Due to issues they've inadvertently caused for customers in the past, Microsoft has become more conservative with the roll-out of updates, holding them back until they are reasonably sure they won't cause issues, as a courtesy to the user.  If you want to manually force it, you can always do so using the update tool, but it's generally recommended that you wait for them to offer it so that the chance of issues is minimized.

Hmm, I guess they've changed this since last I used it.  That is unfortunate, if you can't use this tool to force the update there's literally no reason for it to exist.

In the mean time, if you really want to get it, you could download an installer and do a fresh install, but that is a bit drastic

I see.  A terrible name then, as it's not links that are the issue, but copying/embedding the information, leading to not need to use a link.  Not that this should be taken as support for the idea, but that does make a lot more sense.

I think that it's not enough to just have really bad ideas simply not talked about or looked-at. The policies and values which preclude their entry into society need to exist so that they can't keep returning until some government that's unscrupulous enough finally passes them.

vanished got a reaction from Newblesse Obblige in Can you notice the difference in speed of 2.5 inch HDD to its 3.5 inch counterpart?
How much you notice will depend on what you're doing.  If you just need a file every now and then, or you use it as a backup drive and don't worry about how long it takes to read or write, you'll be fine, but if you are someone who steps through full-screen views of large image files on a regular basis, that's something that I'd imagine would be helped by more speed.  I can't promise this though since I haven't done extensive testing in this context.  I know that moving from poor (<10 MB/s) wifi to gigabit ethernet (~115 MB/s) definitely helps, but how much of a difference you'd see going from a laptop drive to a desktop one I can't say.  At some point there will be other bottlenecks holding you back, like CPUs power to downscale and prepare the preview, etc.

As far as I'm concerned UPnP is itself a vulnerability and should be kept disabled at the router level, so this doesn't concern me.  I'd recommend anyone interested follow a similar protocol, especially with this new news.  For everyone else who doesn't keep up with tech and runs everything with default settings, this will unfortunately only add to the long list of security issues with IoT devices.

They are generally slower yes and not only because of the RPM difference, and in fact, probably not even because of that.  There are plenty of 3.5" drives that run at 5400 or more likely 5900 RPM these days and have been for years.  What slows down laptop drives is the physical size.  Given a certain data density and certain RPM, the smaller the disk, the fewer bits per second are flying under the needle.  It's the same reason higher capacity drives tend to be faster, even with all else equal, and why drive speed is best on a new one (where you're dealing with data stored around the outer edge) and slows down as you fill it up and move into dealing with data stored near the middle.

I'm not surprised.  I've experienced a similar issue myself once before.  I set an image as my wallpaper that, admittedly, was rather high resolution, probably much more so than most they would expect you to use, but that is no excuse for what happened.  It caused the launcher to get stuck in a loop of loading and then immediately crashing.  I had to factory reset the phone in order to resolve the issue.  Such a trivial, (what should be) harmless action should not be able to create such a serious problem.  That is just terrible software design, period.  The fact that the image should not have caused issues is not just my opinion either, I later tried it with the default launcher and it handled it fine, indicating it was indeed possible.

I can think of several layers of protection that Android should have against this sort of thing.  For one, any launcher should maintain a settings log of sorts, or a backup config file which consists of how everything was configured before the most recent change.  By doing this, it would be able to automatically revert any change if said change causes it to get stuck in a crashing loop.  Second, if you are using a custom launcher and the system detects that it has become stuck in a crashing loop, it should automatically revert to the default launcher.  Finally, If the problem persists, it should be capable of automatically performing a reset on the launcher without needing to format the entire phone.  I believe that all of these features would be relatively simple to implement, and given the presence of issues such as what I described, as well as what has been demonstrated in this news article, I also believe that to have them would not be excessive in the least.

vanished got a reaction from Eschew in Pagefile.sys big even though only 24% of RAM is being used.
The system automatically moves data around depending on what is probably best for performance.  For example, if you have an application that is actively using all of the memory it has reserved, Windows will ensure that it is stored in RAM for best performance.  Alternatively, if a program has reserved a large amount of memory that is remaining relatively static, it may shuffle that off to the pagefile in order to free up RAM that could be better utilized by other applications, or even just for caching other frequently used data so that programs will launch faster.  Although data stored in the pagefile will be substantially slower to retrieve than data stored in RAM, this should not cause any noticeable performance issues if the data stored there is not being accessed much anyway.  For this reason, you can perhaps have much more memory in use than you have RAM and not have issues.  Only when the amount of "active" memory that needs to be fast exceeds the amount of space available in RAM should performance issues become apparent.  When and if this does happen though, "apparent" could be considered quite an understatement.

Apparently an oddity with color profiles on android phones (Notably Samsung and Pixel but other phones are vulnerable as well) would cause the phone to crash on boot, possibly requiring a reset. Google was first notified of a similar issue back in 2018 but could not reproduce it.
    Source: https://www.androidauthority.com/image-wallpaper-crash-soft-brick-1124505/
Thoughts: This is some sheer coincidence that somehow this specific mix of colors would soft brick a phone as Ice_universe on another tweet said that a color alteration would prevent the crash. Google better fix this quick without needing a full OS patch or else this could easily be a malware payload or some other forms of attack.

My word, it's about time isn't it?  And to be clear, it's good that they're still offering it for the people who have such old systems that they need it, or perhaps just want it (even if they could run 64 bit) just for the memory usage benefits, but there is certainly no reason I can fathom that a new machine in 2020 should be sold this way.  I would say the same thing applies to at least as far back as 2015.
