Oculus Rift will cost more than $350

Although Oculus VR has yet to announce a final price point for the Oculus Rift consumer model, creator Palmer Luckey has now confirmed that it will cost "more than $350." In a new interview, the 22-year-old said he wants the headset to be the best it can be--even if this means it will carry a premium price tag.

In an interview it was stated that more technology has been added to the Rift than was previously in the development kit version.

Instead of making it more affordable, Palmer wants to release a quality product that will be able to last for a while without upgrades.

 

The price to entry into VR isn't just the equivalent of a brand new PS4.

Pc specs have been released:

 

 

• NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater
• Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
• 8GB+ RAM
• Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output (required)
• 2x USB 3.0 ports (required)
• Windows 7 SP1 or newer (required)

Some computer manufactures will be releasing Pre-Built PCs that are "Oculus ready" for around $1000.

 

So now that we know this piece of tech will be carrying a heft price tag, are you planing to be an early adopter and buy it or wait for other manufacturers to release cheaper products?

Yeah but I wouldn't spend $350 on an oculus at all.

Its not that much really in comparison to what some people put into their rigs - its the price you will have to pay for VR from oculus. Probably close to $500 cdn when its released, so I won't be getting one as I'm not buying into the hype train. 

 

The price removes it from the "I will get it to have it/why not" category to the "I really like it and need it" - basically the same category that video cards fall into. And something tells me it is more in the category of a driving wheel which means its not necessary.

Its not that much really - its the price you will have to pay for VR from oculus. Probably close to $500 cdn when its released, so I won't be getting one as I'm not buying into the hype train.

i would like to see a virtual desktop for it, were if can simulate a 3 screen set up for your desktop by moving your head around.

Although I presume the reason for high specs is due to the requirement for high fps and running multiple HD screens - but for what games? Yes if you want to play BF4 on an oculus then you will need something around a 980, but is everyone going to play BF4 with an oculus? And my logic carries onto all demanding titles, and I ask the question what games will people settle on as "best for VR" and what ones are better in the conventional way.

Well, I don't really see how games like BF4 will work on VR, at least currently. Wouldn't the aiming of the gun have to be separated from the camera?

For me, a $200 price point could justify it. That's the price of a really nice racing wheel or something like that.

 

Anything over that seems like a waste for something that may be incompatible with most of my games.
