Are old cpu’s a option for gaming

Hey guys I was looking for a cheap game pc and started to look at older cpu’s The i5 2500k to be precise is it a option to use this cpu for modern gaming? I want it to work with a gigabite rx550 2gb oc edition graphics card and about 8g ram. Already thanks for your support??

Yeah honestly if you can get it cheap enough it's still will work great. But newer CPUs can be found for not a ton of money. Like the AMD Ryzen CPUs on sale are dirt cheap

The Pentium G4560 trades blows with the 2500k and down the line if you want to upgrade when you save up there is the I7 7700K supported on the same motherboards and sockets. The two CPUs G4560 and 2500k are about neck and neck and even at a great deal for the 2500k the G4560 would still be within about $10

Oh I was talking in the US. I am not sure about international prices. In the US they both hover $50-60 USD. I'm not sure the exact euro transaction rate or how much the markets vary.

Yep. I've been using my secondary rig with an i5 2400, 16GB DDR3, and an EVGA 1050 FTW while I wait for my main rig parts to get here. Runs Destiny 2 just fine at 50-60 fps, on medium-low most of the drops are in bigger areas where the quad core has a hard time, but it's still perfectly playable. An OCed 2500K would probably do much better, or an i7 2600K if you can get one cheaper than a Ryzen CPU.

Try find the i7 2600k or 2700k. The hyperthreading would really help in games that require more than 4 cores to get the most out of them.

Sandybridge CPU's are beastly overclockers. 5Ghz is possible with most of them, which is insane considering their stock clocks.

Add on top of that that those CPUs can match 8th gen CPU's (with the same core count) at stock once you OC them to around 4.6ghz ....they are great CPU's if you can find them on the cheap.

 

My 3930k for example (its sandybirdge) at 4.6ghz matches the 8700k stock.

What you mean by "matching" 8700k even at stock ? In term of performance, fps or just match GHz number ?

 

Overclocking to the same Ghz does not mean it will match 8700k , or ven 8600k stock.

In some synthetics, like passmark , sandybridge can come very close to stock 8th gen CPU's of the same core count.

My 3930k for example can match a 8700k overall score, and single thread score of a 8600k.

 

in gaming the difference is even smaller, to the point of it being inperceptable without FPS counters. even with FPS counters the difference isnt huge.

 

Long story short, if you have a OC'ed i7 sandybridge, especialy a 3930k or 3960x, its simply not woth the money to upgrade to an 8th gen, the difference in performance isnt worth it. (2600k,2700k OCed to 4.8ghz-5ghz, 3930k,3960x 4.6ghz-4.8ghz)

 

And if your running a sandybridge i5, find a used i7 for a cheap upgrade.

 

Now for productivity, thats a different story, professional workloads, video edition, etc the newer CPU's are worth it.

The CPU on its own may be priced good, along with used DDR3 prices, a used motherboard for it is overpriced though, more so for NOS (New Old Stock) motherboards that cost around 1.4 to 3x or more the cost of a budget/entry level Z370 board (before shipping, taxes, fees, etc), for Example:

Brand New ASUS P8Z77-V LX off Ebay from Hong Kong is $192 Canadian, while a New Gigabyte Z370P D3 is $134.50 from Vuugo, that price diffrence is that a Brand New Z77 is at least 142.75% more expensive than the cheapest Z370 ATX board (New Z370 mATX board would likely be cheaper for a even bigger price diffrence)

I've been using an i5 2500 with a gtx 1050 ti for a while now and in shadow of war I get to max out my GPU usage and video memory, it gets to 100% while the cpu (non-k) stays around  85% usage with high settings. there is a little bit of margin left so with a 2500k ocd you will be fine. And also with a hyper 212x never gets higher than 60c degrees

In my 2nd rig I had an AMD FX 8320 that struggled in Battlefield 1 so badly it bottlenecked my Radeon 7870.

 

Ordered a Xeon X3440 for like $15 and a matching motherboard and it handles Battlefield just fine (did even better with the BF5 Beta). I do have it overclocked up to 3.6ghz, but that was easy to do. I now have my R9 290x in that rig and the Xeon keeps up. It scores around 430 in Cinebench (if I recall correctly) which is a far cry from what my 8320 scored while overclocked (upwards of 650), but for gaming the Xeon is great.
