USA enforcing mandatory drone registration with Transportation Dept. by Christmas

According to NBC News, the United States federal government plans to require that all flying drones be registered with the U.S. Department of Transportation. This comes after multiple incidents in which drones have come close to large aircraft, nearly causing collisions or impeding emergency procedures in the process.

The regulations will reportedly be announced today, with the government working alongside the drone industry to create a means for registering all devices. The rules may be in place by the time Christmas rolls around - perfect for all those drone gifts given a couple months from now.

Hardly surprising really, in fact more of an.inevitability really. What is surprising is the speed at which they want to roll this out though. 2 months seems a little rushed to me.

And no specifics on how it's going to work yet either.

Confirmed, there's been a task force setup to handle the process. Registration will be with the DoT and could be implemented by Christmas this year.

How can they force existing owners to register? How do they know they've got them all?

Simple. A cop sees you flying a drone, asks to see your registration. Don't have one? Sorry, governments drone now. Also you pay a fine.

Aren't drones in this case the quad and hexa copter vehicles? R/C planes and helicopters haven't caused any problems so I hope they make the distinction between the two.

well... R/C planes and Helicopers are harder to fly. way harder (ive tried RC planes a few times.... its a nightmare compared to even a 10 dollar drone, let alone the 500 dollar one i tested at a stand)

 

Also, there has yet to be easily availible systems for mounting go-pros + guns on even a RC helicopter.... While on drones, you can do this, quite easily if you are a bit handy and got the know-how... which means you can create a flying assassin

I know this is taking it a step farther,but isn't that because there's already strict rules on flying r/c planes and helicopters? Like you can only fly them up to a certain height, only a certain distance away, and they must be within sight at all times.

I would have assumed that they would have applied the same laws to drones of course, but if they did, it seems like some people aren't caring.

Someone else pointed this out but R/C planes and hellies take quite a bit of skill to fly compared to self stabilizing drones. I think this kept the number of novices quite low and people had to invest a lot of time to get to the same level of flying that drones give you out of the box. That might be why there are now so many problems. Where I live idk of any rules I just don't fly by the airport

I've flown a very small R/C plane with maybe a 1.5' wing span and it took all my concentration to keep it flying. A friend of mine had some much bigger planes and I could only fly them after they were about 100ft up to give us recovery time

I've seen planes with go pros but its definitely much more intensive to mod planes then it is to mod a self balancing platform. I've also flown some R/C planes and they are no walk in the park to control

Am I the only one that thinks this is a bad idea? It is just more regulation on devices that don't need to be regulated. In my mind, as long as you are on public land you should be able to fly these things since they are just stabilized R/C helicopters. Furthermore, shouldn't the pilots have an altitude ceiling to obey to just like every other R/C pilot? Maybe enforcing that would be a better idea than to have everyone sign their name on some government list. I think we all do that enough already.

Well, unlike most current RC helis you don't need to be in sight to control it, and you can do a lot more with a quadcopter. So essentially you can stay out of sight and use them do transport illegal stuff such as drugs or doing assassination jobs.

 

I think the idea is they want to know who to find if they see some of these drones doing these activities. How do they get everyone to sign the list, however, is something doubtful.

Basically yeah.

 

I don't know why the DoT thinks it has even the slightest reason to get involved when this sort of thing as always been handled by the FAA for several reasons... The FAA needs to set up a proper 'drone' section to deal with this so everyone knows who is in charge of this.
