dmanschramm got a reaction from stormy9000 in Upgrading my monitor help needed.
Having a 1440p Monitor now, I can definitely say that it's the way to go. Even though I'm only hitting 60fps instead of 100Hz on a 1080 panel, I find that the resolution with the IPS panel that I have to be perfect for gaming. Honestly, I'm not planning to go into the competitive field, and find that the beauty of games such as Battlefield 4, Witcher 3, and Far Cry 4 are just too good to pass up. But if you're into more competitive play and want to get the maximum you can out of your monitor, sticking with a higher refresh rate is always better, but most people don't play at a level where that really matters.

We all want to enjoy the game we're playing, so why not make it look better with a better resolution eh?

    Hope this helps

It is because they are simple. People trust the brand to work and since it does they gain following.

Most people don't understand anything about computers, but they know if you buy apple you probably get the best or one of the best there is and that is good enough for majority of population.

I'd say that you have everything. Your mobo will come with a SATA cable so I wouldn't buy it unless you want that locking latch. I also would recommend an SSD for booting, which will make it much snappier.

    hey @dmanschramm

i also have the same cooler with the stock fans running at 25% but they are super quiet and it's not affecting cooling performance for my i5 4670k on 4.4ghz (1.275V) never went above 70C on aida
you might just have gotten a bad pair of fans.

and yes noctua are good fans if you wanna replace them.

dmanschramm reacted to Stefan1024 in - FINISHED- Full passive powerful workstation / gaming rig... who said it can't be done?
According to your voting this build is officially named: "Silence! I kill you!"

    Part 1

This project is a mixture of feasibility study, private study of thermodynamics, need for a new workstation / gaming rig and a…. insanity

I study electrical engineering and I’m finished with my study next summer. I do a lot of work at home and game from time to time. Around last august I get annoyed by waiting up to 20 minutes to synthesizes a FGPA based design. And because I’m working next to my computer I wanted a very silent one. So I bought a “special silent system” from a (at least it looked like) distributor with a lot of good reviews…. It was a disaster. The sound was OK, but the CPU was hitting 97°C while rendering within minutes despite of the huge cooler. Luckily I could annul and get all my money back. So I decided to get a totally passive computer without a single moving part. But I only find one single heavily overpriced distributor.

Because compiling requires a lot of memory bandwidth and single thread performance I’d like to use an i7 4790k (~90W). I don’t overclock the CPU but the “k” model offers better thermal performance.
Well when you google for powerful passive computers everybody says it’s impossible and/or insane. But since I have a calculator and a working brain the required 0.5 K/W are possible. With a heat sink around 10 kg

The graphic card was and other story. Luckily Nvidia released the power efficient series just in time so I went with a GTX 970 Strix (~160W).

The rest of the components where:
    MB: Asrock Z97M OC Formula
    RAM: HyperX Beast, 2x, 8GB, DDR3-2133
    PSU: Seasonic Platinum-520 Fanless
    SSD1: Samsung 850 Pro, 256 GB
    SSD2: Samsung 850 EVO, 1000 GB
... and a DVD drive (OK this is the only moving part in the PC but I'm using it around once a month)

As far I knew the key components I was looking for the heat sinks. New once are very expensive, but I got four used heat sinks (20 kg at all) for 150 Euro. The next step was to construct the rest of the system around the heat sinks in Solidworks.

    Part 2 follow soon....
And don't forget to vote. I need a name for the build.

I dont recommend it, even with fans CPUs can reach high temps. What more without any fans??? Maybe consider buying noise dampening foam on your case? Or get a new case with noise dampening? Get silent fans?

If it fits on and you can plug it in, it will work. Static pressure is better, as it has an easier time pushing air through the rad. Also, bigger (140 MM) is better.
    So YES IT WILL WORK

I use the NF-P14s redux fan (which is 140mm static pressure) on a x41 Kracken in my server and it is superb. Not once heard a peep out of it, even under heavy load. The more expensive variant is the NF-A14, which is again 140mm SP. Either one would be great.

Get the Noctua fans, as passive cooling on a radiator doesn't really work, and it will heat up fast. Also, just make sure to use the low noise adapters on the NFF-12's and you will hear very little

dmanschramm reacted to Joshndroid in Using an AIO Watercooler with Passive Cooling?
    First off;

Yes you can use the passive cooling ability however i would reocmmend that you have some fans for case air flow (mayeb even some slower quieter fans at the top of the case; im assuming that where your rad is)

Yes you can also use the motherboard to control the fans on the rad, thats what i currently am doing so i could set a custom fan profile for those fans for that reason except the opposite, i dont really care about the noise i wanted the performance.

3rd idea is probably the best, by getting some better, quiter fans. I would go this route myself if i was sufferring your situation.

Looks like a great build! I might recommend a Corsair RM 750 or CX 750 as the PSU is usually one of the more likely components to fail and Corsair is a very reliable choice.
Also, the idea of making it 16GB is good if you're going to be doing a lot of intensive CPU work.
Other than that the build looks great. Happy Building!

Oh by the way, it's always better to go big on the PSU for added upgradability and stability for overclocking.

ASRock is as great mobo company, along with MSI, Gigabyte, and Asus (my favourite). They make very reliable boards and are generally not succeptible to failure (provided you get a board that isn't $40)

Samsung is a very reputable SSD company. Their EVO series is very popular and reliable. A good choice.
Other good companies include Crucial, Intel, AData, and Sandisk. Kingston is alright but the previous choices are better.

    Hope this helps

i personally REALLY like the later versions of bullguard, their 2011-era versions REALLY just rekt their reputation, but newer versions are pretty good, especially when comparing to norton (sadly, what my entire family uses...)

ps: my hate for norton is because it takes 30% of your gaming performance, and applies magic to make it disappear.

Basically any DDR3 RAM will work in basically any system. The only issue is clearance. If you have a large heatsink (aftermarket), you'll just have to buy lower profile RAM.
Gskill has generally been the best RAM producer compatibility-wise. Corsair, Crucial, A-Data, Kingston, etc. are all good brands though!

    Hope this helps

I LOVE consumer, everyday videos like this. If LMG find less feedback on these type vids, I'd offer that these types are what peoples come across when they are looking for a video for a special use. For instance, the 'do RAM speeds really matter' wasn't one I think I commented on. But I must have shared it to at least a dozen friends since I came across it.     Boosting Wifi? Totally worhwhile! Wish y'all did vids on functionality of stuff like Airport Express, repeaters and the whether there's a 'true' benefit to upgrading a router over what Time Warner/Virgin Broadband/XYZ-ISP provides most home users.

If you're going to do anything graphically intensive (games, photoshop), get a graphics card.

I would step down to an i5-4690K and step down to a 500GB or less 850 EVO SSD and add a GTX 750Ti.

I would edit/give you a parts list but for some reason pc part picker hates me right now using it in US mode (Canada problems smh)

Hope this gets you in price range!

EDIT: If it is still not cheap enough, you don't really need 16GB of RAM for what you're doing (general use).

EDIT 2: Check out this site (http://www.logicalincrements.com/) and they have suggestions for various price points.
