No, but GM 204 is a proving ground to test yields and behaviors in preparation for making the bigger chips. Intel follows the same strategy, hence mobile chips coming out before desktop which come before server. And the Atom and Avoton chips are made before the Knight's (Xeon Phi) chips. Nvidia probably tweaked quite a bit between GM 204 and GM 200.

Even they say that out of the 15% they expected the 10% dip in performance. The extra 5% could be down to the short test method..... nothing to be worried about. It wont effect FPS.

Do we actually have definitive tests proving Kepler performance is going down in the same games across different drivers, or are people just suspicious because next gen games are eating Kepler alive?

 

The "gimping" is only in one game (Witcher 3) and it was due to Hairworks being jacked up on tessellation resolution (or whatever the quality is called).

 

 

They fixed these problems in the new driver they released, it seems most likely that they put together a witcher 3 driver last minute and only gave maxwell optimization right off the bat.

 

Because benchmarking wise in synthetic benchmarks, kepler is quite close to maxwell.  The 780 TI is very close to the 980 in benchmarks, and the 780 can be close to the 970's at times.

 

(Synthetic benchmarks)   So in theory if drivers are optimized correctly, it should be 780 -> 970 -> 780 ti -> 980 from slowest to fastest.

Yeah it seems like any games that don't support that color compression stuff, the 780 TI comes out on top, and anything that does support it, the 980 comes out on top.

If the 980ti has issues with RAM like the 970 did, its gonna annoy the fuck outta me if people start bitching about it, the card already has 6gb of vram, losing 512mb-1gb or so isn't going to cause that huge of an issue... (unless doing crazy like 8K gaming or some shit like that)

At what boost clock speeds were the GPU's running the tests?
Because the GPU clock makes a huge difference in pixelfillrate performance especially with cards that have that many Cuda cores.
Just to put it in perspective how much the clocks actually make a difference a GTX670 with a 1300mhz OC has the same pixelfillrate as a stock GTX780 even though it has 1000 more Cuda cores.
With the 980 Ti and Titan X only having a small difference of around 200 Cuda cores even a tiny OC  in the 50-100mhz could have large impact on the pixelfillrate especially if the Titan X was boosting slightly higher.

I own a 970 and have seen some of the issues that the slow .5GB of VRAM can cause, imo it doesn't matter a ton, if you go over the 3.5GB, then just drop your settings down a little or turn off AA, big deal.

 

at 1080p I have never seen it go over 3GB, even when running skyrim with probably around 80+ graphical mods (Shitloads of HD textures and shit like that, including ENB) maxed out.

Whether or not it's significant in it's effects shouldn't matter it's the fact u actually have to turn down settings because of it, thats why i and i think so many other people are pissed about it.

 

Didn't watch dogs go up to like 4gbs? Whether or not that is due to the game being poorly mad or not is another story, nonetheless there are still some rare cases where it goes over 4gbs and while yes, it probably doesn't effect many people i expect more from such a well established company. You did remind me that at 4k your AA only really needs to be around 2x so maybe that will help if it does in fact have the same "feature" as the 970.

Also not that it means much but the latest Nvidia drivers 353.06 Nvidia clearly states "Implements optimizations and bug fixes that provide increased performance for Kepler-based GPUs." which suggests that they haven't been giving kepler any love with newer driver releases until recently.

 

It's all speculation at this point obviously, but I'd be pretty upset if I spent a shit ton of money on a 780Ti or Titan and now my card is 50% slower than AMD's 290x in a brand new game.  (45 FPS on 290x in Witcher 3 with NO GAMEWORKS, 30 FPS on a Titan)

It is cheaper because it's not a full GM chip. It is int intentionally cut down. It has half as much VRAM which itself isn't cheap. It's not a Titan so it doesn't get the brand name surcharge.

I would still get it, but I already have a 980 so I would just get another 980 if need be to make me feel better, and with the price drop to boot.
