how it'd be cool to have a puddle jumper (from Stargate) in it.
So I decided to look it up, and was really impressed.
So, here's what I have, I just bought the parts this week:

I haven't built the computer yet, am still deciding how to divvy up the space on it (512GB SSD & 3TB HDD). I'll use Windows only for gaming, and Linux for everything else (including a host server for virtualization with about a dozen VMs/instances as a self-contained IaaS; will also run Plex). Not sure how to partition things out for both OS types on the SSD & HDD arrangement.
Anyway, I just found out this site has a Star Citizen forum, pretty cool.

Also a DW fan... 10's my fav, although also like 11, and 9, each on their own ways... like 12 too but he doesn't really have good chemistry with his companions, although he has so much potential I just see him more as a powerhouse loner of a doctor.
...but... I'm way more of a Stargate fan. The original movie, all 3 TV shows plus their movies.
Still, love Doctor Who.

Okay... your suggestion of RAID 1... I'm going back to that again...
...maybe I'll do 2x3TB WD Red HDDs RAID 1.

KCmetro got a reaction from Dash Lambda in Screw it!
Different brands, I'm guessing more expensive = better quality; less expensive = lower quality; regardless of brand.
Is that one of DW's sonic screwdrivers?
I might do that instead of a fancy one. Given my track record of losing them, I'd hate to drop more money on one just to lose it.

KCmetro got a reaction from Wolther in Next phase: putting it all together
At first I thought, "hey this goes in a laptop," then, "well, why not a desktop also?" ...then... "wait a sec, the motherboard does have a slot for this, right?" And... it does. I just need to make sure to plug the SSD into the right slot.
