boblikepie reacted to Misanthrope in Linus Torvalds is furious at Intel over its handling of the current processor security flaw
Well he did posted a pretty damning rant about intel too:

I have a few thoughts on this. I do think that it's a good idea that they do have OTA firmware updates cause at least they have the ability to provide security patches to these devices (which a lot don't seem to be able to). What I don't understand is why there's no recovery firmware. I haven't seen the devices myself but why isn't there a button on the locked side (seems you can still use a physical key to unlock it) that can rollback to the previous update or install a new firmware.
However and maybe I'm just getting old but I don't understand the crazy for "smart" devices like this, thermostats, smart fridges, things like Google Home. All I see is not only giving away your privacy but potentially someone even going as far as burning down your home. Every time I go to the movies there's an add for the Telstra smart home and being able to turn off say your hair straightener from your movie seat because you forgot to before you left, if someone got into your "smart home" account who knows what damage they could do to your property. Maybe this is finally the point where I can say I'm not hip anymore.

that will be a problem
if AMD does go down, due to how a company declares bankruptcy, every patent they have will be sold off,
meaning intel could buy the x64 architecture for themselves and monopolise the market
problem with a monopolised market, price, since it will be the only choice, most companies will jack the price WAY UP to make more money, and customers can't do anything because thats the only choice....
but if you read the competition law https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Competition_law
if you read further some countries outright don't allow a Monopoly there, meaning the company can't sell their product their
and in turn, other companies who buys the company products for their own products (e.g. Dell buying intel CPU's for their computers), can't sell their product because it contains a banned product
meaning the US, china and russia can't buy any unsold computers because they have intel CPU's in them
and many computers run on intel and many newer computers have a intel CPU in them
thats not good, and if you got here congrats! you have read the entire post!

boblikepie reacted to Commodus in Netflix further enhancing the Android Masterrace
You used "masterrace" without batting an eye. If you're an iOS user or just a more moderate Android user... maybe choose a joke that's in better taste and less antagonistic?

I hope this starts us on the route that any headset will work with a vr compatible game/app just like I can use any monitor for my pc.

boblikepie reacted to RH00D in Vessel acquired and shut down by Verizon
Lmao at the people acting like Vessel was bought against their will. Verizon didn't force Vessel owners into anything. Vessel chose to sell to Verizon because they obviously felt it was the most viable option for them.

They aren't aimed at us tech enthusiasts, if the general market is going to buy them then they'll just tell us to fuck off with our opinions

I just got the email about this and instantly thought of what this means for LTT. I guess we'll be going back to YouTube only which is fine I guess, very curious to see how they will talk about this on WAN this week

boblikepie reacted to ExplodingTNT in Vessel acquired and shut down by Verizon
Verizon has announced that they will be buying video startup Vessel (used by LTT, among other popular channels) and shutting it down.
I wonder what Linus will think of this...
Well, it's bad for LTT because they won't be able to make money from Vessel subscribers anymore, but it also marks the end of the one-week exclusivity that messed with Youtube viewers.
Well, at least Vessel subs will get refunds...

I want to see it.
Please, let me see it.

boblikepie reacted to Oshino Shinobu in Amazon fined £65k for trying to ship "dangerous goods" by air
Oh, £65,000. Must have been a big impact for a small company like Amazon....
They were also transporting flammable, pressurised aerosols. No information if they were shipped on the same aircraft, but it could only take a single battery to explode/catch fire to set off a chain reaction and bring down the plane.

Funny seeing people objecting to this acquisition (albeit just a rumour) just because it's Apple involved..

boblikepie reacted to Godlygamer23 in Apple in Talks to Acquire Luxury Carmaker and Formula One Team McLaren
Proprietary fuel pumps. Ugh. I'll need a $300 adapter to go to a normal station. And then the next model will use a different design, forcing those pumps to change, and make us buy another adapter.
I'm going to give myself nightmares.

boblikepie reacted to Volbet in Europe's Court of Justice rules that hyperlinking can infringe on copyright
Hmm, as far as I know this has always been against the legislation in the EU. That ruling doesn't really bring up anything new.
Hyperlinking (and to some extend deep linking) has always been and will remain legal for the foreseeable future.
What the ECJ has ruled in this case is that linking to non-published or un-licensed material goes against the EU's copyright laws.
And the present case certainly goes against that.
What geenstijl did was essentially robbing the publishing rights from Playboy.
