Should I replace my 2x 980TIs with a 1080TI?

snowandsand

Basically, looking to possibly replace my two 980ti strix cards with EK acetal water blocks with a 1080ti, already have one of my cards sold locally here.  Just wondering if it is really worth it, and if it is what card do you recommend?  I was looking at the EVGA SC2 Black that was onsale for $749 with a free 750w power supply on Amazon(can just sell the PS to recoup some of the cost) Also I normally game on a Acer Z35p(3440x1440).

I would say it is worth it. Just for the simple fact that most games are no longer supporting SLI, and when they do, it isn't always the best. A 1080 ti will crush it at that resolution.

Main Rig: cpu: Intel 6600k OC @ 4.5Ghz; gpu: Gigabyte Gaming OC RTX 2080 (OC'd); mb: Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD3; ram: 16 GB (2x8GB) 3000 G.Skill Ripjaws V; psu: EVGA 650BQ; storage: 500GB Samsung 850 evo, 2TB WD Black; case: Cooler Master HAF 912; cooling: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo, Lots of fans, Air!; display: 4k Samsung 42" TV, Asus MX259H 1080p audio: Schiit Audio Magni Amp w/ Audio Technica M50x

I mean two 980ti's are generally as strong as a single 1080ti, but since SLI isnt nearly as well supported, a single card configuration is almost always better than two weaker cards in SLI.

Personally I would recommend any of the coolers that use tripple slot fans, since Pascal Architecture will boost itself based on temperature headroom. The FTW3, Asus Strix, MSi Duke, Gigabyte Aorus, Zotac Lightning. Thast not to say the SC2 cards or any 2 fan design are bad, but these GPU's do run hot!

MSi Duke

I have the 1080 variant of this card and couldn't be happier with my temps. Under 70C at full load with a mild OC and fans don't go over ~70%.

Sorry let me also clarify that this card will also go into my loop.  I was looking at the SC2 card because I believe it is the reference PCB and will have more WB options.  I agree on the deal with SLI, that is why I plan on sticking with single cards for the foreseeable future.

As for the rest of my rig it a 6700k running at 4.6GHz, and the ram was some adata@2666 that came with the rig when DS Built it years ago.  Since then I have read done the tubing in the loop and added a drain port.

I hate how hot my 980ti gets during games. No oc 84C at 70% fan speed. Although, I'm thinking the thermal paste might be dying out

Sell them, and but one 1080ti. SLI is not worth it these days.

Too many people around here are quick to bash SLI without probing first. SLI still has plenty of merit in the high end space.

Do a good number of games you play support SLI (either officially or unofficially)? If yes, then keep the cards. If not, and you can't wait for Volta to drop, then sell them and get a 1080Ti.

The highest I have seen these cards hit is 50-55c after gaming for hours with 2x 360mm rads in my loop

Well, hell that loop will do it... I'm still on the beefy ass stock cooler. Don't have the money to buy/build a loop. Maybe once I get outta college $$$

I would wait for the new GTX 11 series that are probably coming in a couple of months and then decide. I would probably just go for a GTX 1180 when it comes out because it will have about the same performance as a GTX 1080ti at a slightly lower price I think.

But buying a GTX 1080ti right now isn't a bad choice either but I would personally wait.
