The HP Hexa-Core processor

During the last week, a bunch of new laptops from HP have appeared at various Future Shop and BestBuy stores, and they all have a mysterious "HP Hexa-core" branding. They're sold at a rather high price, with ads praising the power and efficacity of the famous hexa-core.

No Intel, AMD, or anything else, just HP Hexa-core.

With a bit of research, I have managed to discover that this chip (as HP does not manufacture processors) is in fact an AMD A8-6410 Beema processor with 6 Compute Cores (which means 4 actual CPU cores (2 CPU modules) and 2 "GPU cores").

What do you think of this marketing scheme? Is it okay for manufacturers to outright lie to consumers even more than they usually do? And why don't they have to brand it as AMD-powered (as that's possibly a first in computer retailing) ?

Interesting, no idea why they would market it like that though. I would run away from a "HP" chip :P

It's not necessarily "outright lying", AMD also markets their A10-7850K as "12-Compute Cores", meaning 4 CPU cores + 8 GCN GPU cores.

Yeah but they don't sell it as a 12-core processor in ads and at retailers (or if they do, they at least explain that it's 4 CPU + 8 GPU).

Here it is on NCIX for example:

I understand, although I do agree on you that the "Hexa-Core" marketing is very misleading, it's not necessarily lying.

This should be much clearer to the consumer. Most here will find out what it actually most will simply see 6 cores and presume processor cores. When an actual 4 core cpu may be much better.

Morally wrong advertising.

On the ATIV Book 9 lite...

Samsung.

Can't find anything about it not actually being a quad core cpu. However apple did this with the ipad 3. They kept calling it quad core when in reality it was dual core with 4 cores on the gpu

No they kept saying "Powerful quad-core CPU for intensive Gaming and Extra GPU for powerful graphics"

It was an AMD 1.2GHz Quad Core APU. Like, Celeron grade.

I take offence at the "HP" marketing for the CPU. It leads to that "this brand is faster" mentality from uninformed consumers. The same kind of brand loyalty/ignorance that makes people think alienwares are faster because they are alienwares for example. Imagine if it was an "Alienware eight core". Same could be said for mac hardware I guess in a way.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Holy shit I hope this takes off. AMD has done this before, where they brand the GPU cores as part of the processor core count, as if they affect CPU performance. It's not quite misbranding as it is just false information, or somewhat accurate/relevant information in a very, very incorrect place. To the uneducated person, a Kaveri might sound more powerful than many dedicated graphics setups and similar/better than a Core i5.

The most annoying part is that AMD priced these competitively with Haswell i5 flagship (4670k) originally, so you can assume they sold "at least a few" to people who had absolutely no idea what they were getting into. AMD talks up the APU and makes this 'revolutionary processor' that actually doesn't perform well on all fronts. It's better than its previous generation but that should be expected - better yet, required.

Just a quick google search proves this:

lkjRah0.png

Still $159.99, post-price cut. Still competing with Intel Core i5 processors. Still misleading, look at that 12-core bullshit.

Oh and I know my post only covers like 10% of what you posted but I was trying to point out that AMD is just dumb when it comes to this shit. Cool tech does not mean you can misrepresent your fucking product to make it sound better than it actually is. I know so many people that bought the APUs thanks to branding/spec lists similar to HP's.

I feel so shitty telling someone that their Kaveri was the biggest waste of money they've ever spent on a computer when it's their first build. Because of this, and some other stuff mixed in, I no longer recommend /r/buildapc. Too many people there have given poor advice for me to ever direct attention there again and I will always talk 'em down because of it. They screwed over a lot of people in the past year.

But anyway, the only difference being HP having done it themselves by tweaking it even further.

It's the same situation. It makes AMD look bad/worse imo, and not HP. But that's probably because I've observed what AMD has been doing.
