Lionheads failure wasn't Microsoft's fault, it was the OG liar Peter Molyneux who destroyed them.

Rare were also waaay past it long before Microsoft got hold of them. Go back and look at the horse shit rare were pumping out on the PS2 & Xbox and you'll see what I mean. Nintendo let Rare go because they knew the transition from Gen 5 to Gen 6 was too much for them and it turns out they were right.

Nah disagree. Microsoft was the ones that fucked over multiple fable games in development or planned

Before Bard's Tale IV released, Brian Fargo said that if Bard's Tale IV performs well he'd like to buy back Interplay and regain its IPs.

Brian Fargo Wants to Buy Back Interplay if ‘The Bard’s Tale IV’ Is a Hit

Quote

Variety reached out to Fargo to confirm whether or not he’s serious about the potential purchase. “I certainly am,” he said via email. “My fans have been requesting me to bring back my old Interplay games for years and this would be the most amazing way to make that happen.”

Fargo co-founded Interplay in the 1980s. The developer/publisher helped introduce the world to classic role-playing games like the original “Fallout,” “Baldur’s Gate,” and “Planescape: Torment.” It went bankrupt in the early 2000s. Then, in 2016, it announced it was selling its video game library and intellectual property, which included about 70 titles and dozens of characters.

If Fargo does buy back Interplay, it will come with “tons” of IPs like “Dragon Wars, “Earthworm Jim,” “Sacrifice,” and “Kingpin,” he said.

That would have been beautiful, and close to a daydream come true. Though, Bard's Tale IV has received rough reviews, and I doubt that it sold well, given the small number of player reviews for it on Steam. I guess that Fargo really doesn't want to stop making games, since instead of retire, which was his earlier stated plan, he opted to sell his studio to Microsoft and cancel his plan to retire.

I wonder if InXile's acquisition by Microsoft has given Fargo the money needed to make a good offer to buy back Interplay. I also wonder if Fargo now being an employee of Microsoft would in some way prevent him from being allowed to buy Interplay and then own a separate game studio to the one he works at for Microsoft.

Remember back when AOL was buying up Bulletin Boards like crazy, then abandoning them? Seems like MS has become the new AOL.

I remember using AOL's instant messaging once.

I hope this gives Obsidian the resources to perhaps make a proper Neverwinter Nights 3.

But this is more likely going to run those studios into the ground.

I don't see why everyone is being so pessimistic about this. Microsoft and Xbox are very different then they were 10-15 years ago. They have new leadership, pro-consumer policies as of late, actual support for windows (hit and miss, but no denying it's there), and are giving these new developers autonomy to get some creative work out the door. They know they are getting their asses handed to them in the so called "console wars" this generation. Buying talented developers and giving them a proper budget and a decent level of autonomy is a good way to make a strong showing for the next generation. All of their games have been releasing on windows 10 and game pass, and Sony is probably never going to do that. I think they have earned at least a little credit at this point.
