New computer, Ubuntu, recommended things to install?

Starting fresh with a new computer. It's technically Ubuntu Server, although I am going to also use it as a normal workstation. Any suggestions for applications to install on it?

Doesn't Ubuntu Server not come with a GUI? You might want to install one of those, unless you really like the terminal :)

I don't think so. I installed ubuntu server and it just booted into the command line. I've decided to install fluxbox, keep things as light as possible, only add what I need a I need it. And yep, I like vim, I use vi all the time. :)

I keep intending to learn all the shortcuts for shit like "delete the 4th line beginning at the 12th character" but I never seem to find the time (dd is generally all I really need every day :))

Yeah I use maybe half of those on that cheat sheet, but only about a quarter of them on a regular basis.

You still can simply just install regular chrome eventually.

Since they are deb packages anyways.

Some people mainly need chrome for netflix.

Anyways other handy tools.

- media codecs.

- kodi media center

- Skype

- Kden live.

- vlc.

- pdf document viewer. (there are diffrent good ones)

- kazam, simple screen recorder or OBS?.

- bleechbit

- gimp.

- wine + wine tricks.

- Play on Linux.

- Better Audio player of choice.

- ClamAV
- Spotify.

- Torrent client like Transmission or Deluge.

- IRC Client like Hexchat or Quassel.

- Terminator terminal.

- email client of choice, like Thunderbird, or Kmail.

- Burn programm´s.

- Discord.

- Mumble.

- Steam.

- GuFW simple firewall.

- Gparted.

- dropbox.

Basicly whatever you need.

I actually have never used steam (I know I know lol) but I built this box largely for use with gaming, have been wanting to get back into it. The Windows side will most likely have Steam. I'm using the Linux side for everything else, but if there's gaming too that's probably okay. I don't care either way, but the windows side will definitely be all gaming (exclusively).

Haha na i am allot active on the Level1techs community.

So yeah i´m probably a bit infected with the Linux virus.

Since there are allot of geeks there.

I like to play arround with Linux allot, allthough i still have not found the perfect distro for myself to replace my main OS.

But my next main OS will definitely be a Linux distro.

Because noooo way, no chance in life that any part of Windows10 is getting onto my machine. :P

Only in KVM maybe.

I have a completely separate drive for windows 10, completely separate drive for linux, completely separate drives for storage. ...windows for gaming only.

Thats totally fine basicly.

Works pretty well, i think that allot of users doing it that way.

Because there are still certain applications on which there are no direct open source replacements for.

And gaming on Linux is slowly starting to get there, but its not fully there yet.

But i expect if Vulkan is going to be a succes, and widley adopted by game developers.

Then Gaming on Linux has a very bright future.

You can of course also go totally Linux and run Windows10 in a KVM container.

However you need some pretty decent hardware for that.

the day that linux = 100% gaming platform in addition to all the other amazing things that ya can do w/ it, will be the day that microsoft loses a lot of customers.
