Why Z170 over X99

I was wandering....... I want to build a gaming/work pc but i saw if i get the z170 motherboard with a i7-6700k is decent, but its the best CPU in its lineup i was wondering is it worth upgrading to the X99 platform and get a i7-6800k with two extra cores for about 150$. (btw i would have to reduce the amount of money i want to spend on my GPU to get a better CPU) and thanks for the input all is appreciated.

Nah I think keep the 6700K and get something like a 1070 or 1080.

If you main focus is work, then MAYBE (it depends on the types of app you'll run). If you main focus is gaming, however, then the 6700k will do better than the 6800k.

if your work requires heavy 3D, virtual or LOTS of videos rendering then X99 is the way but if gaming is the majority then Z170, X99 is for more SLI/Crossfire/PCI lanes

X99 is more workstation/server oriented, whereas Z170 is more consumer oriented.

Could you be a bit more specific on what exactly you'll be doing?

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

I would be doing lots of gaming oriented things and the usual programs like exel, word, powerpoint, ect basically school work.

I'd definitely just stick with Z170 and an i7 6700k then.

6700k is far better choice then.
