silverjay928 reacted to Statik in Can we make a standard for Build Questions?
So I personally really enjoy looking at people planned builds.and helping them plan a build that's perfect for them, but it gives me an aneurysm with how many posts are like:

    - "Hi I'm building a PC recommend me something good"
    - "Recommend me a good gaming pc big budget/budget flexible/low budget"
    The list goes on.

Can a mod or someone making a stickied post or something with a template/format that you have to follow when asking for advice? I.e.

Location (and do you have access to microcenter):

Budget (use actual #, in what currency, and how flexible):

What is your PC used for? Give details (i.e. what types of games if gaming, or what type of programs you will be running)

    Will you be overclocking?

Do you need peripherals (i.e. Monitor, Keyboard/Mouse, Headset, etc), or just the tower?

Do you have any style preference, gear preference, or a size preference (i.e. Mini ITX, ATX, etc.).

    Any other details?

Hey guys just put together this little PC it's a Dell optiplex 380 with Intel core 2 E7500 2.93GHz, 4gb ram, Rx 460 2gb from Gigabyte total cost was $100 USD
The PC was $40 and the GPU was $60 I will be back with an edit if benchmarks and when I change cases. This is only a rig to hold me up in very minimal 1080p or med high 720p games non AAA titles. Not expecting much but we will see

I always recommend going with a new rig, mainly because there's little value in prolonging an aging PC. A new rig will enable you both to play virtually any game you desire. The reason I say this is because I don't see the point in spending like $500 now and then having to spill another huge amount on a new machine, you might as well get that new machine now.

Well the only things you will be able to keep are the drives and probably case. The PSU I won't guess on. In my opinion you're gonna be throwing away money with buying components that old and or weak and I would encourage you to decide a budget. Then see what you can build within that budget. From there see what you can reasonably expect in performance from that build. That is the order of steps I would take when trying to decide. If your budget can't build a PC that will satisfy your wants then decide to wait and save or buy used components for your current build.

Well the i5 because games won't use multiple cores so the hyperthreading will be useless as far as you'll be conserned.

As far as the PSU, witness:

silverjay928 got a reaction from jjohnthedon1 in too overkill computer rig ??
yeah go for something like a 3570k or 6500 and 16 gigs of ram. an i7 for just gaming is a little overkill unless you stream and make videos and edit  for YouTube as well and what Graphics card are you using?

silverjay928 reacted to r4tch3t in is i5 4570 still a good CPU for gaming?
No need to update yet, I have a 3570k and haven't even needed to overclock yet. Paired with 16GB 1600KHz ddr3, and a 1070 running 1440p.

silverjay928 reacted to D2ultima in I need a new system- pls help!
Sounds like you want a GT73VR then. Single 1070 and 6820HK is the balance you desire. I hear it has a MUX switch so when you want battery life you can reboot into iGPU-only mode and use that.

If you can live with your current performance, then I'd wait for Kaby and Zen, which should shake up the market.

Just keep in mind that you'll have to upgrade to DDR4 RAM in addition to your mobo.

An upgrade to the i5 4690K or i5 6600K will yield marginal performance gains. I'd say upgrade to the i7 (and you won't need to change out the motherboard and RAM either).

i was going to use "future proof" to describe my power supply but the sound of the word made me gag but thanks i think ill go for the 480 in a 8gb variant because im lloking around and alot of people are want their  sell 290s or 390s for $200 so ill just throw in the extra 60 to 80 and get a brand new card.

silverjay928 got a reaction from Hydraxiler32 in How loud is the stock CPU cooler
pretty quiet actually my brothers rig has a  6100  with the stock cooler and it runs nice and quiet very cool as well, no need for aftermarket on a locked cpu like the 6500.

    This is a complete lie.

A 290X is roughly twice as fast as R9 270. (2816 SPs vs 1280 SPs)

RX 480 8GB would also be a good option!

Don't listen to these guys, a 290 is a big upgrade. Literally twice the hardware resources across the board, only thing keeping it short of double the performance is that clocks are somewhat lower.

silverjay928 reacted to SLAYR in cpu and ram for Game Developement?
There aren't too many game devs on here, but unreal engine 4, and the cryengine may need more gpu power then what a 270x can provide especially if you want to run the finished games at the max settings they can go.

With ram, I would say try 16gb, and if you start hitting close to 100% usage then upgrade.

    1) Unity 3D is very limited software... the best games made on it are Pokemon Go and maybe The Forest.

    2) Unity 3D is good for beginners as it is easy to learn.

    3) There are better option (like Unreal Engine 4) that you could use if your pc is up to the spec needed.

    4) 1 person should be enough to make a game but a small group would help you alot :3

    Thats what i think

if your work requires heavy 3D, virtual or LOTS of videos rendering then X99 is the way but if gaming is the majority then Z170, X99 is for more SLI/Crossfire/PCI lanes

silverjay928 reacted to Cyracus in 6600k worth it?
If you get the 6600k and still want to upgrade later to an i7 Kaby Lake will use the same cpu socket so it will be as simple as pulling the 6600k out and placing the 7700k in, and of course then you could still hand your 6600k down

Zen is going to be hella expensive when it comes out, its the first big major "update" to AMDs CPU lineup. You can bet myself along with countless others will be buying just to benchmark them.
