If you bought a 3090 to play at 1080p there's more wrong than just the drivers lol

MrTralala reacted to Stahlmann in Intel's TDP ratings for higher-end CPUs make no sense anymore
Both the TDP numbers of Intel and AMD CPUs are not what you get. On intel it's often more because most BIOS have some sort of "MCE" enabled by default, which take them beyond stock restrictions. And afaik AMD's TDP formula doesn't even include power consumption.

To be quite frank, they have never made much sense. I guess the move from "not much" to "completely zero" is still some sort of an achievement, but....

Maybe if we pretend like this is a really good graphics card all the scalpers will rush out to buy it, then get stuck with a bunch they can't sell.
Wow, the GT 1010!? I've been waiting for this for years! This is going to be the best value graphics card on the market! Hopefully I will be able to buy one on launch!

No, but the hope is that a CEO with a technical background is more likely to give the engineers the resources they need to do the work properly, rather than make everything focused about profit margins.

Not that that's remotely assured of course.

MrTralala reacted to Badger906 in Why are people hating on RT
everyone calling it a gimmick are people that haven't been around long enough to base an opinion. mid to late 90s.. we had shadows!! those things that are in every game.. that before were just a generic blob under object.. they were gimmicks, they weren't worth the performance hit. well now look at games.. thing they are still a gimmick. and then the physx argument.. the reason that's not thrown around anymore is because it became such a norm that it wasn't a toggle feature any more.

the vast majority of people shit on RT because when it 1st cad out they didn't like the cost of the 2080ti, this making it bad. the vast majority of people hating it won't have an RTX card.. you'll see 1060s, 1650s etc etc.. that's like me saying pagan Hondas are dumb because the fuel consumption is bad.. while rolling around in my defender... that's shaped like a house brick.

It did gain mainstream adoption though, with both AMD and the new consoles having support for it, what other mainstream gaming platforms out there other than Nintendo that doesn't have it?

I think people don't understand that this technology is still in its infancy and its potential is not even fully realized, it will take time before a full transformation to happen until all games and every aspect of lightning is Ray Traced with no option for rasterization methods, but it will happen eventually, it also allows developers to focus on other aspects of the game rather than having to work on lighting with baking lights and such.

MrTralala reacted to tim0901 in TSMC Could Rollout 2nm by 2023
Remember everyone: there is no standard naming scheme for these manufacturing processes. The naming of process nodes is very much marketing-driven and is not related to any measurable distance on a chip - it is just a name. TSMC could choose to call their 2nm node a '1pm manufacturing node' if they wanted and nobody would be able to stop them.

What makes the difference between manufacturing processes is transistor density, and we have no idea what sorts of densities to expect from these upcoming nodes. If the density is similar between two nodes, then it doesn't matter if one is labelled as 5nm and the other as 2nm - both will likely perform similarly to each other. Saying that Intel won't reach 2nm until 3-4 years later is meaningless as we don't know the actual difference in densities between these processes. The only way we will know which is better is when they actually come to market.

    The same way as a 4GHz processor isn't necessarily better than a 3GHz processor, a 2nm node isn't necessarily better than a 5nm node.

As pointed out earlier, on average, outside of RT, they're near enough the same as each other. There is no decisive victory for AMD.

DLSS can and has been implemented independently of RT.

nvidia has better performance in many games at 1080p and 1440p. Which ones do you want to cherry pick?

    Really? Please expand.

nvidia can also use "Freesync" displays too. AMD can't use G-sync.

6800XT is a nice card, but there is no clear winner comparing it against a 3080 for gaming, unless you cherry pick specific scenarios. I think the quoted post very much puts it into a similar position of early Zen like I mentioned in a previous post. It does most of the things mostly good enough, but the more you look at it, the more areas of weakness there are. Throwing more resource in some areas doesn't always offset that.

MrTralala reacted to tim0901 in Toe to toe - 6800/6800XT reviews out
And they're also ignoring some of benefits of Nvidia cards (some of which are a big deal):

3080 has superior performance at 4k on average, not "in some games". You can't claim AMD being better at 1080p and 1440p as a point in their favor without respecting that Nvidia winning at 4k is a point in theirs, even if to you personally it doesn't matter. And saying it's "a resolution nobody plays at" is kinda ignorant when its popularity is rising faster than that of 1440p (which is shrinking in popularity according to the steam hardware survey). CUDA - a huge deal for pretty much anyone that's not a pure gamer. AMD has OpenCL, which is open source which is nice, but pretty much all OpenCL software sucks ass these days in comparison as nobody works on it anymore. The RT cores actually work in rendering workloads and aren't a buggy mess right now - see LTT review. Tensor cores. Anyone interested in using these cards for ML (eg, universities, researchers, startups) will get a massive performance boost from using these. Even if AMD finally gets ROCm working on their RDNA-based cards, their performance in ML workloads is still going to suck in comparison due to the lack of tensor cores. Nvidia control panel may look like it's out of the 80s, but it's rock solid and works every time. I'll take functional but plain over flashy any day. Don't fix what's not broken. The rest of Nvidia's software stack. RTX Broadcast/Voice for example.

Also note SK Hynix GDDR6 is on 21nm node and far less desirable than Samsung GDDR6 on 10LPP.

Micron was the initial GDDR6 supplier for Nvidia but they switch to Samsung, again because their GDDR6 is superior. Micron only supplies GDDR6X to Nvidia now, being that only they make it.
