Circuit City is coming back

Yup, Circuit City is planning to make a comeback, after being filed for bankruptcy in 2008.

 

 

 

 According to Twice, a publication that covers tech industry news, Circuit City is preparing to return soon. The report claims the company, which filed for bankruptcy in 2008, will be opening a new store in Dallas, Texas this coming June, led by the efforts of a new ownership group. Circuit City's also said to have the support of many major brands, including Canon, Intel and Sony, after holding successful meetings at CES 2016.

 

Of course, they are planning to redesign the company once they come back.

It is aimed to be targeted for millenials, and will sell stuff such as 3D printers, drones, headphones, and mobile devices.

It plans to own 50-100 corporate locations and 100-200 franchise-owned locations.

It's website is also planning to come back online sometime this spring. ( http://www.circuitcity.com ) (not up yet like linus thought on the wan show lol but its just there.)

 

My thoughts:

I really don't remember the history of Circuit City or if it was a liked or disliked store, because when it was around I was still too young to know these things. The only memory I have of a circuit city is when I was about 6ish, and we were buying speakers for our computer. From what I remember it was a Best Buy like store, but I might be mistaken. It looks like it wants to be more of a Radio-Shack sized store selling usual tech items. There are a bunch of old abandoned Circuit Cities around here, most of them are just being used for that Spirit halloween store thing.

If it comes back as a competitor to Best Buy however, that's good because that would mean lower prices, usually.

 

But then again i barely even know what a Circuit City was exactly so....

So basically they want to have a come back to file for bankruptcy again to fork the bill over to the taxpayers, wonderful.

Lets see what they do to become unique... if they become unique of course. There are already various electronics stores out there.

 

Wonder if they'll open a IPO and become openly traded.

Oh my god, I remember going to these things. Back then the logo was just Circuit City in the red circle. Not "The City" and Circuit city underneath like that pic.

As for what's in the store, I don't remember too much as I always went to the video games, it was before I had my own console, but it should have been very similar to a Best Buy. Mostly mainstream devices and it's structured very similarly to Best Buy

 

When they revive this franchise, I REALLY hope they sell proper computer components like Fry's does. Really useful, I live in Oakland and the 2 nearest fry's is in Concord and Fremont. At least a 1.5-2 hour drive to either location.

I used to go there as a kid, I loved it. Hopefully they learn how to actually sell things, have ads, price match, sell PC parts and be glorious again. Maybe like a huge RadioShack?

Oh my god, I remember going to these things. Back then the logo was just Circuit City in the red circle. Not "The City" and Circuit city underneath like that pic.

As for what's in the store, I don't remember too much as I always went to the video games, it was before I had my own console, but it should have been very similar to a Best Buy. Mostly mainstream devices and it's structured very similarly to Best Buy

 

When they revive this franchise, I REALLY hope they sell proper computer components like Fry's does. Really useful, I live in Oakland and the 2 nearest fry's is in Concord and Fremont. At least a 1.5-2 hour drive to either location.

 

Yeah, theres still a very original Circuit City left behind about ~30min away from me.

Honestly Best Buy is the only big tech/computer store i know near me. The nearest Fry's Electronics and Microcenter is in Atlanta, Georgia, a state above, and like an 8 or so hour drive lol rip me.

Radio shack was tiny although it had many things, like outdated ass useless wires and some stuff. I loved how they had cables for anything I needed. Hopefully it becomes a PC part warehouse/store, that would be awesome.

No PC parts, desktops suck, laptops are not catered to my usage, I don't play consoles anymore, and the only phone I'm planning to buy is the rumoured S7, and I'll probs buy it through T-mobile or Samsung directly if there's payment plans and if it's cheaper. Edit: Honestly, the only reason I still go to Best Buy is out of pure boredom. The only thing I remember buying there in a very long, long time are accessories for my computer and phone. Oh, and TVs too if my family really wants/needs one. I think the last thing I bought at Best Buy was a Corsair MM200 cloth mousepad at least 6 months ago.

 

There was a Circuit City near the Best Buy I was talking about when I get off the freeway. Once it got shut down, it eventually turned into a Marshall's clothing store. That Marshall's is still going on today, and I doubt it'll turn back into the Circuit City that I visited back in elementary to kickstart my modern gaming habits

They mostly sell just cables, very few mobiles/laptops, and PCBs, etc for the people who like to tinker with circuit boards and do soldering. 

I really doubt it'll turn into a PC part store, every last store is much too small to have a wide selection of PC parts the way Fry's does. The cases by themselves could take up 1/16th of the store's space!

This not encouraging at all.

 

The money is in services. 

Offering services that consumers actually care about/find useful requires investment in technical proficiency.  Big Box retailers just aren't up to the task in 2016.

 

Amazon just snipes everyone else in product selection and price.

lol 8 hours is nothing. (also my correction, after checking, its about 6.5 hours without any traffic the whole way via I75)

I usually have to go on 25-30 hour drives to Michigan every summer. I enjoy the drives honestly lol. The actual drive straight is about 21ish hours, but that doesnt count in stuff like stopping for gas, dining. Suprisingly we never stop for sleeping, because our parents always switch off every 5ish hours, while one sleeps in the back seat and the other drives.

 

But yeah, the nearest Best Buy here is about 10 minutes away, and so are pretty much all the other stores lol

Circuit city was the place i went to, to check out computer components and other computer stuffs. I still remember going to that place, just to hold the ati 9500 pro, even though i was not able to afford it during that time. A few years later i got my psu from them, still using it right now. Circuit city was like a mix of bestbuy and microcenter.

I bought my first flatscreen TV at Circuit City when I moved out of my parent's house many many many moons ago, it was an awesome experience.

 

I liked Circuit City more than Best Buy because the computer parts and pre-made systems was at least 4 times more than Best Buy at the time. If I went to Best Buy they had maybe 3 or 4 video cards available total but Circuit City would have dozens including the latest card that I could never afford (this was also pre-Newegg). The people that worked there were giant nerds (like me) and actually had a clue what they were talking about versus the Geek Squad at Best Buy who read from a script and couldn't understand me when I asked specific questions.

 

All this being said, I think the last time I was in a Best Buy was 2+ years ago looking for a replacement router when mine died so I could get back online to order a new router so I don't foresee me using either Best Buy or Circuit City especially since Amazon has same day delivery and if I order a router off my phone I can have it in ~6 hours.

Kinda, tigerdirect's parent company bought them, but has since sold tigerdirect (Systemax for reference) .

 

Wait according to some info I looked up tigerdirect was circuit city???
