Did Nvidia get screwed over? Or did Nvidia screw us over?

Poor nvidia. If they got screwed over that means they've had to lower the price of their advertised ray tracing cards. I see no evidence thats occurred. 

 

A new 2080 ti which for practical purposes is useless for ray tracing still costs 1200 to 1500 dollars. My car is barely worth that much.

So if I am looking at upgrading from a Nvidia 980 and getting a monitor 3440x1440 120khz what graphics card would you recommend since you don't like the 2000 series?  All of the 1080TIs are about the same cost as a 2080TI or used, which I don't want to deal with someone else's trash they are trying to pawn off.   Not to mention I can get a 2080 for about the same price as the used 1080TIs I see.

False. NVidia has explicitly stated the Titan isn't a consumer card,and removed the Geforce Branding because of it.

Comparing the 2070 to the 1080, the 2080 to the 1080ti and the 2080ti to the Titan Xp:

The RTX 2080 Ti is at $1199, the 2080 at $799 and the 2070 at $599.

 

The 2080 and 1080 Ti are comparable in performance, as are the 2070 and 1080. The 2080Ti beats the Titan Xp. 

 

So, in conclusion. It seems that at comparable price points, you gain the generational improvement for the 2080Ti. For the 2080 as well, but it costs about $100 more than the 1080 Ti. For the 2070, you're paying about $50 for the same performance. Feel free to compare the 2080 Ti to the Titan V instead; that would net you the same performance, but the Ti is at a far better price.

IMHO, these are hardly excessive premiums to pay for the extra features.

Yeah i'd recommend getting a new card since prices are about the same, i'm kinda mixed about used GPU's too like you never know if was used for mining. If you have the budget for a 2080Ti you wouldn't be disappointed using it with a 1440p ultrawide display.

There’s videos on YouTube explaining it. They were mostly using software based denoising as tensor wasn’t a thing back then. They got bought by Apple then sold recently so I am not sure where it’s gone

Raytracing only really interacts with procedural mapping(mathematical description of the surface of an object). The easiest and hardest part to do are reflections. It is easy because it is a copy & paste thing you do in program like 3D max. The hard part is that the type of ray tracing Nvidia uses is unpredictable & will alway need traditional methods to make it work.

Nvidia uses multi bounce recursive ray tracing. This works well most of the time but falls apart when two reflective transparent objects overlap.  For example looking through a car windshield at at the passenger door window. I asked this in i think another thread and since you seem to know somthing about how this works i hope you don't mind if i post a few questions at you.

 

1. How difficult is it to add raytracing to a game. The descriptions i've heard indicate that in theory it should be as simple as setting a flag and letting the hardware do it's work, provided the rest of your game engine can run in DX12 mode.

 

2. What do you think the more medium to long term implications are, are we going to see standard implementation of the three features it covers die out with TX hardware ultimately taking over for them. Certainly if it's as easy to implement as some of what i've heard has lead me to believe that would be a massive dev time saver.

 

3. How much does compute cost vary ray to ray? It sounds like it shouldn't be too bad but my napkin math says 1080p @ 60FPS should only take 700 million odd rays, (assuming no shadow or light rays and 3 rays per pixel), which is over an order of magnitude below the 10 gigarays quoted for the 2080Ti, hell the 2070 is almost an order of magnitude higher.

It is going to be interesting.

It is a little more than adding ray tracing to a DX12 game. Objects need to be converted to interact with it. 

I think in the future there will be raytrace mods for DX12 games just like you can add ENB or Reshade to DX 9, 10 & 11 games. The only difference is that you would have to install raytraced ready objects as well. Since it is baked into DX12 there will be talented people that will be able to bring it out.

It is not a time saver. Objects need to be converted to interact with it.  Also objects that are designed for ray tracing are heavier(more polygons and double sided polygons) than traditional game objects. There is no point in adding these objects to games that are designed for consoles. It is not cost effective for developers to add it to PC conversions unless Nvidia pays for it. This will only change when raytracing gets more mainstream.

You get quick at ray tracing by experience under pressure and that is a good description of game development. I don't think it will take long for game designers to get the frames up if they are given the chance.

1&2. Ouch, the more Polygons is a wash going forward IMO as that has been happening generally anyway as games have improves. But definitely not as easy as would be ideal.

 

3. I'm more trying to figure out why the framerate is so low, is it the Tensor cores not being able to keep up because NVIDIA's 10 gigarays a second is a case of a cherry picked idealised case that the real world will never come near, or are the Tenso cores being limited by something else, or by bad programing?

IMO, I'll stick with actual machine learning use with the Tensor cores ... and keep Ray Tracing and DLSS disabled in games for now, so I can maintain above 60 FPS at 1080p.

You asked what it can do, not what games are promising to support now.
