  1. Thread cleaned a little.

Please remember that as per the Community Standards, trolling and flamebait are not allowed. This includes Apple vs. Android arguments; however because this discussion has been pretty civil so far we're willing to let it stay open for now.

That being said, the Community Standards still applies. Any personal attacks or insults in this thread will be removed and those who dished them out will be warned, and if things get too heated the thread itself will be closed.

    Keep it friendly, please.

Sorry. I didn't mean to violate Community Standards. But I don't see such Topics as Birth Control as remotely Incendiary nor Political in 2020. I will however follow the Rules here.

Whether they should or shouldn't be is a discussion in and of itself, but unfortunately the reality is that they are definitely incendiary, in so much as discussions relating to them often quickly descend into outright flamewars and insult-flinging. It's one of those topics that can bring about some of the strongest emotions in people.

  3. There does look to be some minor improvements. The original had a filter of some sort that could be pretty overbearing; it would completely crush all detail in darker areas of the game (though wasn't a problem during night-time iirc), and I'm not seeing it in the footage for the remaster. Also looks like there's some minor texture improvements here and there (some visible even in motion which is nice), slightly improved lighting, and possibly an implementation of TAA? The original was always a little frustrating because it didn't work with driver-forced MSAA because the engine used a deferred renderer, so if they've got a good implementation of TAA in now that'd be sweet.

That said, it's 99% a rerelease rather than a remaster. And them choosing to lock it to 60fps on PC to "level the playing field" is the dumbest rationale possible; it's an arcade racer you play with your mates, not a competitive driving sim that needs absolute parity for everyone who's playing. The experience on PC shouldn't be held back just because they can't push it as far on consoles. :|

    console pleb /s

As much as I'm full into PC at this point, the Xbox Series S does look pretty compelling given the price/performance. Maybe if Forza and other Xbox titles I'm interested in were still exclusive, I'd bother. I tried just for shits to preorder the PS5, but Best Buy was a complete mess of a site and I never saw the preorder button.

Yeah. I'm going PlayStation just because of the exclusives (and also because the controller looks and sounds great imo). As a predominantly PC gamer there's just not much point going Xbox for me when just about all their exclusives going forward will be coming to the PC, too. That said what MS are doing with GamePass is terrific, especially the bundling together of a console, GamePass, and Live Gold for a really reasonable monthly fee. It's gonna make next-gen much more accessible for a lot of people than has traditionally been the case - even for the full-fat Series X.

We should maybe get back to the topic, though. :D

I think you can preorder them now.

You can try, anyway. I've been trying to preorder the PS5 since day one; Amazon here in the UK sold out of its first batch in ~40 mins, and any other time a store or site's got more stock availability, it's gone in minutes. I don't expect I'll be able to get one at launch now. :(

Would you say Bungie has improved since?

For me personally, since my computer is already out of its league trying to run Destiny 2, motion blur just makes my already horrible low textures (rendered at 80%) vomit inducing.

I’d say Destiny 2 is objectively speaking a huge improvement in its implementation of motion blur over Halo: Reach. But its use is so heavy-handed that I can totally see why people don’t like it. Heck I didn’t; I disabled it, even though in a lot of games these days I like motion blur.

Not entirely. In motion there's stuff that still looks awful.

That's not the result of motion blur. So far as I'm aware, the motion blur implementation was completely removed / disabled in MCC.

Reach has various other issues which can cause issues in motion, though. The game's broken at any framerate above 60 as various aspects of the game (critically, camera movement) are locked to 60. This was fixed in the other titles in the game though thankfully, and 343 have said they're hoping to fix the issues in Reach at some point later too.

I have yet to see a single game where motion blur made the game feel or seem smoother. Not one single game.

Halo: Reach tried to do it. But its implementation wasn't very good, and they were using a super early form of TAA which when combined with the motion blur just led to a really unpleasantly blurry image in motion. Thankfully it's gone in the Master Chief Collection, both for the Xbox and PC.

Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal have what I'd say is a perfect example of how to use it right. They have a fantastic implementation of per-object motion blur, and use it for example to give weapon animations a better appearance of motion.

I feel that motion blur gets a bad rep just because a lot of people (incorrectly) assume that it's the same as it used to be, where it would just blur the entire screen and make everything in motion look terrible. But it's much more advanced than that these days, and most good devs and games use it in beneficial and even subtle ways.

gonna go out on a limb and say I didn't really get in the way of anything, but OP can be the judge of that

@GamerBlake did I ruin your thread or are we good

I can be the judge of that. You were needlessly being a bit of a dick. Don't.

Please read the Tech News section's Posting Guidelines before submitting a topic. This topic was already posted here.

  11. Hey all, I'm sorry that it has taken me so long to push the badges out. Unfortunately I've been quite ill and busy over the Christmas and New Year period and haven't had the time or ability to start assigning them. But at last, the badges have been handed out! :D

The event badges should have been handed out to everyone who met the requirements for them. If you believe you were supposed to receive the badges and they haven't appeared on your account yet, please send me a PM and I'll sort it for you. Hopefully though everyone has received their badges without issue.

    Thanks for your patience everyone!

  12. @carpentry2010 Please edit your topic to meet the Tech News section's Posting Guidelines.

Just as a reminder for everyone, if a topic violates our Community Standards or a section's posting requirements, we ask that you report it to the mod team and leave it for us to deal with. Technically it's against the Community Standards to "backseat moderate", which includes telling a fellow user that they've broken the rules.

What about the possible clear definition from the mod team on what Misleading and Clickbait are in the tech news posting guidelines?

Currently a concern is that mods approach reports of misleading and clickbait titles quite differently depending on the mod and some offending posts aren't updated.

I suppose we can add an example of clickbait to the rules. Something like "Samsung and Verizon are working on a 5G Smartphone even though it could give you cancer" would seem appropriate.

  14. Ultimately, this would segment the community and create two groups; a privileged few who can contribute to the section without restriction, and a 'lesser' majority who cannot. It's important to remember that we are first and foremost a community forum, not a tech news forum. Our tech news section is intended for the entire community to contribute to and participate in; locking off access or providing only an 'elite group' with higher privileges goes completely against the community ideals of the forum.

It's worth pointing out perhaps that around 4 years ago now there were discussions on the creation of "The Official LTT News Team", with the intention of promoting higher-quality news content on the forum and opening the possibility of more original content as opposed to the largely reposted content we have right now. Ultimately however this idea was rejected for technical feasibility reasons, as well as for introducing the same issues mentioned above - it would fragment the community and create an unwelcoming atmosphere for users new to either the Tech News section or the forum itself. Instead, the Tech News rules were created - and whilst there have been some niggling issues from time to time, by and large they have had a dramatically beneficial impact on the quality of submissions and even replies in the section.

We are always open to recommendations, suggestions and ideas on how we can keep the tech news cleaner and less "clickbait-y". But we will not be implementing this specific change.
