Upgrading from fx 9590 to i7

currently i am using amd fx 9590 with gtx 980 on asus rog swift 1440p monitor but i get fps drop drastically and games like unity crysis 3 far cry 4 sometimes is unplayable i get lag a lot so i decided to get i7 processsor but which will be the best should i go for 4790k which has 16 pcie lanes and 32gb ram support or 4930k which has 40 pcie lanes and 64gb ram support my main priority is gaming with sli gtx 980 so which would be the best for gaming?

Gaming.. the i5 4690 is ample for your needs.

If Overclocking, 4690K

Streaming? 4790/K

Only when using 3 cards or more would you wanna be using the newer platform.

With 2 cards your just fine and dandy with ample bandwidth for SLI 980's.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

i7-4790K is plenty and will run those games to perfection.

no it won,t...especialy at 1440p which is pretty hard on the GPU.

Formula.

Also, if you want 40 lanes, and something that will last longer, look into the 5930k.

Lets all ripperoni in pepperoni

both are overkill..go with something cheaper that has the features you need.

if you like ASUS look at the Z97-AR or Z97-E both support SLI and are much cheaper...alternatively you can look at the MSI Z97-G45 gaming and MSI Z97 Gaming 5 which also support SLI.

All these boards have good build quality and awesome UEFI with plenty of features...good onboard sound...nothing on these expensive ROG boards to justify the cost to be honest...but it's up to you.

yes it is...you don't need anything more than that...X99 stuff is overpriced and not meant for gaming rig this is for content creation, workstation and power users...not gamers.

liquid cooling corsair, swiftech or cooler master which will be the best in cooling?

what models are you looking at?

swiftech has an awesome AIO i can't remember the name though...220X something like that?

EDIT: that one is a SUPERB cooler if you can afford it...

http://www.ncix.com/detail/swiftech-h220-x-all-in-one-liquid-cooling-6b-93547.htm

i personaly use this one it's pretty nice but many have recived a cracked reservoir because the packaging is not adequate...mine arrived fine and is an awesome performer...you can add the dye the color you want and add GPU's to the loop it's an expandable cooler:

http://www.ncix.com/detail/raijintek-triton-all-in-one-cpu-liquid-94-100817-1360.htm

the fans i heard are loud (havnt tested first hand they are still in the box but i assume you'd want to use better fans on it...unless you don't mind noisy fans.)

probably never until AMD release some competitions...intel does not need to release any new products right now they dominate every segment from the entry level budget CPU's up to the super extreme workstation chips....you are not gonna see any new intel CPU's any time soon IMHO.

It must have cost intel a FORTUNE to get their technology where it's at right now and i think they will just sit there and keep cashing in on haswell and hawell-E for a while.

Wait, you're telling me the FX9 is causing frame drops and lag?  I don't believe you.  Its an 8 core processor at almost 5Ghz!!!  You're full of it.  Such an Intel fanboy.  God, this forum is full of people who can read a bar graph as well as use logic and reasoning. *grumble grumble grumble*

far cry 4 is terrible regardless the cpu its a ubisoft game and they are all crappy console ports and your cpu should be able to play crysis 3 very well i mean my 8350 did just fine in that game.

you could sell your cpu and get a 4790k and be better off however

? i think something is wrong with your intel setup man cause farcry 4 is smooth as butter on my machine on maximum settings i get framerates above 70FPS at all time and if i downgrade to 720P i get well over 110FPS and my GPU is STILL MAXED OUT...

No Ubisoft's title can bring that CPU to it's knees like you seem to tell

EDIT: BTW my 4770K is only at 4.2GHZ..

how many graphics card will support 4790k sli or tri sli

CPU has 16 pcie lanes so it will support 2 cards in SLI at 8x/8x

Some motherboards have a PLX chips that allows for 3 and 4 way SLI though...but they are usualy expensive high end boards...here's the list of those motherboards that will support the 4790K along with 3 or 4 nvidia or AMD GPU's:

http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/motherboard/#l=3,4&c=99&sort=a8

but for real you want to stick to TWO gpu's because scalling of the third and 4th card is pretty bad in most games and will not even justify for the cost of the extra graphics card that will be stitting there doing nothing or not much to help performance in many situations...let alone a more expensive motherboard and more expensive super high-end PSU to allow to run 3 high-end graphics cards.

You also introduce quite a bit of issues (micro-stuttering, excessive screen tearing...) by adding a third card.
