Buying a new CPU. i7 9700k vs i9 9900k vs i7 8086k

Hello all,

At this moment I am running an old Haswell-refresh system, and I would like to upgrade my CPU/MOBO/RAM.

I am currently running:

i7 4790k

12GB DDR3

GTX1080 ti

While this is still good for gaming on 1440p, I also heavily mod videogames for my Youtube channel like GTA V, Kingdom Come Deliverance, and Skyrim:SE.  I start noticing that these heavily modded games are having problems running 60fps/1440p all the time, so apart from upgrading my GTX1080 ti, I also would like to upgrade my CPU. (and for that Mobo/RAM)

I also edit my videos for my Youtube channel on this PC, so id rather have a i7/i9 vs a i5   :)

The question is, what would be the best choice right now? I7 9700k, i9 9900k, or the i7 8086k?

The 8086k is ‘’the best CPU for gaming’’ right now if I have to believe the reviews. Higher base clockspeed then the i7 9700k as well? Or am I mistaken here?    But then the i9 9900k has 8 cores 16 threads.  So I find it hard to make a decision.

Budget is not important, but id rather not spend money on a CPU which is not ideal in my situation.

I was wondering what you guys would pick?

9900k.

Not worth buying an older gen when anew one is about to be released.

The 9700K will be worse than the 8700K.

9900k of course.

8086k is just a dumb purchase. Buy an 8700k, overclock them both and you might get the same speed.

9700k seems to be equal or similar to 8700k, nowhere near as good as 9900k

TBH, get anything but the 8086K. It's just a overclocked 8700K. Definitely the worst possible purchase out of your options.

Alright thanks all :)

To be honest I did not follow the Intel CPU line after I got my i7 4790k, so I had to catch up with everything again of what they did release.

i9 9900k it will be!

Keep in mind the 9900K has been delayed until early 2019 though, so you'll have to be patient.

  • 4 weeks later...

I like my 8086k which I paid for $360 on ebay brand new.  It overclocks to 5.0GHz easily with air cooling without any issues.

If I was patient, then of course the new 9900k.

I had to get back up to speed as i have not upgraded cpu in over 6 years.
I would get i9 9900k, Although, at that price don't cheap on a mobo. Still no hyper threading on the i7 makes me very hesitant to upgrade from my Ivy Bridge 3770k.

just get the ryzen 5 2600x for much cheaper and the 8700k is only 17% faster or you could get a 3600 when it comes out

i9-9900k definatley is piece of shit in terms of price/performance ratio do not buy it!

Best you can buy right now is used i7-8700k or new Ryzen 7 2700x. Both will be exelent CPUs for 1440p gaming.

i7-8700k is almost identical to i9-9900k in terms of gaming performance.

Hi

I mod Skyrim/SE & Fallout 4.

I am currently using an i7 8086K  & an i7 8700k.

The only reason I bought the i7 8086k an was for my modded games. The difference in performance between the 2 chips is minimal in unmodded modern games. In modded games the i7 8086k gives me more head room for staying smooth when adding content. It also limits the severity of CPU drops in the games.

Skyrim SE like Skyrim has CPU drops in some areas that are amplified when heavily modding the game. I have played the games with 4 different CPUs

i7 2600k = drops into the 30s

i7 6700k = drops into the 40s

i7 8700k = drops into the 50s

i7 8086k with 5ghz overclock = drops into the 60s

You can see why I like the i7 8086k using a 60hz 4k monitor.

I wish my i7 8700k could perform like the i7 8086k with a 5ghz overclock but it can't. For stability in my modded games I can't go past 1.344v & that only gets me 4.7ghz on my sample.

Right now I am mainly modding Fallout 4. What I do is add NPCs. I like to have swarms of flying bugs, 20+ raider & gunner attacks  & hordes of feral ghouls. At this time the game is not playable with a i7 6700k & not smooth with my i7 8700k. Only my i7 8086k can do the job for now.

Like most modders I want more content & my current hardware is slowly failing to do the job. I will be getting a RTX 2080 ti even though I only need it for my modded Fallout 4. I will get a i9 9900k depending how well it does on these 2 charts.

If it wasn't for my modded games I would have stuck with my i7 6700k. It ran all my other games flawlessly.
