what's with my iPhone 7's battery drain at night?

Ashleyyyy

so when i go to sleep i usually put my iPhone 7 on my nightstand playing back music at low volume through the phone's speakers. i use spotify to play the music.

now here's the issue. the battery drains super quick while it's doing that. i've slept for about 3 hours last night (i know it's bad) and when i went to sleep it had about 40%. when i woke up it had 6%. what's with that?

Open the battery app inside Settings & check what was using the battery in the last 24hours.   Funny enough, on my Moto G5S+ the Bluetooth is the biggest battery drain on a typical day for me - Even when I don't have my headset connected!

The wifi radio is also a culprit, though it should be minimal while streaming music. Not like streaming mp3's needs much data...
I don't use spotify, so does it do any kind of notifications between songs that might be waking up the device & turning on the screen?

spotify used 75% of the battery the last 24 hours. even though on a normal day i only use it for a few hours, and i use it while i sleep.

Ouch!  Even a couple hours of YT on my Moto won't do that. I'd try uninstall it & clear any trace of it, them maybe try again. If you can, maybe check it's permissions & try to limit what the app can do.    Otherwise think you might have to keep it plugged in while listening.

7 is a new enough model I doubt your battery is the issue, so it must be something within the app going wonky.

ok i'll do that once it's done updating. it's currently updating to iOS 12 so maybe that will help too.

did it also improve battery life? i've been really happy with the performance on iOS 11 anyway. the only bad thing about the phone is the battery life for me...

Sounds about right, the device can't enter any sleep states if you're playing music.

Yes I would think so. I'll do a test with my iPhone X tonight and let you know what my results are.

Can you tell me, are you streaming the music? And are you connected to WiFi or on 4G/3G?

yes it also improved battery life for me, sorry for the late reply :) you're probably already on iOS 12

it's not so much as it improved the longevity, but it was ALOT more consistent

i'm connected to wifi. the music is stored locally (just the download feature in spotify) and i don't have any other apps open. i also have my alarm set but that shouldn't matter.

when it's playing the volume is at around 5 dots, playing through the speakers of the phone.

Doesn't seem anyone in the comments thought about so I think I might be able to help.

I also have an iPhone 7. I have the same problem, charge my phone to 100%, go to sleep, then when I woke up, its about 20~30%.

Tried to search for fix, but nothing.

Turns out my phone is listening for siri command. Try to turn off your "Listen for Hey Siri" in your Settings -> Siri & Search -> Listento "Hey Siri"...

That fixed it for me...

Be sure to update to iOS 12, check the battery usage tab, if Spotify is the one taking up all that usage then there is a bug with the app that the devs need to know about.

Could also be as simple as reinstalling the app. Especially if its been installed on the phone for a long period of time.

i have updated to iOS 12. immediately a heart attack moment. i restarted my phone this morning and my touchscreen didn't work. after 5 mins of restarting it started working...

but anyway, i'll try to reinstall the app. kinda annoying that i'll have to redownload about 4500 songs using the app afterwards but oh well.

Jesus man, you have 4500 songs and you're relying on an app to store them? That's a fine example of why you should be using a PC to manage your phone. I keep my entire music collection (about the same size as yours) stored as files on several different HDDs, on site and off site.

spotify is a streaming service. the songs are only downloaded so that if i want to listen to music if i'm offline i can. this is a feature in the spotify app.

if my phone dies and all music on it is gone i can just get a new phone, log in to spotify and redownload them all.

it's a similar feature to netflix where on mobile devices you can download (some, not all) films and series to your device.
