Toe to toe - 6800/6800XT reviews out

The NDA for the new AMD graphic cards have come out and it's showing promising results: 6800XT sometimes faster than the 3080 and 3090, especially on 1080p. Overall, 6800XT is better than the 3080 on price to performance.
Though if you play on 4K or any higher resolutions, Nvidia's higher bandwidth memory seems to allow it to pull more frames than its Navi counterpart.

Thoughts: It's certainly great, and probably the competition will stop the scalpers faster now that the choices are wider. I wonder what will Nvidia react to these.

If anything, it will make scalpers more ambitious, unless AMD actually put sin measures to circumvent distribution other than "Hey Vendors, we strongly recommend these practices when selling cards! "

Very interesting. Certainly no reason to be upset if you've bought a 3080, and it's good to finally see competition in the high end GPU space. Seems like a good choice for high refresh rate, low resolution (1080p) gaming, but for RT and 4K Nvidia is still king, especially in RT performance.

 

It's funny to see how little difference RAGE MODE made in the GN content. AKA negative performance vs stock in most tests. Not entirely sure how that makes sense when all it does is open up the power limit a bit (from my understanding) and I'm curious as to where AMD got their 1-2% uplift from.

 

Also very interested to see how much will change once Nvidia releases their own Resizable BAR solution. The benchmarks Steve did showed it either made zero difference, or made a big enough difference to make the choice of GPU manufacturer meaningful, depending on the title.

I've always cared about the power consumption. So these cards are very compelling for me, even though I have never owned an AMD GPU since the 9600 GT in my first build.

One thing to point out (that techpowerup do not specify in their coverage as far as I could see) is that SAM is enabled in all of their benchmarks - this is clear when comparing the FPS numbers to those seen in their SAM review. This will therefore likely change things (especially perf/watt) when Nvidia brings their Resizable BAR solution in the future.

 

Not saying it isn't impressive, but that AMD's lead in this regard probably won't be this large for long.

Was hoping for a better result tbh with the 6800XT vs 3080.

 

The performance is "hit and miss" vs Nvidia, and the price is more or less the same. Thats not enough to make those who historically bought Nvidia, to switch to AMD.

Add on Nvidia has better RT, and has DLSS 2.0 ..i think AMD missed an opportunity here.

With the extra features of Nvidias 3080, the measly $50 difference just isnt enough.

 

I suspect its down to corporate penny pinching, purposefully making the 6800XT compete so close to the 3080 in traditional rasterization, so they can then market the full 80CU GPU card at a higher price. I would expect the 6900XT to perform where we all 'hoped' the 6800XT was going to vs the 3080. After all the 6900XT is no different from the 6800XT except for those extra CU's.

 

One can only hope that in the coming generations, competition forces both these companies to put the consumer 1st again.

As of right now, based on pricing and assumed availability of both cards, the 3080 despite the lower VRAM, is the better choice.

 

The next question is, how will Nvidia place a 3080ti?

Will they continue on the 'consumer fking' trend placing the 3080ti above $700 ..or will they place it like older x80ti cards, replacing the current 3080 price point and lowering the 3080 price. i suspect the former.

Interesting times, and no doubt will lead to more debate between people who may have different priorities in different areas. Since results seem pretty much in line with earlier there are no surprises. It is a good catch up generation like they have been doing with CPU, and it remains to be seen if they can continue a similar momentum as with their CPU side to surpass nvidia in the next generation.

 

To me, today, feature performance and software are still clearly in nvidia's ball park, which are more important to me than power efficiency or some attempt at performance value judgement. Of course, if your needs are different, you may well come to a different conclusion.

Interesting how well the 6800XT performs,the lower power consumption is nice, so is more VRAM. The value vs. a 3080 depends on if you want DLSS or better RT performance, I'm not surprised Nvidia RTX performs better though, DLSS is only available for games that Nvidia performs machine leaning on, RT is a nice feature but it's not that important to me, so I'll probably get whatever card that is in stock.

Absolutely, and if GN's review is any indication then AIB models should be even better. Steve found that the higher fan speeds required for the temps seen were drawing too much power and so were affecting what overclock could be achieved, which shouldn't be a problem on higher end AIB cards.

Not brilliant value though. The 3070, at $70 cheaper, has a far better value proposition.

This of course assumes you can actually buy either card for a sane price, which is likely to be impossible for quite a while.

Very true and the 3070 has better raytracing performance also, but the power consumption difference is huge.
