8 core 4.7 Gh processor for $100 !?

i've been looking at value processors and i saw the AMD FX 9590, a 8 core 4.7Gh processor for 99$
so.....whats the catch? i mean it does draw twice the power of some server CPU's even drawing more than most Threadripper processors with the exclusion of the 2990 WX. 
is this worth it?

Its a older bad archeture thats worse in games than a 2200g or a g4560. Its a okay value for some tasks, very power hungry, and has old io(not native usb 3, pcie 2, still uses a north bridge)

No. Even a Ryzen 3 2200G performs better and is overall much better value.

The 9590 is a heavily overclocked 8350 out of box, not at all worth the price tag. The 8350 is like a third the price, and guess what, you can just overclock it. Plus, it's "8 cores" but they have to share some FPU resources so they actually aren't as good as a regular 8 core

i was going to say that it wouldn't be worth it because of the heat and because like @Electronics Wizardy said, outdated IO and old architecture. What about using it for video editing/3D modeling/CAD?

Absolutely horrible CPU. It's been known to literally melt motherboards, it requires a powerful AIO to contain it's thermals, and as others have said, an Intel Pentium can net the same results in gaming. It's just an extremely poor choice.

All those tasks make heavy use of floating-point maths, exactly the one thing where the FX CPUs are the worst at.

Could you get a r5 1600 instead? Maybe on the used market or something?

that cpu is more power hungry, power to performance ratio is not great.

better you buy an old i7 2700, with 8 threads for the same price.

it's not worth it unless you already have an AM3 and have no plans to upgrade to Ryzen.

You can game on an FX 8350 in triple AA titles just fine.  But you can do the same, for the same cost or less, spending a lot less electricity with an i5 3470 or better (get a refurbed unit...whole PC for like..120-140).  Or get the Ryzen 2200g.  Or save up and don't regret buying 2012 tech. 

 

Ive had mine for a long while.  Its a GREAT CPU for its longevity (if you have had it since release).  It hasn't let me down for what it is, and what I use it for.  However I cannot recommend it, when there are such better options.

 

Don't let the cores and gigerhertz impress you.  Cause I have an OEM i5 3470, when I put in the same GPU from my FX machine...I get the same results...my i5 machine cost me $140.  The FX machine you would have to build would cost you MUCH more.

Well i got the feeling that you wanted to buy a new processor for your rendering and stuff, and for that FX 9590 is pretty bad.

 I would just wait a few more months to get a ryzen pc.

Considering that the initial "OEM" release was $920, $99 is a bargain.

 

Buy that, a solid board, 4 GTX 480s and you'll have yourself a space heater.

BTW if you are really considering old tech, and cores and threads than THIS is your only option in my humble opinion (and what I will replace my FX with if it were to die today because it will achieve what I am doing and better for such a LOW cost:

@Tristerin or even better get a dual socket board that supports X5600-series xeon's. i've got X5650's and my system still feels quite fast. it's not the best for gaming but i don't have a high end gpu anyway.

Above you I linked an X5690 workstation for $220 shipped Im with you, before this forum I wasn't into Xeons.  Im kind of sad I cant buy one and play with it (my wife would kill me..parts pile to big) because they just seem...so capable.

they are very capable. if i'm playing Overwatch with my dual X5650's cpu usage is about 15%

Nice!  My FX on max power management is 35-60% usage.  My Ryzen 7 is about 15% usage to give you a baseline (across 16 threads) - I haven't monitored it heavily in Overwatch yet but that sounds about right.  And the generations between...shows just how capable those Xeons are.
