I5-4690k

so i am helping my sister build her first PC, and she wants to be able to play around with overclocking the CPU so we have decided on the I5-4690k... we are trying to keep the price down where we can though... so basically my question is, 'is it safe to have a mild overclock on this CPU with air cooling or should she get one of those Corsair self contained CPU water cooling things like the H50 - H80 - H100...?'

personally i have ran water cooling on all of my rigs since my 1st build so i dont really know what air cooling can handle...

You'd want the h100i, and you could probably get a decent oc on a 4690k.

It's luck of the draw for overclocking.

sure its fine, as long as you dont increase the voltage to something ridiculous nothing bads gonna happen.

For a moderate amount of money a single tower 120mm fan heatsink like the hyper 212 is gonna let you get most of what you can  out of the cpu.

The difference to a 240mm aio is 200mhz for quite a bit of voltage in general.

I would go air cooling lower cost and plus only point of failure (The Fans) which can be easily replaced.

yes i dont plan on having her overclocking it very high... probably the least amount possible lol... at least until she can figure that stuff out for herself lol...

i have a 4.2ghz on my hyper 212 evo and it doesnt go into the 70 degree range when gaming, it usually stays mid 60`s and on stress test will touch the low 70`s, i could probably get 4.3 out of it fine, and will probably be my next thing i do

as has been said, CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO is the way to go for budget

having both that, the 4690k and a Gigabyte Z97 motherboard, i got 4.5 GHz stable on that thing just with gigabyte's in-OS software.

never breaks 60c, i recently redid my cooling (now my fan configs make sense, what was past me thinking???) and it peaks at 46

i was thinking something like this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103204

i like the top down coolers to help with cooling the mobo components & ram and what not...

you would probably be better with a 212 evo for temps, that seems like it would be a beefy stock typ cooler meant for low profile itx builds and wont yeild the best oc

4.6GHz using a H105 I never cross 60c. The H105 has a thicker radiator than even the H110, you just don't get the software. Which I have never missed.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

I've got my running @ 4.5GHz on a 212 EVO with zero issues, its great and right now with the lower price of DDR3 and Z97 boards, theres no better time to pick one up.

ohhh! I personally wouldn't go air cooled. If you dump the heat from your CPU in the case, you just made a space heater. That means everything in the case has to deal with the heat from the CPU.

Uh... tower air coolers don't really dump the heat into the case. It's almost stright out, as it spits the heat right before an exaust fan.

You are talking about the stock / low profile heatskins.

Nope, all air coolers. Beside wildly inefficient compared to liquid coolers even if the exhaust fan is pointed straight at the exhaust fan for the case it still is sending heat into the case as static pressure fans have a dead spot right behind them.

Uh... sure, they have a dead spot in the center. It's not as if Watercoolers didn't (they both use fans, you know...).

Besides, be my gest and please recomend a WC that performs as good as, and costs as much as a 212 Evo. Remember, low budget solution here, for bvry light overclocks.

yeah i obviously water cooling is better... all i wanted to know is if an air cooler could handle what im doing... again obviously water cooling would do it better... but if i can get away with a $30 air cooler vs a $80 H80 (because that would be the one i would buy if i did) i will...

although that being said, i just realized that an 212 EVO wont fit in my old Mini-ATX case that i was plaining on using... so i may end up going with the H80 anyways instead of buying a new $60 case

Yes air cooling is good. i do not suggest the 212 Evo since there are better options for the money.

A BeQuiet! Pure Rock, BeQuiet! Shadow Rock 2, BeQuiet! Dark Rock 3/ Pro 3 and most Noctua Coolers are all great options. They range from $35-$70. Noctua has a great low profile options.

I think it is the Noctua L9i or so ething
