For any card right now I'm going to have to recommend the R9 290, I have one and with V-Sync enabled it handles everything I throw at it perfectly.

Console optimisations and how they will effect you | The difference between AMD cores and Intel cores | Memory Bus size and how it effects your VRAM usage |
How much vram do you actually need? | APUs and the future of processing | Projects: SO - here

Intel i7 5820l @ with Corsair H110 | 32GB DDR4 RAM @ 1600Mhz | XFX Radeon R9 290 @ 1.2Ghz | Corsair 600Q | Corsair TX650 | Probably too much corsair but meh should have had a Corsair SSD and RAM | 1.3TB HDD Space | Sennheiser HD598 | Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro | Blue Snowball

Tbh I'm fine with my R9 290 getting hot, why?

It simply means that the heat isn't dissipated into the surrounding atmosphere and is kept on the chip instead.

With V-Sync enabled the temps don't get very high because the card is so powerful it can max out most games without breaking a sweat and if the card is rated the be fine at 95 degrees it's fine by me. Sure high temperatures are known to shorten the lifespan of chips but based on the fact that we're about to have die shrinks and extreme performance increases in GPUs and with the fact that 4k is likely to become mainstream relatively soon with the prices dropping faster than women's panties in the presence on Leonardo Di Caprio we're going to NEED more GPU power and although 2 R9 290s could push that many pixels it'll probably be irrational to NOT upgrade when you look at the performance increase at lower price points that we got when 1080p become the standard. You can get relatively good 1080p performance for stupid low prices now compared to before 1080p was standard and multiple high end graphics cards were needed to run it.

The 290 is designed to run hot.

The 290 is OK, but the 780 is way better. Lower temerture not overclocked, and better performance over clocked.

Way better? Hyperbole much? It depends on users, some don't mind the heat as long as the card functions normally. Also, it really depends on where you're from, a GTX780 cost substantially more than an R9 290.....my neck of the woods, cheapest GTX780 is a little over 700 local currency, while the cheapest R9 290 goes for less than 600 local dollars. I don't know about you, but that's a substantial dollar difference.

Please note that the 290 series can run hot without issue, though it'd be best to run at lower temps of course. I have a pair of R9 290X in CFX and have not had any heat related issue....in fact, no issue whatsoever.

Get an EVGA GTX780 SuperClocked w/ ACX Cooler for right around $500. It's the best card you can get for the money right now until the cryptocoin craze ends.

That's one thing i found odd, around my neck of the woods finding an r9 card is hard enough and then paying for an r9 card is another matter 780 and the r9 290 have the exact same price.

I find it difficult to recommend a 290 at that price point, and thats just for a reference ones. I agree the cryptocoin craze is ridiculous.

Maybe you should also think about recording/streaming with ShadowPlay, Nvidia's game optimization if that's a nice thing for you and maybe even g-sync which will be nvidia exclusive. And cooler wise for a 780 I can recommend the gigabyte one! My buddy got better temps with it than with ACX.

If you want to play Battlefield I would think about an AMD card, considering mantle coming out and the already better performance in that game.

3570K @4.1GHz on a Gigabyte Z77X-D3H with 8GB of Corsair XMS3 overclocked to 2000MHz CL11 with a GTX 770 all inside a Corsair 600t case.

I would get a non reference cooler R9 290. Asus and Sapphire both make great aftermarket coolers.

Why is the r9 better in battlefield ??

:)

It will be up to 45% better than its original performance in Battlefield 4 when Mantle releases as it will give it more performance. :)

And the performance between GTX 780 and the R9 290 were pretty close when watercooled and overclocked:

Even though they didn't test BF4, I think it would have better performance with the help of Mantle.

Wait for some actual performance numbers.

I thought the 45% boost was shown on an APU. If so, a dedicated card, especially an enthusiast card like the 290, will see nearly the difference. My guess is more like 10-15%. But hey, that's still something.
